You may remember last term, we let you know about Year 13 student, Ollie Tangney being selected through the Young Enterprise Scheme for an amazing trip to Brazil. Ollie headed away during the recent holidays and has shared a snap shot of his time away.
Thank you for your excellent representation of Bayfield High School Ollie!
"I was fortunate to be selected for an all-expenses-paid, week-long trip to Sรฃo Paulo, Brazil, in early October this year with 7 other Kiwi students from across the country as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme. The application process required me to create a 90-second video answering questions such as why I wanted to go, how I would work in a team, fun facts I knew about Brazil and business in Brazil, any prior experiences I had with the country, and why I should be selected.
During the week, we collaborated with 4 local Brazilian students and visited a variety of businesses around Sรฃo Paulo, including local Brazilian companies, Kiwi businesses, and enterprises started by Kiwis in Brazil. Some of the companies we visited included NZTE, Santo Grรฃo, Delicari, and Natura. We also took part in workshops about how business operates in Brazil and experienced different cultural activities each day, such as Samba, Capoeira, Portuguese language lessons, and lessons on Brazilian history.
The food was incredible! We enjoyed Brazilian BBQ, empanadas, and meals at local restaurants while listening to traditional Brazilian music. Beyond the food and cultural experiences, we built lifelong friendships, sharing many laughs and creating unforgettable memories. We also shared eye-opening experiences such as seeing the severe social inequality in Brazil, where favelas sat right next to some of the wealthiest areas, separated by just a fence.
Throughout the week, we also worked on a business challenge related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Our task was to create a fictional New Zealand-based business that addressed a problem related to our chosen SDG and to develop a market entry strategy for Brazil. We then had five minutes to pitch our business idea to three judges at the end of the week.
This experience was truly one of the best times of my life, and Iโm extremely grateful for the opportunities I was given.
Obrigado,
Ollie"
It's the season of celebrations! Last night along with our school Sport and Cultural Prizegiving, two of our outstanding Pasifika students were acknowledged as high achievers at the Pasifika Awards Scholarship presentations that were held at the Otago Polytechnic.
Awards are offered to two students from each Dunedin school, one junior and one senior. Our recipients were Mia Michalik (Junior) and Ray Wate (Senior) This event is a chance to recognise the hard work, dedication and success of local Pasifika students.
Well done Mia and Ray!
Over the course of the year, our ๐ฆ๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ฉ๐ผ๐น๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ฟ๐บ๐ group has been actively knitting and crocheting squares to create blankets for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Dunedin Hospital.
SVA volunteers Neha, Kaela, Brianna and Evie met with Shelley from NICU today to donate the blankets and hats crafted by the entire group.
Tonight we are celebrating the successes of our students at our Sports & Cultural prize giving.
All those students who are receiving an award have been notified, along with their whฤnau.
We would like to welcome everyone along with doors opening from 6.30-pm for a 7pm start.
Students - polish those shoes up and iron your shirts! Remember to be in correct school uniform.
On Friday 25th October, we will be holding our annual ๐ฅ๐๐ฆ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐น at lunchtime.
Aligning with our value of service, each tutor group has selected a charity to support and will run a stall at lunchtime.
There are a variety of stalls including activities for students to participate in and items for students to purchase.
RISE token currency will be used for this event and all proceeds will be donated to the charity of the tutor group who collects the most tokens. Students can purchase five RISE tokens for $1.00 and these will be on sale for cash sales at Thursday lunchtime in the main quad, or Friday interval and lunchtime. Eftpos sales are only available on Friday lunchtime.

A reminder that tomorrow is a Teacher Only Day for all of our students.
See you all back on Tuesday morning ๐
Kaela Freeland (Year 13) and Olivia Duffy (Year 12) have both returned from a 21 day Outward Bound Trust of New Zealand adventure!
Both girls were in separate "watch houses", spending their days in the beautiful Anakiwa, Marlborough Sounds with other 16-18 year olds from all over New Zealand.
While on this amazing course both girls were pushed past their own limits, given the opportunity to reinvent themselves all while building resilience and living in the moment.
New friends were made and amazing memories created from this amazing experience!
Good luck to ex-Bayfield student Harmony who will be competing in the Young Plumber of the Year competition next week!!

