Night Owl Coffee
Mini Batch Roasting
I've gone back to my original beans as the Brazil No13 were not available so:
Peru Norte Fair Trade Organic it is:
Spicy and slightly leathery aroma. The flavour in the cup is clean, bright and fruity, having sweet orange acidity and a slightly smokey or caramalised finish. The body is medium and you're left with a pleasant fruity aftertaste.
2kgs are ready to roast
I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend
☕
I received this email from Lifeline, thought I'd share:
Dear Carl
Thank you for helping to give hope and save lives!
Your gift couldn’t have been timelier. The number of people seeking support from Lifeline’s caring, specially trained counsellors has never been greater. And demand continues to increase.
Every day, hundreds of Kiwis in distress need our help. An average of 15 to 20 people at high risk of su***de or self-harm are supported to safety by a Lifeline counsellor in a day.
You are helping answer every one of these calls for help.
Calls from people’s sons, daughters, parents, whanau, friends…
Your gift is a vital contribution to the sustainability of Lifeline Aotearoa, as we don’t receive any government funding.
Your empathy and compassion for others is appreciated so much.
Did you know?
It’s young people who predominantly use our textline (4357). 90% of texts are sent by those under 30.
People aged between 11 and 15 send almost a quarter of texts.
Thank you again for partnering with us.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch by email or phone.
Warmest regards

So this email is to all of you too, thank you for drinking coffee and supporting ❤️
☕️
New bags, modified slightly, still only 200g but looking awesome
If anyone needs coffee I'm back and I'll still be giving to Lifeline but only $2 from every sale
☕
Today I made a donation to Lifeline for $725
We did it, it is done
Just over 100 bags sold
Thank you to all that bought coffee, to all that added a little extra to your payments, to all that just gave money - you are all truely bloody wonderful
I still have a couple of payments to come in and I still have a couple to deliver but I got excited and topped up the funds and will hopefully deliver most tomorrow 😁
It costs Lifeline roughly $25 per phonecall to help someone that really needs it so with our donation we've helped roughly 29 people
I'm so happy
29 people in need of help whatever their situation will get their call answered, it is only a small drip in a very big bucket but all drips help
Today is a good day 🙂
Thank you, thank you, thank you
I am so proud of us, what a team ❤️
Update: all gone thank you everyone! 🙂
Team
I have 4 x 200g bags and 2 x 500g bags to go
These are extra bags so they don't have the Night Owl logo on them but the money raised from them will go to Lifeline
Let me know if you're keen before I put it out to a wider audience
These are the very last bags before I tally up and deposit the funds... whoop whoop
We are over $600 don't know if we'll get to seven but we have done so well
Hope your day is going awesomely
☕
I love getting these messages!
Thank you Aryanne ❤️
Quick update: we're still at $600 for Lifeline but I'll get onto roasting a few more bags in L2 to boost that final figure!
I do hope everyone is doing ok 🙂
☕
Well team, things have slowed a little, I hoped to have all money raised and coffee delivered... COVID has put a little dint in our plan.
Once we get over this little hurdle we'll be back into it.
I have done a tally... $585 raised for lifeline.
You all are phenomenal. That's in three weeks!
I'm thinking $700 now but we'll see 🙂 I'm just excited
At the moment all I hope is that everyone is doing ok, please reach out if not as again it's a crazy time
❤️
Carl
We did it!
All bags sold (and a couple more 😉) I could try to get to $600 with the spare bags I have here
Should I?
I will finish making the final bags up and then do a tally
Watch this space!
We did it! 😍
Thank you Steve for the love
Feel good Sunday
❤️
Team we have 17 bags to sell...
I'm so happy, we have sold 83 bags of coffee
That's over $400 for Lifeline
If you need another fix, let me know otherwise I'll post tomorrow, down other avenues.
Have an awesome weekend all
☕🙂
Today's beans are being roasted by heat and the smooth sounds of Mr Bowie 📻
We are on the home stretch so close 🙂
I hope everyone is having a wonderful morning
☕
Ok team, I'm about 60 bags done with still more being roasted and if you haven't received yours yet, they're coming
I was working out some numbers:
60 x 200g bags is 12kg of beans so far
Each 200g bag takes 30 minutes to make so it's taken me 30 hours so far and I will end up doing 50 hours of love when this is finished
It costs Lifeline approximately $25 per call so once finished with our goal of $500 - 20 people will benefit from our support ❤️
Again thank you to all that have purchased so far, you are apart of something amazing
Below is the Night Owl Kitchen, where all the action happens
Just a little update for those still waiting:
The method of my madness is trying get groups/similar areas done first so it's easier for delivery
Thought I'd better let you know. Also I've just ordered 10kgs of more beans so lookout
Thank you for your patience and hope you're all having a wonderful day
☕
While I'm waiting for beans I thought I'd let you know a little bit about the ones some of you are about to try:
Spicy and slightly leathery aroma. The flavour in the cup is clean, bright and fruity, having sweet orange acidity and a slightly smokey or caramalised finish. The body is medium and you're left with a pleasant fruity aftertaste.
That's what was written on the website but yip with trying it from a percolator, plunger, and expresso point of view it's light and smokey it's a great gateway coffee. Good for starters, the old caffeine gulpers will think it's maybe a bit soft/smooth. Making it a dark roast didn't do it any favours so a good mostly medium to dark was where I found it settled.
All 'n' all you shouldn't find anything wrong with this bean but maybe wanting a stronger kick if you're an ol' coffee hand
Funny story there was no more of this bean for me to top up so I purchased another one called Brazil O'coffee it's a fair trade bean and it's overview says:
Chocolate, caramel and strawberry. Velvety body with a pleasant long aftertaste.
Sounds yum, I can't wait to taste
All righty then, well in two days I've whipped up 24 bags of coffee.
So that's $120 already for Lifeline
I have another 50 bags to do, and I ran outta beans sorry team I had no idea you would all be that wonderful and go crazy for this idea 😊
Did you know couriers that pickup coffee beans have to be some of the fastest couriers I've ever dealt with. They know coffee people need coffee! Seriously though they're quick.
Anyway just an update post and to say again, thank you ☕
Roasting beans and watchin' Olympics
New beans have arrived so getting my first orders done.
My goal 100 bags sold resulting in $500 for Lifeline - we're at 10 bags sold! Whoop!
☕
My goal was and is just roasting coffee
When I made my first cup of Expresso back in BBs Coffee and Bake Dunedin located in the Warehouse I was hooked on this coffee buzz and I always wondered what it would be like to roast coffee beans
Fast forward 20 odd years and I bought a little roaster funnily enough developed and mastered down in Dunedin
I really enjoy creating... art, coffee, anything so coming up with a name, doing the logo was the best, seriously love that side of things
All I thought I wanted to do was make enough to payback my roaster then whatever happens, happens. The goal was to roast coffee, the plan was to make the money back for my roaster. Easy
But my plan has changed, it has changed to something I can feel good about and you the customer can love too
I have had made up 100 compostable Night Owl 200g bags and if I can sell all of these at $10 each with my Peru Norte beans I can raise $500 for Lifeline, that is all the profit to a team of volunteers that do a great job, day and night
I want to give back and I'd love for you to help me
I can not compete with the prices of coffee at the big supermarkets but I can compete with feel good
If you'd like a bag or seven let me know and as I'm small there might be a little wait but it'll be worth it
If you live in another post code, I can send but there will be a courier fee so add that in to your pricings
Any other questions just ask and I'll try to answer but it is a simple task, sell 100 bags make $500 for Lifeline
Thank you
Carl

