Kaiako - Tutor: Literacy and Numeracy Learning

We are seeking applications from experienced literacy and numeracy tutors for a number of part-time positions to support our diverse communities in the Ōtautahi /Christchurch and wider Aoraki/Canterbury Region.

Literacy Aotearoa delivers accessible quality programmes designed to ensure the peoples of Aotearoa are critically literate and able to realise their full social, cultural, and economic potential.

Programmes are fully funded for eligible learners, and build on their knowledge and experiences to enhance their confidence and capabilities. Learners celebrate their successes and achievements, growing their independence, confidence and resilience.

You will be part of a local team of educators based out of our Christchurch Site, who are passionate in their understanding that increased literacy and numeracy skills leads to increased opportunities, including employment and further education for learners, and potentially their whānau, families and communities.

Literacy Aotearoa is committed to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, working to a strong value base, and contributing to the wellbeing of our learners, our communities, and our country.

Te āhuatunga a te tūranga - About the Role

Reporting to the local Site Coordinator based in Christchurch, the Kaiako - Tutor is responsible for delivering Literacy Aotearoa programmes to learners who seek to increase their literacy and numeracy competencies. Programmes and resources are provided but you will need to ensure that they match the needs of the learners you work with, and when necessary, seek alternative resources, appropriate to their needs.

Opportunities to deliver online programmes across the motu may become available.
Casual/fixed-term tutor positions may lead to permanent part-time positions.

He pūkenga tou - Skills and Experience

You will:
• Preferably hold a minimum of an adult or tertiary teaching qualification (NZCATT L4). For the right candidates with the right experience we can also offer opportunities to earn while you train to achieve these qualifications.
• Have proven experience in delivering literacy and numeracy teaching
• Need to demonstrate a commitment to the kaupapa to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Flexibility in tuition delivery (days and times) will be viewed favourably. Programmes are delivered in groups of learners, and face-to-face. Literacy Aotearoa is also able to deliver programmes using multiple online platforms, such as Moodle and Microsoft Teams.

You will need to have:

• Flexibility to deliver daytime or evening classes;
• Digital competency in working with Microsoft Office 365 and online learning platforms
• Ability to interact with learners of differing knowledge levels and skills
• Knowledge of how to deliver and assess unit standards, or be willing to undertake training to achieve unit standards 4098, 11551 and 11552 is desirable
• Experience in engaging with Māori, Pasifika and at-risk youth in education
• Experience assessing and working with young people and adults who have not previously had education success.

Conservation Volunteers New Zealand connects people with nature through volunteering and also runs the Conservation Work Skills (CWS) programme.

Literacy Aotearoa collaborates with CWS in a number of regions to deliver education to participants, supporting their skills development and their chances of employment success.

Here is the Nelson/Whakatū CWS group in the classroom working with their Literacy Aotearoa tutor and CWS team leader.

The Conservation Work Skills (CWS) programme was developed by Conservation Volunteers New Zealand in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and aims to equip participants with practical and transferable skills and provide opportunities for local job seekers to gain paid employment in conservation related work. The CWS programme is effective and has run since 2018. It recognises that caring for the environment provides a platform for engaging with people, building skills and employment pathways, as well as improved health and wellbeing.