Our school had a strong presence at the Handball Regional finals last weekend, with three students participating.
Anika Franklyn (Year 11) competed for the Otago Women's team, which placed fourth, and Taylor Brown (Year 12) and Brodie Jones (Year 10) were part of the Otago Men's team, finishing third.
Their selection to these teams at such a young age is truly commendable.
Well done Anika, Taylor and Brodie!
During the holidays, four of our Textiles Technology students were lucky enough to experience World of WearableArt (WOW) and spend some time looking at the fashion industry in Wellington.
Alice Anderson, Georgia Eymor (both Year 13), Celia Wild and Abigail Gilfedder (Year 12) headed away for a busy few days with Miss Duncan.
They spent their days exploring Wellington, including a visit to Massey University where they had a tour and got to talk about the fashion & design courses on offer there.
The group also visited well known local businesses โ Untouched World, Nisa and Kow Tow where they learnt the ins and outs from design, production right through to the retail aspects of these businesses.
The Royal New Zealand Ballet costume department was a highlight of the trip where Miss Duncan and the students got to explore the different roles and look at some of the amazing costumes โ Miss Duncan even got to play dress up!!
The cherry on the top of course was an evening at the World of WearableArt (WOW)show! The creativity on stage was amazing and had everyone buzzing!! They even bumped into some familiar faces there :)
Thank you Miss Duncan for organising this amazing trip for our students ๐

In the last week of Term 3, the school was treated to a selection of food and activities on offer from the Year 10 and 11 Enterprise students.
These students had to come up with a business idea, market it and then sell their product at lunchtime. We had all sorts on offer from drinks, honey, baking, sponge the teacher, car wash plus many more stalls.
Well done to everyone involved in the lunchtime market, and a big thank you to Ms Sandri and Mr Milne for their help.

Bayfield High School competed in the NZ Secondary School Curling Competition in Naseby at the start of the school holidays.
Our senior team, the Bayfield Burlers, placed fourth overall after a nail-biting loss to Columba College on the final stone in the bronze medal match.
Skip, Davina Du led her long-time teammates, Tahlia Jones and Mekฤlo Jackson, superbly throughout the tournament, and together they brilliantly guided young lead Ella Garbett through her first National competition. Coach Tahlia P. was extremely proud of the team, as were Managers Ms Darling and Mr Surline, especially after their earlier win over local experts, Maniototo Area School.
Our junior team, the Bayfield Rockstars, placed seventh overall.
Skip, Chris Gray enjoyed the tournament, skilfully guiding the four young newcomers through the competition. Max Ballard, Harrison Diver, Felix Kaan and Jackson Surline all represented Bayfield admirably. Coach Josh D. was proud of his young teamโs efforts, and Ms Darling and Mr Surline were equally pleased with their two wins in what was a tough competition, featuring three teams from Auckland and five from the South Island.
Congratulations to the tournament winners, Otago Boys' High School, and runners-up, Maniototo Area School. Special recognition also goes to both Spirit of Curling trophy winners from Long Bay High School.
We hope everyone made it through the last few days safe and dry. What a wild few days! It was so good to see the ๐ briefly today, and may it continue to dry everything up.
In the last week of Term Three, we celebrated the 2024 New Zealand Chinese Language Week.
Our Year 11/12 Chinese students practised Tai Chi with the national Chinese language adviser, Dr. Jiwei Fu, and our language assistant, Luke. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art, also a sport and a form of exercise providing benefits to mental and physical health.
Students from our Year 10/11 classes performed a Chinese Fan Dance choreographed by Erika Reilly during the Best of Bayfield concert, showcasing their expertise in Chinese folk dance.
Year 9 students created a shadow puppet play (Pรญ yวng xรฌ) and performed a dialogue in Chinese. Meanwhile, students learned about the traditions and the legendary story of the recently passed Mid-Autumn Festival, and made mooncakes. We wrapped up this yearโs Chinese Language Week with a vibrant celebration of culture, learning, and community.
Last Wednesday we held our annual Best of Bayfield concert. This was a showcase of our Performing Arts students' work from throughout the year.
We had items from the kapa haka group, orchestra, choir, dance groups, show numbers to name just a few!! We certainly have some talent here at Bayfield!
It was a great night and such a fantastic way to end a busy term 3 :)
