At OutLine Aotearoa, we’re committed to celebrating q***r excellence and uplifting Rainbow, Takatāpui and MVPFAFF+ voices.

That’s why we thrilled to announce that Jenn Tamati has been appointed as our new Operations Manager – a role that will be vital as we undertake changes to the way we uphold our values and deliver support services to our communities.

Jenn joined OutLine in 2021 as our first fulltime Volunteer Coordinator. In that role, Jenn was pivotal in bringing volunteer training in-house, as well as strengthening our processes and volunteer supervision.

As Operations Manager, Jenn brings a compassionate approach to supporting our kaimahi and the day-to-day running of OutLine. Her attention to detail, passion for statistics, and people-centred leadership will be invaluable as OutLine goes through its current period of significant growth and change.

Jenn (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāpuhi-Nui-Tonu, Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Mākino o Te Arawa) has a long history of volunteer work, and pursued studies in Psychology and Politics.

They live in Tāmaki Makaurau and have previously lived in Poland, Germany and Ireland. When not in the OutLine offices, catch Jenn sipping coffees on Karangahape Road or selecting tunes on the airwaves of 95bFM.

Please join us in congratulating Jenn on the well-deserved promotion and wishing her all the best in her new role!

Yesterday was the end of an era for OutLine Aotearoa, as we said haere rā to our contract counselling team.

OutLine has been providing Rainbow specialist counselling services to our communities for the better part of a decade. However, we recently decided to put this service on hold while we work on bringing counselling in-house as a core service.

OutLine’s contract counselling service was established by Hayden Oswin, who remained a pillar of the service to its end. We thank Hayden for his years of service and wish him all the best.

We’d also like to say a huge thank you and haere rā to the rest of the contract counselling team – Tommy Hamilton, Jacqui Ivankovich, Tabby Besley, Olivia Campbell and Vicky Clothier.

OutLine is excited to be bringing our Rainbow specialist counselling service in-house, and we look forward to sharing updates as we get the new service up and running.

We appreciate the pause in service may be difficult for our communities, and we thank you for your patience. To learn more about why we’re making these changes, and where to find help in the meantime, visit www.outline.org.nz/counselling

(Slide 1 reads) OutLine Aotearoa are making some changes …

In 2023 we undertook an organisation wide service review with our friends at Deloitte.

The review told us that our Counselling service model was not equitable nor was it accessible to all.

Therefore this year we have made the decision to pause our Counselling service as it currently stands and rebuild our service internally with a focus on equity, cultural safety and accessibility.

This means …

(Slide 2 reads) We will not be open for new Counselling referrals as these are on pause.

However …

We will still be operating our Peer Support Services.

Our Phone Line 6pm - 9pm 7 days a week.
0800 OUTLINE

Outline Chat Support is available 6pm - 9pm 7 days a week.
www.outline.org.nz

Trans Peer Support Service and Conversion Practices Survivor Network will both still be available and further information can be found on our website.

We know change can often be unsettling, however, we are committed to our community and to being an equitable and accessible service for all.

OutLine Aotearoa’s incredible Volunteer Coordinator, Jenn Tamati, spoke with 95bFM recently about the spate of vandalism against rainbow pedestrian crossings in Aotearoa.

They told bFM’s The Wire that rainbow communities don’t like to have to respond to hate, but seeing the outpouring of support and togetherness had been beautiful.

“Our communities burst with life and creativity! We are the past, present and future,” Jenn said.

You can listen to the full interview here: https://95bfm.com/bcast/one-week-on-from-k-rds-rainbow-crossing-vandalism-w-outlines-jenn-tamati-april-4-2024

OutLine Aotearoa’s Chief Executive, Emmaline Pickering-Martin, has also spoken out to condemn Destiny Church’s plans to sue councils that fund rainbow events and crossings.

In a statement to RNZ, Emmaline said OutLine Aotearoa stood firmly in support of councils across Aotearoa who are inclusive and act in ways that promote inclusion of takatāpui, MVPFAFF+ and rainbow communities.

“Rainbow communities have always and will always be a part of the fabric of Aotearoa. No amount of vandalism of public property is going to take that away. Neither is the sharing of outright lies by Brian and Hannah Tamaki.”

