Napier Harriers Memorial Road Race
(Sponsor - Placemakers)
This coming Saturday is the Memorial Road Race.
This event has been run annually as a memorial for five young Napier Harrier’s club members - Michael Blundell (aged 15), John Dolbel (16), Ronald Gibbons (19), Robert Kingi (20) & William Hughes (21) - who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in 1967. They were returning from representing the club at the Wairoa to Gisborne road relay race.
There are some exciting changes for this year’s event:
Full Distance: Half marathon (21.1 km)!
2 person relay: 2 x 10.55 km
4 person relay: 4 x 5.275 km
Event start time 10.00 am!
This year, due to the shorter distance, the 4 x person relay will also be open to the young guns
in the under 14 years age category!
The course starts on the grass area by Perfume Point and follows the walkway out towards Awatoto, to the turn around point 10.55km out.
There will be the relay changeover points at the 5.275 km, 10.55 km and 15.825 km locations (same location as the 5.275 km changeover).
Prize giving will be at East Pier, after the event.
There will be prize money for the first three places in each category.
Event is open to all (ages 14 and over for full distance and 2 x person relay).

Our Story
The Napier Harrier Club was founded in 1934 and is a family orientated club with over 100 members ranging in age from 7 to 70 and caters for runners of all abilities from beginners to Nationally ranked speedsters.
During 1984 the club joined Greendale Tennis and Taradale Cricket to form the Taradale Sports Association. Together we built new clubrooms in Taradale Park, with vehicular access off Symons Lane in Taradale, Napier. This wonderful facility includes changing rooms with excellent showers, a kitchen and a licenced bar and is the focal point of most of our activities. Our post race afternoon teas are legendary!
The club holds oganised runs every Saturday from April to October, rain hail or shine. We usually assemble at the clubrooms or the race venue at 1.45pm and begin action at 2pm. Every Saturday through the season involves either a race or a 'Group Run'. The first half of the season consists of mainly cross country or off road races. The latter part of the season is mainly road races. The courses are many and varied, and generally no two events will be over the same terrain in the season. 'Pack Runs' are low key training runs where runners of similar ability group together to go out for a training run.
