Some lovely feedback we recently received - I'm so lucky to have such an experienced team! "Hi Nikki, just wanted to provide feedback on your team given recent injuries. Really enjoyed working with Mark for my calves given Hannah was not available. Managed to get squeezed in today after injuring Quad last night. Josh was amazing, enjoyed his explanation of how my leg worked and likely how the grade1 to 2 tear occurred. Gave me a great plan for next four weeks while I am in the South Island. It is a bit of a treck for me to come to.the clinic as I work remotely at home. Worth the trip, every time. Thanks, love working with you and your team"

Have you ever wondered what shockwave therapy is and whether it would be beneficial for your achilles injury? A recent study has shown that shockwave therapy is beneficial for mid-tendon achilles tendinopathy, alongside a tendon-loading exercise program. While there are many things that can help achilles pain, it is good to know that there is another tool in the toolbox when treating these conditions. Source: Sports Medicine 2022

A recent study has supported physiotherapy as soon as possible after an ankle sprain. The quicker you get to physiotherapy after spraining your ankle, the lower the risk is of injury recurrence. The likelihood of ankle sprain recurrence increased for each day that rehabilitation was not provided in the first week from injury. If you want to stay injury-free in the future, seek help as soon as possible after injury rather than adopting the wait-and-see approach! Source: JOSPT 2021.

Approximately one third of women recovering from non-reconstructive breast cancer surgery experience adverse effects following surgery, such as restricted shoulder range of motion, pain and lymphoedema. Physiotherapy and exercise prescription has been shown to be more effective than usual care alone (information leaflets) in women at the one year mark post-surgery (Source: British Medical Journal Nov 2021). It is vital that women receive physiotherapy post-surgery to prevent these adverse effects of surgery, improve their long-term health and quality of life. At the clinic Nikki is qualified to help these women, so please spread the word that help is available!

We all know someone who has experienced Achilles pain, or has 'snapped' their Achilles. The cause of Achilles pain is usually due to the changes to the collagen structure of the tendon and is often related to a recent change in load (eg. walking/running more during lockdowns!). Usually specific exercises and manual therapy will resolve symptoms, but it is important to ascertain the specific cause of every patient's Achilles pain. Exercises you may find by trying to self-diagnose/self-treat online can make certain conditions worse, so a professional diagnosis is essential. There are other structures such as the retrocalcaneal bursa (sac of fluid around the heel), paratenon (sheath around the tendon), ankle joint, fat pad, sural nerve and smaller accessory calf muscles which may be the cause of pain. The specific treatments and exercises for these differ from each other and it is important to be doing the right exercises for your condition. So if you have been struggling away with persistent achilles pain, come and see one of our physios for a thorough diagnosis and treatment plan.

Meet the Team - Lucy Marsh - Receptionist

Who are you and what is your role at the clinic?
I was born on the North Shore and I have just finished my last year of school at Takapuna Grammar. I have been receiving physio treatment over the years due to my active lifestyle which then led me to becoming one of the receptionists at the clinic.

What do you love about living and working on the North Shore?
I love living in such a friendly community with almost everything you need just down the road.

What do you most enjoy about working at the clinic?
I really love seeing so many friendly faces walk into the clinic, and watching patients gain back the ability to live life as they'd like to without the pain of an injury.

What are your favourite ways to keep active?
I am a horse rider and my favourite pastime is to ride and compete with my horse Whisp while spending lots of time out in the fresh country air. I love going for walks and the occasional run or workout here and there when I'm not riding.

Do you know someone with a long-term health condition? Are they concerned about the risks associated with exercise? A recent study shows that the benefits of exercise far outweigh the risks, and that exercise plays an important role in the management and prevention of many long-term conditions. Educating people who are fearful of exercise that it is safe and beneficial for their long-term health will help to support them to make behavioural changes that could improve their quality of life. Meet the team - Physiotherapist Hannah Dawson:

Who are you and what do you do?

I was born and raised on the North Shore. I had a few significant injuries through high school whilst playing competitive football which meant I spent a fair bit of time at the Physiotherapist and led me to become interested in Physiotherapy as a career.

What do you love about living and working on the North Shore?

I love how close we are to everything living on the Shore. We have amazing bushwalks, beautiful beaches and lovely café’s all within a short distance.

What are you most passionate about in your career?

I love working with people to achieve their goals whether it be to return to high level sports or pain free work/activities of daily living. It is amazing to see people achieve their goals and gain their quality of life back after an injury.

What are your favourite ways to keep active?

Back in my hay day I used to love playing football and hockey however post kids my priorities have changed. I now enjoy spending time outside with the kids kicking a ball around, going for a bike ride or jumping on the tramp. I also try to squeeze in a home workout when I can.
