Briana Jamieson, Vase, 2024
Oil on canvas
275mm x 325mm

‘A home of four flatmates in their early thirties; kitchen abundant with ceramics and fruit. In this series Jamieson has drawn inspiration from the objects in her Lyall Bay kitchen, and connected moments in time over the past summer and autumn.’

The exhibition Fruit Bowl is on now until July 7th

Kāryn Taylor, Pythagorean Dream, 2024
Cast acrylic, unique
400mm x 400mm x 45mm

‘Taylor’s practice is informed by geometric abstraction, a concept that has long been used to explore complex philosophical notions that transcend the physical realm. Spirituality, light, time and perception can all be experienced but cannot be physically grasped nor easily explained. For Taylor, geometric abstraction is a conduit: allowing the artist to describe unknowable ideas that are beyond the everyday, enabling us to engage in a deeper knowledge of existence.’

Briana Jamieson features in the latest issue of Art Collector Magazine in their ‘Artists to Look Out For’ section.

‘Jamieson’s luminescent paintings feature simplified, gentle forms, a pared back colour palette and a soft, hazy application of oils. Her preferred subject matter ranges from plants and sunsets to swans, landscapes, and table settings.’ - Camilla Wagstaff

‘I create series of paintings from the things that feel warm, calm, beautiful, and inspiring to me. Sometimes it’s from personal experiences of joy, like food shared with friends.’ - Jamieson

The exhibition Fruit Bowl continues at Sanderson until July 7th

Sanderson are pleased to announce the exhibition ‘In the Presence of Absence’ featuring a new body of work by award winning photographer Kate van der Drift will open July 10th.

Known for her large-scale ‘river exposures’ Van der Drift has extended her camera-less photographic explorations in this evocative new series, gently collaborating with nature and utilising site-specific materials.

In the Presence of Absence draws from the dense fluidity of Waikato’s peat lakes, sites of both ecological richness and historical significance. Van der Drift’s artworks act as a series of ‘nature writings’ where the artist has created cyanotype exposures toned with the tannin-rich lake water, creating layered works that capture the essence of this unique wetland environment.

Kāryn Taylor, Body of Knowledge, 2024
Cast acrylic
Edition of 3
500mm x 850mm x 45mm

‘Taylor’s analogue light boxes are intense in colour with their radiant lines of light that defy logic – glowing without power. Their illumination is striking; convincing many that there must be some kind of hidden mechanism or light source. Through their illusionism, they provide a visual dialect that encodes a divergent experience of perception. They are a gateway to understanding what we don’t know and how we exist within that.’

Currently on display in the exhibition Visual Linguistics

Kāryn Taylor features in the latest issue of Denizen magazine ahead of her solo exhibition Visual Linguistics opening at Sanderson

‘You are known for your ‘self-illuminating’ lightbox artworks and artworks that explore light and space. When did you first start making art in this way?’

‘My first exploration into light and space was when I made a large-scale immersive work for the Dunedin Fringe Festival called ‘Practical Metaphysics’. It was a series of chambers, each with its own frequency relating to the energy systems of the human body. I used the vibration of light, colour and sound to achieve this. Later I studied for my Masters at Elam where I experimented with sculptural light and line works.’

Sanderson are pleased to announce the solo exhibition Visual Linguistics by Kāryn Taylor will open on June 12th 2024.

Taylor is a multi-disciplinary artist who manipulates materials, light, form and shadow to produce self-illuminating light boxes and multi-dimensional installations that challenge our perception of the structures that ground our reality.

Taylor’s analogue light boxes are intense in colour with their radiant lines of light that defy logic – glowing without power. Through their illusionism, they provide a visual dialect that encodes a divergent experience of perception.

Taylor was a finalist in the Fulbright Wallace Award, Parkin Drawing Prize, the Waikato Contemporary Art Award and the Lola Anne Tunbridge Award. In 2023 she presented a large scale public exhibition Future Philosophies at The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū, Nelson.

Sanderson are pleased to announce the solo exhibition Fruit Bowl by Briana Jamieson will open on June 12th.

Jamieson is a painter, writer and publisher based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. The artist graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with First Class Honours from Massey University in 2015.

When creating a series the artist notes down memories and experiences that act as conceptual inspiration for her works. In Fruit Bowl Jamieson has drawn inspiration from the objects in her Lyall Bay kitchen, and memories from the past summer and autumn.

Molly Timmins, Rerooted Bromeliad (Neoregelia Fireball), 2024
Oil & acrylic on canvas
1500mm x 1000mm

Currently on display in the exhibition ‘Rewilding the Garden’

Timmins’ practice takes influence from her Ngāpuhi and Pākeha whakapapa, presenting a nuanced conversation between the two. Referencing her own heritage alongside considered painting techniques the artist navigates the colonial influence over both the garden and painting history, and the way in which women have historically existed in these spaces within Aotearoa in the last century.

“My grandmother Hazel owned a Bromeliad business, carried on by my mother today. This matrilineal relationship to exotic plants and colonial gardens provides passage and sensitivity to the garden as a domestic space of peace, identity and comfort. This is balanced by a critique of the way these histories have subjugated women within the limits of convention.”

Twist VIII, 2024
Oak
630mm x 400mm x 130mm

Llenyd Price, Attentive Solitude, 2024
Acrylic on canvas
1150 x 1350 mm

Currently on display in the exhibition A Temporary Observer

This collection of works presents the artist’s personal investigation into their place within the natural environment of Aotearoa. Price’s terrains are inspired by lived experiences of locations predominantly from the Waikato and Tāmaki Makaurau.

The artist’s use of colour plays into the idea that memory can be expressed as a multiplicity of fissures, fractured yet bold. With a focus on self-perception, the artist presents representations of the self, silhouetted, not as he existed in time but as a temporary observer of moments as they play out in his mind.

‘Constantly oscillating and refocusing, these scenes offer alternative ways to encounter and experience the world, and ask the viewer to question the way reality exists through our physical interactions with space and the ways in which our memories can manifest. Price asks: “How do we connect to past moments? And memories that change over time?’
