PRECAUTIONARY EVACUATION: Western Road, Ngongotaha.
Rotorua Lakes Council emergency management is asking residents of Western Road to evacuate.
This is a precautionary measure in case the river rises higher- it is easier and safer for people to leave before a potential flood.
This is not a declared state of emergency, but we are closely monitoring the situation to do whatever is needed to keep people safe.
Teams are door-knocking in the area.
IF YOU ARE ASKED TO EVACUATE: take something warm to wear and essentials (medication, baby food etc). Take your pets.
If possib;le, go to friends and whanau.
Otherwise, move away from the river to a dry, safe location.
Follow Rotorua Lakes Council. we will update here with new information as we can.

This does not mean the river WILL flood, but we don't want to be taking any chances with people's safety.

"I enjoy knowing that the work I do makes a difference to the lives of students, families, and communities. It costs me very little to volunteer my time and experience to these initiatives, but the outcomes are massive for the people I work with."

Meet Zac, the President of our brand new SVA Club at The University of Waikato 😁 When our Programmes team reached out to WSU - Waikato Students' Union earlier this year, Zac put his hand up from the WSU Board to lead the formation of the club - and now heads up branches at both the Hamilton and Tauranga campuses!

Zac is studying towards a few qualifications, including a PhD in Mathematics 🎓 He has a history of volunteering in education, tutoring refugee students in high schools.

We're so excited to support SVA Waikato starting out on their journey, thank you for your mahi, Zac! 💙

Just under one week to go! Who else is planning to volunteer as many hours as possible next week? 😃

09/05/2024

IT'S COMPETITION TIME! 🏆

Youth Volunteer Week celebrates young people who are striving to make a change through volunteering, and encourages others to try volunteering 🫶

We’d love for all SVA Service Award students to get out and about in their communities and volunteer 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 as possible during this week, so we’ve set up a friendly competition! 😁

The three schools who volunteer the most hours will receive the 2024 SVA Youth Volunteer Week Award, a visit from us at SVA and their story shared on our social media. The top ten individual volunteers will receive the 2024 SVA Youth Volunteer Week Award, plus a SVA prize pack, and their name and picture in the SVA Newsletter celebrating them ⭐️

So, keep up your regular volunteering, organise a school event or reach out to local community organisations to see how you can help. Whatever volunteering you do from May 20th to May 26th will count towards your chance to win! Good luck!

07/05/2024

Today is World Day of Social Justice, a day to recognise the need to tackle social justice issues such as poverty, exclusion, gender inequality, unemployment, human rights and social protections 🌎

UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 is all about promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. 🐦

So, how will you contribute to Goal 16 this World Day of Social Justice? Share your opinion with your elected representatives? Promote inclusion and respect towards people of different ethnic origins, religions, gender or sexual orientations? Offer support to organisations actively working towards the goal through anti-violence or human rights work, either with volunteering or fundraising? 💙

Give the gift of strength this Christmas 22/11/2023

"When the Anniversary Weekend floods happened, West Auckland was one of the worst hit areas. Seeing my childhood streets and the local schools underwater was devastating. I wanted to help but I had no resources, no training, and didn’t know where to start. I found SVA through social media and signed up to the first available volunteer opportunity. I no longer felt helpless."

We couldn't do it without you. Read SVA volunteer Caitlin's story and give the gift of strength this Christmas 💙

Give the gift of strength this Christmas During the Auckland floods recovery, we were only able to send volunteers out safely with donated PPE, and only able to keep operations running because of donations. During those long days when we had a donation come in we would all celebrate - glimpses of joy throughout many harrowing days.