What does visibility mean when we already feel hypervisible?

Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility, which celebrates the lives of trans people while also raising awareness of the discrimination we face.

It comes after a week in which rainbow communities have been repeatedly under attack throughout Aotearoa, with religious extremists painting over rainbow pedestrian crossings and forcing the cancellation of a community event.

These hateful scenes have shaken many trans, non-binary, irawhiti takatāpui and MVPFAFF+ people in Aotearoa. Many of us already feel hypervisible, and the unwanted attention has only made some of us feel more vulnerable.

So what does visibility even achieve?

Visibillity is about seeing our needs. It’s about seeing the violence and discrimination we face, and standing up to say that’s not what we want in Aotearoa.

Visibility is about seeing us as people. It’s about access to gender-affirming healthcare and mental health support for everyone who needs it.

Visibility is about seeing our community. It’s about acknowledging that we’re stronger when we stand together in solidarity and hope.

Visibility is about aroha. It’s about telling the trans people in your life that they are loved, valued and seen.

And visibility is about resistance. It’s about recognising that trans people have always been here, and that we will never stop fighting for our rights. Never.

Visibility is about refusing to be invisible, and refusing to let hatred win.

27/03/2024

If you’re gender-diverse, here’s a chance to share your insights on the wellbeing impacts of gender-affirming care in Aotearoa.

This quick online survey is being conducted by gender-diverse AUT psychology master’s student Skyler Watt, who is also one of OutLine’s incredible peer support volunteers.

The survey is open to people aged 18 and over who identify as gender-diverse, and have or are planning to access gender-affirming care, including medical and/or psychological support.

Your insights could help shape the future of gender-affirming care and research in Aotearoa, and contribute to a more inclusive and supportive environment for our rainbow whānau.

The survey is voluntary, anonymous, and super easy, taking less than 20 minutes to complete. You can take part any time through to June 2024.

To find out more and take part, visit: https://aut.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_escJnuL5IIiXtQ2

This survey is being conducted by AUT, and OutLine has no involvement in the survey or results. We’re sharing this because we think it’s important, and aligns with our kaupapa for supporting research.

OutLine is going through some changes – but we’re still here to help.

Last year, we undertook a review of the way we deliver support services to our rainbow, takatāpui and MVPFAFF+ communities, their whānau, friends and those questioning.

We listened to your feedback, and we’re now implementing changes to ensure we can reach everyone in Aotearoa who needs our help.

You might not hear from us as much while we undertake this mahi, but our core support services aren’t going anywhere.

Our free and confidential support line and online chat service remain available every day from 6pm to 9pm. You can call us on 0800 OUTLINE or visit outline.org.nz/chat to talk to a trained volunteer from Aotearoa’s rainbow communities.

OutLine is also here to provide peer support services for trans and non-binary folx in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and for survivors of conversion practices nationwide.

While we undertake these changes, wait times for our counselling service will be longer than usual. If you’ve made a referral, please be assured that your application is safe in our system, and we will update you as soon as possible.

The team here at OutLine are hugely excited about our plans for the future, and we look forward to reconnecting with you again when we have more to share.

Happy Pride Month from the OutLine whānau!

Pride is a time for our rainbow, takatāpui and MVPFAFF+ communities to come together in joy, celebration and solidarity.

It’s also a time for resistance. As our rainbow communities continue to face significant challenges, it’s more important than ever to make our voices heard.

At OutLine, we’re committed to building an Aotearoa where rainbow people are valued, loved, and have access to the support services they need. This Pride Month, we invite you to join us in celebration and solidarity.

OutLine will be at the Big Gay Out in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on Sunday 18 February. We’d love for you to stop by the OutLine stall to kōrero, get a Polaroid snap, or show your support by picking up some OutLine merch.

The OutLine whānau will also be coming together to march in solidarity and resistance in the Auckland Pride March on Sunday 25 February.

For those of you outside Tāmaki, stay tuned for updates on Pride events this March in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington and Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Emmaline is a Māmā, writer, teacher, dreamer and community worker. She holds a Masters degree in Pacific Studies with a focus on Mental Health and is currently completing her PhD in Pacific Studies.

