September is Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month.
PCOS is a common hormonal disorder affecting millions of women. While it's estimated that around 1 in 10 women have PCOS, the actual number may be higher due to undiagnosed cases.
PCOS can disrupt your hormone balance, leading to a range of symptoms. These often start in your late teens or early 20s and can vary in severity.
Common PCOS symptoms include:
• Irregular or absent periods: Many women with PCOS experience irregular menstrual cycles, lighter bleeding, or no periods at all.
• Infertility: PCOS is a leading cause of infertility due to irregular ovulation.
• Excess hair growth: Unwanted hair on the face, chest, or abdomen is common in women with PCOS.
• Acne: Persistent acne beyond your teenage years can be a sign of PCOS.
• Hair thinning: Some women with PCOS experience hair loss similar to male pattern baldness.
• Weight gain: PCOS can increase your risk of becoming overweight or obese.
It's important to note that not every woman with PCOS experiences all of these symptoms, and the severity can vary.
If you're concerned about PCOS and want to speak to Dr Tava, email [email protected] or call 0212214183.
Early diagnosis and management can help improve your overall health and wellbeing.

Women's health is unique, and sometimes you need an expert. A gynaecologist specialises in the female reproductive system, including the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and v***a. While your primary care doctor is great for routine checkups, they may refer you to a gynaecologist for more specialised issues.
Gynaecologists are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions that many women experience. This includes concerns about irregular periods, pelvic pain, fertility, fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, v***ar skin conditions and gynaecological cancers. They also perform various procedures, such as minimally invasive laparoscopies (keyhole surgery) to hysteroscopies for examining the womb. Additionally, they can remove fibroids or cysts and perform hysterectomies if necessary.

This July is Fibroid Awareness Month.
A fibroid is a non-cancerous (benign) growth of the womb (uterus). They are also called uterine myomas, fibromyomas or leiomyomas. Their size can vary. Some are the same size as a pea and some can be as big as a melon.
Fibroids are common. It is difficult to know exactly how common they are as many women won't have any symptoms, and so may not know they have fibroids. Probably at least 1 in 2 women develop one or more fibroids in their lifetime, and probably more. They usually develop in women aged 30-50 and can sometimes run in families. It is common to have several fibroids of various sizes, although some women just have one.
Fibroids can increase in size, decrease in size or even go away with time. They can occur anywhere in the womb and are named according to where they grow:
• Intramural fibroids - these grow within the muscle tissue of the womb. This is the most common place for fibroids to form.
• Subserous fibroids - these grow from the outside wall of the uterus (womb) into the pelvis.
• Submucous fibroids - subserosal fibroids grow from the inner wall into the cavity of the uterus.
• Pedunculated fibroids - these grow from the wall of the uterus and are attached to it by a narrow stalk.
Most women who have fibroids are not aware that they have them as they do not have any symptoms. Sometimes one is found during a routine examination (pelvic examination) by a doctor or by chance during a scan which you may have for another reason. Symptoms may include:
• Heavy or more painful periods
• Bloating or swelling
• Bladder or bowel symptoms
• Pain during sexual in*******se
• Miscarriage or infertility
• Problems during pregnancy
However, fibroids can be associated with an increased risk of having a caesarean section, the baby lying bottom-first rather than head-first (breech) and early labour. Your doctor will advise you further if you are pregnant and have fibroids.
If your fibroids are not causing any symptoms they do not usually require treatment. Many women choose not to have treatment if they have symptoms that are not too bad. After the menopause, fibroids often shrink and symptoms tend to go or ease.
