Friday Reflections💫

While cleaning this morning, I stumbled across some old business cards, and it made me reflect on how far we’ve come. From the humble beginnings of a work-from-home studio to the calming, knowledge-filled space we thrive in today, it’s been an incredible journey.

We are beyond grateful for the support of our wonderful clients and the endless support of those who have joined us over the years. Your trust has allowed us to grow into the practice we are today, allowing our passion to meet its purpose in delivering exceptional physiotherapy care. Man are we lucky to work with such inspiring, caring people🙏

As we look ahead to 2025, we’re excited to bring you even bigger and better things. A special thank you to for the brand redesign last year—your focus on keeping things clear, simple, and professional has helped us identify what we represent 🌱

Here’s to continued growth, learning, and helping our community move better🤸🏼

Our Engaging Physio’s are keen to know more. They are always learning to bring you new exciting research to implement in their practice. Here are some courses which we are completing over the next 6 months:
co_ female athlete course. This course was packed full of info on how puberty impacts young female athletes, helping them with training, performance, recovery, nutrition and sports psychology . Well done to Julia and the team on putting together all of this vital information that will be a real guidebook for coaches in the future.

Zebras – exploring the presentation and diagnosis of ehlers Danlos syndrome EDS, mast syndrome cell activation syndrome MCAS, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome POTS 🧠

Core exercise solutions- we are just diving into this incredible course🤩 As women health physios we want to specialise in pre-and postnatal exercise. We’re just starting this course and it is full of exciting research and evidence in women’s health that were excited to bring into practice and into our classes💞

Fibromyalgia💫

Is a common chronic condition that causes widespread pain, fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. We think the disorder is related to increase pain that is driven by the signals in the brain and spinal cord. Sleep disturbances and “fibro fog” or trouble focusing are also commonly found.

It is unsure what can set off Fibro but it has an increased occurrence after physical trauma, surgery, infections or physiological stress.

it affects 2 to 4% of people according to the American College of rheumatology. Fibromyalgia sufferers are also prone to other conditions like tension headaches, TMJ disorders, depression and anxiety.

It can be hard to diagnose as it is often a process of elimination. After seeing your GP, ruling out other inflammatory/neurological conditions via bloods and testing, then we look at the body as a whole.

Are you having widespread dull constant pain for at least three months? Are there multiple sites of pain including an area in the upper body (i.e. shoulders arms) lower body (i.e. legs knees hips) and trunk. And these pains can’t be explained by previous/current injuries or physical trauma to the area? It is often a very confusing & complex presentation that needs experienced knowledge to diagnose.

There is no cure for Fibro but there are ways to reduce the pain. Soft tissue release like stretching, relaxation and massage are helpful. Regular low impact movement like Pilates and walking, Accupuncture and in most cases medical management should be advised.

Is there a condition that you are interested in? Flick us a DM and we’ll write about it next week!

Pilates is more than just a workout; it’s a journey towards a healthier, stronger, and more balanced body and mind. We love Pilates because it offers a range of goodness, with mobility, flexibility, and strengthening exercises at the centre to target those crucial supporting muscles we often focus on in our Physio practice. This makes Pilates an ideal complement to your rehabilitation routine, seamlessly integrating many of the exercises prescribed in rehab into our classes. Not only does this keep your rehab interesting and motivating, but it also ensures you’re working on the right areas to aid in your recovery ❤️‍🩹.

We’ve recently done some further training in Elhers Danos Syndrome (EDS). We often see clients with hypermobility or connective tissue disorders, & Pilates can be one option to help build joint awareness & stability🤸🏼

EDS are a group of 13 heritable connective tissue disorders. The conditions are caused by genetic changes that affect connective tissue. Each type of EDS has its own set of features with distinct diagnostic criteria. Most common features are joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility.

Hypermobile EDS (hEDS) is the most common type of EDS by far. hEDS accounts for about 90% of EDS cases and is thought to affect at least 1 in 3,100-5,000 people.

What causes EDS?
Each type of EDS is caused by variants in specific genes that provide the instructions for making collagens. This therefore affects all connective tissue throughout the body. Connective tissue provides support, protection, and structure to our body & is a vital part of our make up. So while most think of this condition as being hypermobile through your joints, it has a very systemic effect- as you can see in our slides.

Can EDS be inherited?
The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes can be passed on from parent to child. Each type of EDS is inherited in either a dominant or recessive inheritance pattern.

What are the signs and symptoms of EDS?
Each type of EDS is associated with different symptoms and characteristics. Some symptoms are common across all types of EDS, such as joint hypermobility, pain, and fatigue. Other symptoms are only observed in specific types of EDS. Even within the same type of EDS, people can experience very different symptoms from each other.

How is EDS managed?
There are no disease-specific treatments for any type of EDS, so EDS is managed by addressing each person’s symptoms as they can be so varied. EDS often require multiple providers in different specialties to manage their care. Even within the same type of EDS, two people may have very different symptoms and respond differently to different management strategies. Each person should work with their care team to develop a care plan that meets their individual needs.

Breast Cancer

A topic very relevant this month with everyone hosting pink ribbon breakfasts & raising money for the wonderful breast cancer foundation💞

But let’s not forget the meaning behind these networking events. 1 in 5 women will get cancer in their lives. It would be naive to think it won’t happen to your loved ones or heaven forbid yourself.

I personally have a very dear friend with it, she is only 37. She was about to have the most beautiful baby girl when she was diagnosed, only to have that joy ripped out from underneath her & head face first into the battles of cancer with a newborn💞

We’ve seen many many courageous, strong, beautiful women suffer through similar stories. We’ve been with them through the surgeries, chemo, radiation & all of the after effects. We are in awe of these incredible people who fight to get back to what they enjoy in life, battle hardened & scarred.

Please give generously this month for the wonderful support the breast cancer foundation offer these women, because that is what pink ribbon breakfasts are for💞

Natalia is our superstar Physio🤩 Not only is she a skilled musculoskeletal Physio, she also has a keen interest in Pelvic Health💞

She’s perfected her skills in treatment around the pelvis- with study at the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute in the US. She has also done further study locally through Dr Melissa Davidson in Pelvic Health here in NZ. She has some super skills in this much needed field of Physiotherapy. She is also certified in dry needling & knows her way around many pelvic health issues including:

• pelvic floor training & internal examination
• prolapse management
• Abdominal separation rehabilitation
• pain specific to the lower back, pelvis, SI joints, tailbone & hips (she’s also a whizz with heaps of experience with hip labral tears & surgery🙌)

Natalia is eager to work with anyone with these concerns & encourages practical habits for long term pelvic health You don’t have to be pregnant or early post natal to need these services & she encourages women of any age to address these matters, it’s never too late💞

Natalia is also skilled in Clinical Pilates (is there anything she can’t do!) & loves incorporating pelvic floor & core training in our Reformer Studio. See her 1:1 for a private/ACC treatment or join her Classes- whether it’s Beginners Reformer or Pre & Post Natal Courses we also run.