The holidays can be a tough time for many rainbow people, especially for those who feel isolated or whose whānau don’t embrace their identities. OutLine will be here to help when we can.

Our volunteer-run phone support service will remain available throughout the holiday period. If you are seeking support, you can call 0800 OUTLINE daily between 6pm-9pm. This service is available nationwide and is free, all-ages and confidential.

Because our support line relies on volunteer capacity and availability, there may be times when volunteers are unavailable over the holiday period. You can leave a message for a volunteer to call you back, or feel free to try calling another time.

We’ve prioritised phone support coverage over the holidays, which means our online chat service will be temporarily unavailable until early 2024.

If you make a referral to one of our other support services, we’ll get back to you as soon as we can in the new year.

If you need more immediate support, please access one of the support services at https://outline.org.nz/other-services/ or if anyone is in immediate physical danger phone 111.

We hope you have a restful holiday period, and we look forward to seeing you all for Pride in 2024.

Today, OutLine says haere rā to our incredible Chief Executive Claire Black.

For four years, Claire led OutLine through a period of huge growth. She worked closely with the Board and staff to transform OutLine into a financially viable organisation with strong governance. She oversaw the significant expansion of our rainbow specialist counselling service, and established or renewed contracts to deliver Trans Peer Support, the Conversion Practices Survivor Network, and employee assistance programmes. She was integral to our rebrand and helped to boost OutLine’s profile in the media and through numerous speaking engagements.

Claire also rose to meet significant challenges, most notably leading the OutLine team safely though the Covid pandemic. This included establishing systems to enable phone support volunteers to take calls remotely, and introducing a new online chat support service to reach even more rainbow people throughout Aotearoa. Claire also worked hard to ensure staff wellbeing through recent difficult times, including the Tāmaki Makaurau floods and the rise of transphobia in Aotearoa.

Claire has been a tireless advocate for rainbow mental health in Aotearoa, and has helped to foster close collaboration and good governance within the wider rainbow sector. She has also shown a strong commitment to upholding Te Tiriti and has helped to embed this within OutLine’s kaupapa.

OutLine’s Board, staff, counsellors and volunteers recently met to say farewell to Claire and thank her for four years of incredible mahi. Claire’s legacy will be one of significant growth, compassionate leadership, financial stability and greatly improved governance. She will be sorely missed, but will always be part of the OutLine whānau. ❤🏳️‍🌈

As Trans Week of Awareness comes to a close, it’s a time to reflect on the trans people we’ve lost in the last year.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is marked every year on 20 November, in memory of trans and gender diverse people around the world whose lives were taken in acts of anti-transgender violence.

This Monday, our trans, non-binary, irawhiti takatāpui and MVPFAFF+ communities will come together for a special Trans Day of Remembrance service at Māngere Arts Centre.

The service is open to all rainbow people and allies who wish to show solidarity and support for our trans communities. There will be an opportunity to light candles in remembrance and share some kai.

With a new wave of Covid underway, please stay home if you are sick, and consider wearing a mask. The venue will be well ventilated and hand sanitiser will be available.

The service will be held from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Monday 20 November at Māngere Arts Centre, located at the corner of Bader Drive and Orly Avenue in Māngere, Auckland.

We’re incredibly proud of OutLine volunteer Margaret Chea, who recently received a scholarship partly in recognition of her mahi for our phone and chat support services.

The MAS Here for Good Scholarship is awarded to students who actively volunteer and make a difference in their communities. As well as volunteering at OutLine, Margaret is a student at the University of Auckland, studying an Arts and Science conjoint degree majoring in psychology, Chinese and statistics.

Margaret says she was drawn to volunteering with Outline because supporting rainbow people, their friends and family “felt like the right path for me”.

She says being an OutLine volunteer can sometimes be challenging, but is also “hugely rewarding”, particularly when she can make a real difference.

“For example, I recently had a conversation with someone who was just starting to explore their gender identity. I was probably the first person they really opened up to about that, and they even asked if I could help them find a new gender-affirming name. To me, that was very special.”

Margaret has generously decided to donate some of her scholarship to OutLine, to help us deliver rainbow-affirming mental health support throughout Aotearoa.

