It's great to share an Instagram post () from the Dunedin City Council Arts and Culture—Ara Toi office on Ngaruaroha Martin, the DSO's Principal Second Violin, celebrating Māori language week!
Kia ora e te whanau, Kia ora e te whanau, kei te pēhea te pēhea koe?
This year’s theme for Māori language week is✊🏽Ake Ake Ake A Forever Language: Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori ✊🏽
In celebration of this theme, we come to you with a unique, ataahua story of a local Māori practitioner whose practice is one cultivated through aroha and support from her whānau, a passion for waiata and a journey that brought her down to Ōtepoti - all the way from Whangārei!
Ngaruaroha Martin (Nga Puhi, Tainui, Hapu-Ngathine, Ngati-Mahuta) attended Waikato University, completing her Bachelor of 🎶Music🎶 and eventually moving with her husband to Ōtepoti in 2017.
Upon arrival, Ngaru worked across industries including hospitality and a stint at the renowned Cadburys factory. Ngaru got in touch with the wonderful folk at the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, who were able to keep her up to date with auditions. In 2022, Ngaru successfully auditioned for principal 2nd violin 👏🏽👏🏽
Meanwhile, Ngaru’s professional career veered towards building 🔨🪛
Ngaru successfully completed her pre-trade qualification and is currently completing her apprenticeship. When asked what she liked most about her mahi, Ngaru highlighted gratification.
“I enjoy the opportunity to create things from start to finish. There is something very satisfying about completing a project and seeing the difference you have made – whether that is improving the safety or accessibility of a space.”
Ngaru’s mahi is about working alongside others cooperatively, no doubt something she had immense practice in, both in being part of a large whānau and in performing with the orchestra. “Its great to be part of the group. We are heavily reliant on holding the beat, and that requires everyone.”
It is with pleasure that we highlight Ngaru’s journey as a multi-talented wahine toa for this year’s Te Wiki o te reo Māori creative profile 🥰🙌🏽🫶🏽
In her ability to occupy space across industry, art form and practice, Ngaru represents the breadth of talent we are fortunate enough to have here in Ōtepoti.
Big thank you to Ngaru for her time and contributions - all the best upcoming performances and completing the apprenticeship 🥽🦺🔧🎶🎼🎻

📢🎶 Kia ora e te whānau! 🎶📢
This week, we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) here in Aotearoa New Zealand, and we’re excited to honour the beauty of puoro (music) through the power of te reo Māori! 🎵✨
🎻 To mark this special week, we share this photo from our 'Journeys' concert in July performing 'Rerenga' composed by Michael Norris and performed by Alistair Fraser as part of the Puaka Matariki Festival in Ōtepoti Dunedin . 🎶
Kia kaha te reo Māori! (Let the Māori language be strong!)
Join us in saying, “E te iwi, let’s celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori!” 🌏💚

"🎸 A lovely interview and article in this month's The Listener with the renowned Karin Schaupp, our guitar soloist in our 'Other Lands' concert! 🎶 She will be performing Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez' this weekend at the King's and Queen's Performing Arts Centre. Don't miss this opportunity to experience musical brilliance! 🎼✨"
Last Saturday we were very happy to collaborate with the School of Performing Arts, University of Otago to present our annual Composers Workshop. Four young composers had their orchestral works played, workshopped, and recorded by the orchestra. Many composition students don't get the chance to have their works performed by a full, live orchestra at this early stage of their career, so we're very pleased to provide this important opportunity to the music-makers of the future. Congratulations to Clara Satherley, Jordan Rogers, Grace Shaw and Cameron Monteath on their fantastic works!

The Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, celebrated its 50th anniversary year in 2016, is Dunedin's only professional orchestra, and one of four orchestras in New Zealand funded recurrently by Creative New Zealand. The orchestra plays an extensive cultural role in Dunedin and in the wider communities in Otago and Southland, as well as many more through other media. The orchestra’s annual programme includes a five-concert subscription series, featuring high calibre conductors and soloists from overseas and from New Zealand, and some of NZ’s finest composers.
The programme also includes a wide variety of concerts, such as chamber music concerts, Proms, performing with the Topp Twins, and the Dunedin Sound Songs and Singers (Tally Ho!) concerts. Its education programmes include schools concerts, a junior academy, masterclasses and workshops, and scholarships. It accompanies productions by resident and touring opera, ballet, including of course the Royal New Zealand Ballet, musical and choral companies, and it tours to regional centres, such as Wanaka.
The orchestra size varies from 65 – 70 players for full symphonic concerts to 35 for its chamber orchestra concerts. The DSO players are part-time and they range in experience from one player who has been in the orchestra for all of the orchestra’s 50 years, to another who was in the NZSO for 20 years, to new students.
The orchestra has very strong ties with the University of Otago’s Music Department, including collaborative projects for performance, conducting and composition students and lecturers.
