Contemporary Art Gallery Space in Napier hosting revolving exhibitions from a selection of top artists and galleries in Aotearoa.
Currently on show in our upstairs gallery exhibition 'The Figurative Collective,' Delicia Sampero's artwork hangs alongside Gary Waldrom, Andy Leleisi’uao, and Richard Boyd-Dunlop. Delicia is a painter and installation artist whose training and inspiration are informed by her upbringing, her tri-cultural family (Germany, New Zealand and Samoa), travel, creative friends and her interests in dance, spirituality and ecology.
As part of The Figurative Collective Sampero presents a series of works titled In the Flow. In the Flow, features reimagined and repurposed traffic signs assembled into larger configurations. These artworks, are not intended to convey specific symbolism or narratives, are instead designed to act as focal points for contemplation during the viewer's personal journey.
Drawing from themes of regeneration, memory, community, and the interconnectivity of various elements, Sampero's paintings prompt exploration of diverse concepts such as bodily connections, cultural dichotomies, and the concept of space between entities. Through this artistic journey, viewers are encouraged to reflect on their own thoughts, emotions, and discussions prompted by the intersection of these visual cues with their individual experiences.

▸ GARY WALDROM
Magic Carpet over Patangata, 2024

1220 x 1820 mm
Paintings by Gary Waldrom hang in our upstairs gallery in our current exhibition 'The Figurative Collective'. Gary, born in 1953 is a self taught artist, he has cultivated a distinctive style that has earned him recognition in various prestigious art competitions since the 1970s. His engaging paintings often raise enigmatic questions about the characters depicted, hinting at personal narratives or hidden agendas. Waldrom's figures with their knowing expressions and obstructed backgrounds exude a sense of mystery and isolation, capturing the viewer's fascination with their quirky visual appeal.
Gary’s paintings are held in private and public collections such as The James Wallace Trust, Rutherford Trust Collection, Hawkes Bay Museum and Art Gallery, Helene Quilter Collection (housed at Govett-Brewster) Wingnut Films and with many others.

These artists with different perceptions, sensibilities and interpretations have developed distinctive visual languages over many years of their work. Four culturally diverse artists portray the human form and face in ways which are deeply connected, but not confined to their own experience and heritage. Their creations refer to aspects of the human condition rather than expressing personal narratives.

Part of The Figurative Collective, opening this Friday in our upstairs gallery at Boyd-Dunlop Gallery, presents the work of Aotearoa-born Pasifika artist Andy Leleisi'uao.
Exploring themes of cultural identity and societal issues through figurative work, Andy overlays these silhouettes with repeating symbols such as puzzle pieces and shapes, creating a two-dimensional world composed in a way like mechanical gears.
Andy Leleisi'uao has exhibited widely across New Zealand and internationally, with work featured in permanent collections such as Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, Te Papa Tongarewa and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, and more.

The Figurative Collective exhibition opening next week on Friday 8 March, 5-7pm.
New and selected works by Gary Waldrom, Andy Leleisi’uao, Delicia Sampero, and Richard Boyd-Dunlop
The Figurative Collective could be considered a group of painting activists with mutual respect for each other’s work, exploring ways of sharing their raison d'être.
As they report on how they see the world the artists raise questions through their works. Exploring crises, controversy, and extremes whilst simultaneously exploring beauty, magic, and wonder. The large scale visually captivating creations will invite audiences to connect with the artwork on a deeper level prompting introspection and dialogue. Responses to the work may be beautiful, disturbing, terrible, mystical, transcendental, humorous and fantastical.
'Eclipse' is still on show in our upstairs gallery, showcasing the works of artists such as Robin White, Philip Clairmont, Max Gimblett, Allen Maddox, Seung Yul Oh, Rohan Wealleans, Peter Madden, Hye Rim Lee, Sefton Ravi, Marcus Hipa, Dagmar Dyck, Kirk Nicholls and more.

In the visual conversation, vivid images capture the abrasiveness of learning a new language and culture in a foreign land. Struggling faces reflect the challenges, while cultural symbols emphasise the complexity. Yet, amidst the abrasiveness, there's a subtle beauty in the resilience and determination of those navigating this intricate assimilation journey.

This artwork is associated with the resurgence of expressionist painting in New Zealand in the 1970s and 1980s. Along with friends Allen Maddox and Tony Fomison, Clairmont was a central figure in this movement, adapting the vivid colours and exaggerated brushstrokes of early twentieth-century German expressionism to embody his frustrations with the bourgeois establishment.

1530 x 880 mm
In this works Nicholls takes objects which have briefly served a purpose and been discarded, outdated tech, old tools, and tiny monuments and blends them with other objects he has created. These artifacts loop around the mirror like animation on a strip of film. An interplay between high and low culture. The dancing figures, sourced from an old sketchbook by the esteemed Dutch Master Peter Paul Rubens, depict peasants celebrating a harvest. The intimate and innocent nature of the dance highlights our role as passive observers in a world that is rapidly evolving.