Today is International Pronouns Day!

Sharing pronouns shows solidarity with and support for trans and non-binary communities. When cis allies share their pronouns, it helps to create safe spaces where sharing pronouns is normalised, and trans and non-binary identities are respected.

Remember that not all trans and non-binary people feel comfortable sharing their pronouns, and that’s ok! Nobody should ever have to share their pronouns if they’re not ready to.

Cis allies can help to make trans and non-binary people feel more comfortable by regularly sharing their own pronouns. It could be as simple as including your pronouns in a Zoom meeting introduction, adding them to your social media bio, or sharing them in your email signature.

To learn more about pronouns and why they’re so important, visit www.pronouns.org

OutLine Aotearoa is excited to be launching a new Conversion Practices Survivor Network – a safe space where conversion practices survivors can connect with other survivors.

The network will allow survivors throughout Aotearoa to attend online peer support group meetings, share their experiences, provide mutual support, and share strategies for healing.

We're holding a community consultation hui to let you know what we've got planned, hear your ideas about what support you need, and learn how we can provide for the different needs of our communities.

Join us for the online hui from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on Thursday, 12 October via Zoom. You can sign up here: https://outlineaotearoa.wildapricot.org/event-5443975

If you can’t make it to the hui, we’d still like to hear your ideas – just email us at [email protected]

Today is Celebrate Bis*xuality Day, which concludes Bis*xual Awareness Week in solidarity and aroha with bi people everywhere.

Bis*xuality isn’t binary – it’s the attraction to people of two or more genders. Bi people can be cis, trans or non-binary, and can be attracted to people who are cis, trans or non-binary.

Bis*xuality is a spectrum, not a 50/50 attraction to two genders. Attraction varies from individual to individual, and there are as many bis*xual preferences as there are bi people.

All bis*xual people are valid, regardless of who they’re currently dating or used to date. Bi people don’t have to prove their s*xuality, and they don’t owe anyone their dating history.

Bis*xuality isn’t a phase or a stepping stone to being gay. Bis*xuality is just like any other s*xuality – bis*xual people have always been here, and always will be.

Today and every day is a chance to celebrate the bis*xual people in your lives, let them know they are seen and valid, and show them the love and respect they deserve.

If you or someone you know needs to talk about bis*xuality, or anything else to do with s*xuality or gender identity, OutLine is here to help. Our free and confidential peer support line and online chat service are available every day from 6pm to 9pm at 0800 OUTLINE and outline.org.nz/chat

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week may be a tough one for many in our trans, non-binary, irawhiti and MVPFAFF+ communities.

With trans rights in the spotlight again, many in our communities are feeling anxious, confused, angry and upset.

OutLine is here to help. We’re a nationwide rainbow mental health support organisation, providing a free phone and online chat support service for all rainbow people throughout Aotearoa.

You can call us on 0800 OUTLINE, or message us at outline.org.nz/chat, every day between 6pm to 9pm. This week, we have volunteers ready to provide chat support on Monday and Tuesday, and both phone and chat support on Wednesday.

We also offer nationwide rainbow specialist counselling and Auckland-based trans peer support. You can learn more about these services and make a referral at outline.org.nz

We’re excited to welcome Jordan Walker (they/them) to the OutLine Governance Board!

Jordan (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa, Ngāti Porou, Ngaiterangi) grew up in, and currently resides in Te Tairāwhiti, Gisborne, with their partner and pēpē. Jordan identifies as takatāpui and tangata irawhiti. They work within the arts sector, and are a strong advocate for the arts, for gender diverse communities and for Māori communities living in areas of high deprivation.

A Massey University graduate, Jordan is also a social anthropologist with research focused on indigenizing value in the arts, and the work economy at large. This research ties into their advocacy for low income whānau and communities; championing the value of their time by pushing for pay equity and fair treatment, while also amplifying the value of the arts for the wellbeing of communities.

OutLine's Board is elected by our members, but our constitution allows additional Board members to be appointed if they have skills and qualifications that might otherwise be missing. We're thrilled to have Jordan's valuable perspectives on the Board to help shape OutLine's strategic direction.
