Another successful outcome for Niho Ora Ki Hauraki! Well done team!

Niho Ora ki Hauraki in Paeroa complete 🦷✅️

Over the last two weeks, our team saw over 60 patients in Paeroa receive dental treatment through our initiative.

A big mihi to our partner who have been with Te Tara o Te Whai since we started Niho Ora ki Hauraki this year and a big mihi to Paeroa Central kura. Without your manaaki, we wouldn't be able to deliver this important kaupapa.

And lastly, to the whānau who came through our initiative, thank you for your aroha.

It’s not everyday that you get the opportunity to be a part of such a cool community event! It’s not just the amazing coffee but to be able to connect with our awesome neighbours and police who keep us safe is priceless. Look forward to the next activity!

Understanding the way that oral health impacts one's hauora highlights the pressing need for there to be more affordable oral health-care opportunities for whānau in Hauraki.

Niho Ora ki Hauraki is one small part of all of the mahi our team and partners carry out. Working to achieve the shared vision of "Mō tātou o Hauraki- Hauraki a healthy nation!"

We're back with another Whānau Friday!

Following the rollout of our dental initiative, Niho Ora ki Hauraki, in Manaia, we asked whānau who received treatment to share their experiences using our service.

This was one of the responses we received 🫶

“Niho Ora ki Hauraki has exceeded my expectations. Beyond the dental work, the entire journey has significantly enhanced my Hinengaro (mental and emotional well-being) and Wairua (spiritual). Dental care is a desperate need in our rural communities, and this initiative has been a blessing for all of us in Manaia and has provided a huge financial relief. A heartfelt thank you to all who made this service a reality for those who live rurally and are too far away to access these services.

It has been a pleasure delivering this kaupapa in collaboration with Dental Planet this year, and our team looks forward to bringing Niho Ora ki Hauraki to Paeroa during the next school holidays.

May is our community month with four consecutive Sundays dedicated to promoting oral health by bringing the service to people. We kick off at the Takanini Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib. The team spent the day engaged, excited and motivated by the warm reception of would be patients. Can’t wait till next Sunday. Watch this space! Just one of the things we do to foster long term partnership with the schools that we serve. Having and awesome time encouraging young minds at James Cook High School to explore career opportunities in Oral Health.

Halloween is just around the corner and so will those irresistible treats be! Let the kids enjoy the event but make sure you’re on top of the things they’re having. Here’s a few tips to remember:

-After indulging in sweet treats, it’s best to wait a bit before brushing. The acidity of some treats can soften the enamel, making them more prone to damage when they’re brushed.
-However, you don’t want to wait too long and let the sugar settle into their teeth. Wait to have your kids brush until about 30 minutes or more after their last treat.
-In the meantime, have your kids hydrate. The water and their saliva will help wash away the sugar until it’s time to brush their teeth.
-Avoid costumes with fake teeth. These can cause a build-up of bacteria in your kids’ mouth and cause bad breath.
-Remember to make sure your tamariki see the Dentist or Oral Health Therapists for their scheduled visit at least once year.
-After trick-or-treating, check your kid’s bag and look through the types of candies. If you can count all the candies, divide them according to the number allowed to be consumed in a day. For example, you may set 10 candies in a day and then segregate candies into packs. In this way, you teach your children how to moderate things. Without control, kids tend to consume candies to their heart’s content, as if there’s no tomorrow.
