It’s been on my mind A LOT over the past few months and honestly, the time is absolutely right for me to close down Tend Wellbeing. I’ll be closing the site down on 1 May 2023.

It’s been an amazing journey and I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported and purchased journals. Honestly, I know it sounds cheesy but I’m excited to see what comes next in my life.

Kia ora! Oh gosh it’s been a loooooong time since I did anything on here - practically forgotten how to use it 😉

I took some time to regroup and focus on my own well-being after what was a bit of an insane year. An insane year that included ending my relationship, moving into my own place, coming out as le***an (at the ripe old age of 36) and falling in love. It’s been a rollercoaster!

Through all of that, the focus on my wellbeing has been paramount. Been able to ground myself in the methodology that Tend brings makes it easier to build, and continue, the habits.

And look, it’s not all big stuff! What it looks like for me is prioritising getting a walk in and doing something fun everyday. Two of my favourite habits to do with my son is a five minute yoga session where we choose a pose and try to replicate as best we can. The other is teaching him about mindfulness - as you can see in the picture, we do this anywhere, anytime 😂

Sometimes the algorithm’s manage to give me an article that combines two of my favourite things: our natural environment and wellbeing.

I feel a bit like a broken record but there is nothing better than getting outside, even for five minutes.

But I’ve literally never thought about how the TYPE of tree impacts my mood. I’ve always felt at home in Aotearoa bush - the low ferns, the tall natives, the slightly damp smell there usually is. it’s home. 💞

You know when you're MEANT to be doing something but can't quite figure out what it is? I feel like I've had that this entire damn year. It's been a year of massive shifts and changes, and oof, my brain and my heart are achy.
Long story short: a lot has happened this year, and it's been challenging.
It's been less about well-being and more about survival. And I reckon that some of you might be feeling that as well.
I'm not going to end this on a pithy note about how looking after yourself is essential or how there's light at the end of the tunnel. Instead, I'm going to end it with this:
You deserve good s**t.
You deserve good s**t.
You deserve good s**t.
You deserve to wake up in the morning and have something to look forward to, even if that's just one second of good in your day. You deserve to feel good about yourself, and you deserve to have the good s**t in your life. And even if you don't get it today, you still deserve good s**t.
So today, go out and do something good for yourself. It doesn't have to be significant. It doesn't have to be life-changing (although, hey, buy a journal ;) ). It's just one small thing that brings you a moment of niceness. We're not even aiming for joy or anything right now, just nice.

Finding the in your day can be a mission and it’s why we always say it can be a SMALL thing.

Every day isn’t gonna be Christmas, every day isn’t even gonna be GOOD but concentrating on finding that one small thing and NOTICING the one small thing can make a huge difference to mindset.

Today? This little corner of my house (cropped to hide the mess 🙃) that features art from my son, a seal that reminds me of my mum, a wall hanging from Portugal and this epic camp flag from that is the last thing I see inside before leaving the house. What a reminder 😉

Since it's so close to the start of April, I thought I'd share one of my favourite parts of the POWER diary... Feel-good moves. ⁠

One of the basic tenets of Tend is that it works to prioritise care over productivity. And so instead of monthly "goals", we think about the things that make us feel good. Start by thinking about how you want to feel at end of the month, and then decide the aligned habits you're going to try and do each day to move closer to your desired feeling. ⁠

F**k, I’m over it. I know that as a well/being business owner, I’m meant to be full of beans and “do this, it’ll change your life” but the truth is, self-care is hard, wellbeing is hard, and doing one thing for yourself won’t fix the bigger social issues in the world.

So why do I keep going? Well, I have a Ted in my life, a whānau who is wonderful and kind and loving and helping me create the different-to-expected whānau I want in my life. And I do, hand on heart, think that if we all figured out OUR best self-care, and OUR best community care, we’d be better for it.

It’s not the BIG stuff like going to Fiji for a week long spa vacation, it’s the little s**t like digging in the dirt for potatoes, it’s making a ridiculous rainbow cake cuz that’s all your kid wants, it’s taking a fliend a biscuit cuz they’re having a rough time and it’s all you can think to do, it’s the first sip of coffee after a rough night’s sleep, it’s the impromptu phone call with your best friend. All of these things are good things and yet we play them down like they’re less than because they’re not the holiday in Fiji.

So find your small thing, do it as much as you can and track it in your tend diary. Don’t kid yourself, self-care is hard. Community care is hard. But when we start small, those small things become big things.

Feeling a bit like a kid on my first day of school as I head into the office for the first time in a LONG time. Between , the protests, a good helping of depression and anxiety it’s been a while since I’ve put on work clothes and actually gone to work.

Got my headphones, my laptop (after Tuesday’s failure to remember it) and of course, my Power diary to help me remember what’s really important: my wellbeing.

Oh gosh it’s been a hot minute!

I’m still here, and Tend is still here for all your well-being journal needs!

Life is HARD at the moment, and I’m in the midst of so many massive life changes that my heart is heavy and my brain is mush.

And look, this is what i say ALL THE TIME: looking after yourself doesn’t mean life is never hard and s**t and impossible to see a light through. What is foes do is give you the routine to fall back on, so when things are s**t, you know that there are quick wins and easy things you can do to show yourself awhi.

To all those just doing it, I’m proud of you. I’m proud of me for getting out of bed this morning and going to work. I’m proud of me for delighting in the most excellent coffee and I’m proud of me for playing aeroplanes with my son for a very long time this weekend.

Self care won’t make you “well” but it sure does help when you’re up against it.

Thinking today about the things we can do to show kindness to the world. This is my Ted, when he was about six months old, helping mama collect for and it’s something I hope is instilled in him as he grows up: that our whānau comes from a place of privilege and that privilege means we must use it to help people who may not be in the same position as us.

So my challenge to you this year is to do good things for people outside your immediate circle. Volunteer, donate, do something kind for other people if you’re able.
