Thank you The Sunrise Foundation - Gisborne/Tairawhiti for supporting us to do the mahi that we do with the tamariki and rangatahi that we're lucky to coach!

Patu Tahi Boxing Club were thrilled to receive a $3000 grant from Sunrise which they used to support ongoing operating costs, enabling the club to focus on their young boxers and supporting them to cover travel costs.

Run by twelve dedicated volunteer coaches, six of them female, they are the only registered club in Tairāwhiti coaching amateur boxing. And, the kids love it! With over 100 youth aged 6-18 years attending boxing classes throughout the week, there is a waitlist of approximately 60 more ready and waiting.

"We have high discipline and are consistent with the kids. They know what to expect when they come to trainings and that we're here for them if they needs us in other ways," says Kylie Kahukwa, coach.

“We really appreciate that Sunrise gave us a grant and that they recognise we use boxing as a vehicle to teach these kids resilience, discipline, community and connection.”

Whilst many of the youth that attend are not at a competitive level, for those that are, travelling for matches is the only way they are able to compete at a high level. But, of course this comes with a huge expense which is challenging for many of the families involved.

"It requires a lot of fundraising and support for our competitive kids to travel and compete. And of course, there will always be a coach or coaches travelling with them, whether that’s around NZ or sometimes even internationally," says Kim-Maree Larby, head coach.

“So, thanks Sunrise, for giving us a grant so we can keep the lights on and put our money back in to help our kids.”

Our community is mourning with the whānau of these fishermen that no doubt would have been brave right to the very end. Our love goes out their wives, their babies and their most nearest and dearest whānau and friends. If you can spare any amount of koha to help the whānau over the coming days, weeks, months, here are 4 links to donate too 🤍🤍🤍

Heart is so broken for our region, Tairāwhiti ❤️‍🩹
For our land once again soaked through
And for the whānau of the three men, lost to the ocean
Devastated for their loved ones and feeling very helpless

This picture was taken this morning, with the 3 manu flying over the water in perfect timing🕊️🤍🥹

Please if you can koha do so 😞

We send our thoughts and love to Mals family at this time.

We will announce further details regarding honouring Malcolm when we have them.

If you would like to send flowers to the family please send them to 30 Fitzroy Street, Palmerston North.

Golden Gloves 2024 done and dusted. Finishing up with 2 Golden Glove titles🥇🥇Well done Kiarn and Lennox!!

Challenging fight for Khadyn this weekend, but he done us proud. We knew it was going to be tough, even without the W, we couldn't have asked for a more solid perfomance from him.

Kiarn, absolutely showed skill and growth in his fight. He adjusted where needed and listened as required. Coming away with the win and subsequently the Golden Gloves Cadet Male Open 48kg title 🙌

Lennox put in the mahi at the gym and in his previous bouts allowing him to qualify and be nomimated to compete at his very first Golden Gloves tournament. He was unopposed in his division but still took out the Golden Gloves title for Junior Male Novice 48kg 👏

Big shout out to coach Rob for the massive amounts of work he continues to put in with these boxers!

Massive mahi team! Back in the gym tomorrow and looking forward to the next tournament!

And this is the part most people don't see about our club. At the end of every tournament before heading home we finish up with a game of "Popcorn". It's a game where everyone on the trip speaks about a positive for themselves, a positive for someone else and some constructive criticism for themself or someone else. Being able to finish a tournament this way enables us to leave the focus on us as individuals and us as a team/club so we can be better, stronger and more driven for the next one 👌🔥👏
