👁️ It's Glaucoma Awareness Month! 👁️
Did you know Glaucoma, or "mate pēhinga karu" in Te Reo Māori, is a potentially preventable eye disease leading to progressive optic nerve damage and potential blindness. Over 80, 1 in 10 face this risk. Often symptomless, regular eye checks from 45 are crucial. Treatments exist, and with proper care, less than 2% lose vision to glaucoma. Regular eye checks and swift action are vital for managing glaucoma and preserving eye health.
For more helpful info on Glaucoma, check out our blog page here: https://hubs.la/Q02gmpWW0 and spread the word!
Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it… unless you’re dealing with eyewear prescriptions 👓😅
Our Matthews Eyecare practice was graced with a gorgeous pair of spectacles from 1954 – brought in by a repeat customer, picking up his newly dispensed optics.
The beautifully delicate hand typed note states: “These lenses, supplied by Mr. James Bates, F.B.O.A., are made of the highest crown glass and are optically perfect. They conform to the highest world standard of scientific accuracy.”
We cherish this little glimpse into the practice’s history – a stunning reminder of why we do what we do 💪

Huzzah! It's Contact Lens Safety Month. 🌟
Did you know the first contact lens was designed by Leonardo da Vinci in 1508? Unsurprisingly his idea of wearing a water-filled glass hemisphere over the eye was a bit impractical. It took until 1888 for the first fitted contact lens (made from blown glass) to be made, constructed by Adolf Fick, a German ophthalmologist.
Thankfully modern contact lenses are a lot more flexible, comfortable, and hygienic - however it’s still worth knowing how to keep your eyes healthy when wearing them to reduce the risk of infection.
To keep your eyes sparkling and infection-free, follow these easy tips:
1) Wash those hands with soap and water before handling your lenses. Then give them a good dry with a lint-free towel.
2) Stay clear of water when you've got lenses on - no swimming, hot tubbing, or lens rinsing with tap or sterile water.
3) Stick to your lens schedule, as prescribed by your eyecare pro.
4) When cleaning, use fresh solution, give those lenses a gentle rub with your fingertips, and follow up with a rinse.
5) Clean your lens case with fresh solution (no water) and leave it to air dry, wide open.
6) Remember, saliva isn't sterile - keep it away from your lenses!
7) Never share your lenses with others.
8) No old solution or "topping off" your lens case, and never use damaged cases - they can be sources of contamination and infection.
9) If your eyes aren't playing nice, remove your lenses and call your eyecare pro pronto!
Show your lenses some love this month by ramping up your lens routine. Your eyes, your rules! 🎭🤓

Attention, outdoors enthusiasts and athletes 👁️🌄🚴♂️! September is Sports Eye Health Safety Month in Aotearoa, and it's the perfect time to ensure your eyes are in top form for peak performance. Here's what you need to know:
1️⃣ Protect Those Peepers: Sports can expose your eyes to various risks, from fast-flying balls to UV rays. Always wear appropriate eye protection, such as safety goggles or sports-specific UV protected eyewear. They shield your eyes from impact, debris, and harmful UV radiation.
2️⃣ Regular Eye Check-ups: Athletes rely on their vision for precision and coordination. Regular eye exams can detect issues early and ensure you have the best possible vision. Don't wait until you notice problems—schedule your eye exam today!
3️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can affect your overall health, including your eyes. Keep your body well-hydrated, especially during intense training sessions or competitions.
4️⃣ Rest and Recovery: Overworking your eyes, whether from screen time or intense training, can strain them. Practice the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. It's a simple way to reduce eye strain.
5️⃣ Nutrition Matters: A balanced diet rich in nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants is essential for eye health. Fuel your body with the right nutrients for optimal vision.
7️⃣ Know the Warning Signs: Be aware of symptoms like eye fatigue, blurred vision, or unusual sensitivity to light. These can be signs of eye strain or other issues that require attention.
Your eyes are your most valuable tools in sports. Take the necessary steps to protect and maintain them so you can continue excelling in your chosen activities. 🏀🎾⚽ Catch the cause early, and go beyond regular eyecare at Matthews. Book a comprehensive eye exam today at https://hubs.la/Q021TBz10

It’s no secret we have some of the best in the business here at Matthews Dunedin. As part of our recent move and re-brand, we wanted to shine a spotlight 🔦 on the years of experience residing behind our new doors. Without further ado we’d love to introduce you to Sharon Tipler, our brilliant Specialist Eyewear Consultant.
“Hi, I'm Sharon! I've been working in Optometry since leaving school 🏫 (it’s a secret just how long that is). I love interacting with people and helping them find their forever frames. I've been with Matthews (formerly Beaumont & Bridgmount) for almost 21 years after moving to Dunedin from the Waikato with my Husband and twin daughters. The move to Dunedin was one of the best decisions we've made.
Outside of work I have a busy life, spending time with my daughters and 5 grandchildren, I’m very involve with my church and also enjoy all sorts of crafts and cooking when I have time 🧶🎨👩🍳.
An area of Optometry I enjoy is Irlen Syndrome. This is when colour lenses help improve vision, the lenses stop the words and music jumping around on a page, it makes reading more enjoyable and you can retain the information you have read... and a list of other things. This can be life changing for both children and adults, some of whom have spent years not being able to easily read books 📚 and music 🎶. We received a letter from one lady saying she always thought she was stupid because reading was so difficult, and she couldn't learn to play the piano because she couldn't read the music. So for her it was a whole new life!!”

Hey everyone, meet Naomi Simpson! She's our go-to Specialist Eyewear Consultant who's got a great eye for style and can help you find the perfect frames to match your personality. And can we just take a moment to appreciate the amazing talent in our Dunedin practice? These guys know their stuff and have helped so many of our customers achieve optimal eye health! So, without further ado, here’s a little bit more about Naomi:
“I started working in the Optical Industry in 2004 after I finished high school, and I've been lucky enough to spend my whole career working for independent optometry practices. I love that I can tailor visual solutions to suit everyone and have fun while doing it.
Dunedin is the place I call home; my husband and I love raising our two daughters here. We're spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor pursuits but also have easy access to city life when we want it. The best of both worlds some might say. I'm a musician, a runner, and a bookworm. Music is one of my greatest passions - I play the flute, the piccolo and the piano and I run a community orchestra, a group of more than thirty musicians aged from 14 to 94!
While I love frames that are big and bold, I really do have a soft spot for finding something that is quietly quirky - one of my favourite frames (and the one I'm currently wearing) is the asymmetric JF Rey 2650.”

This phenomenal man is Stephen Springthorpe: a specialist eyewear consultant extraordinaire by day, and outdoor enthusiast by night 👓🚴🔥. We wanted to give you a taste of the experience we have here at Dunedin branch, so without further ado, here's a little more about Stephen and his talents:
"Kia ora! I've been in optics for over 40 years, working across several practices scattered across New Zealand. I have gained immense technical skills during my career, attending optical conferences across Australia, New Zealand, and Spain. It's been an incredibly rewarding and diverse career to explore over the years, and I feel fortunate to be part of the team here in Dunedin.
As for hobbies, I enjoy the outdoors with running, biking, kayaking, and paddle boarding. As such I know the importance of having a reliable pair of sports eyewear. My absolute favourite is Serengeti - which is a great option for driving sunglasses."