Whiskey Infused Beans
They've been infusing for four days now
The smell is strong
The beans were a little soft with adding liquid to them so took a bit longer to grind.
I don't know if this is the route I want to go down, infusing, but it is always fun trying.
I do have 200g of the infused beans leftover so if anyone is just thinking bu**er it I want them, they're ready to buy. 😁
I'm about to percolate the grind I am holding in the picture. I'll let you know what I think.
☕
Looky looky what's just arrived...
Night Owl Coffee 200g bags are ready to go
They're compostable (except for the valve on the back) and I think they look great
☕
It is quite dark, strong flavour. Very nice after taste - Bruce
First review, simple and straight to the point
Bruce had whole beans and mentioned the strong dark roast of them and thinking a medium roast would be better suited
My work colleague thought the same with a plunger grind and I have to agree with my percolator trial
The after taste is something we all agreed on too
The Peru beans are suited to medium to dark roast so we're getting there
☕
Update: Salted Caramel infusing first trial - failed
But I'm having so much fun failing/learning so let's go second trial soon, I'll keep you posted
Hope you're all having a good day
Thought I'd make some salted caramel infused coffee today.

That above is the description of the beans that I'm roasting at the moment
I have roasted my first 200g bag and sent it off to Chch (thank you Bruce)
They were dark roasted and dang my house smelt good (Dee might have other words)
I took some plunger roast to my work and we all stood around the plunger, taking turns at having a sip, you know testing the brew, taking notes... and success, the one word used most - smooth.
People were surprised and that brought a smile
I'm happy
I got this great old school 1940s Coffee Percolator from my father in law and I love making a brew in it.
Here's a view of the lid showing my first cuppa joe brewing.
It was wonderful but I would say that 😁
☕
A little look at my first Night Owl freshly roasted beans.
I'm having a cuppa now...
First roasting
My beans arrived today
Dee is picking up the the burr style grinder now
It's all systems go
Printed 200g bags will take a few more days
