Our Young Virtuosi are opening their programme with Giuseppe Tartini's Sonata in G minor – known as the 'Devil's Trill Sonata'.
“The origins of this virtuosic sonata are rather ominous; the Devil himself appeared in a dream, alleged Tartini. In exchange for his soul, the Devil served the composer’s every desire, including playing his violin – the music that sprang forth was so beautiful, Tartini awoke and immediately tried to recreate the notes down on paper”.

“Elegiac, ethereal, and urgent, Muriwai carry the message for our times. Conduits for the instruments and voices of the atua, their work is a journey from the source towards the future we must urgently protect. This is both balm for the soul and a rousing call to action” – Jacquie Boer

‘The Big I’ takes a fresh approach to music-making by people living with intellectual disabilities. Standing apart from other group participation or therapy models, the programme is mana-enhancing and encourages participants to create their own work. The ‘I’ stands for improvisation and also refers to the empowering personal pronoun. Participants learn to express and extend their own musical voices, and to improvise alongside mainstream music students and professional musicians.
‘The Big I’ provides meaningful opportunities for collaboration between students with disabilities and students from the mainstream, and creates a space for these student groups to learn more about one another and to become creative partners.
This week we’re excited to roll out ‘The Big I’ in Blenheim for the first time, and in 2025, it will be coming to Greymouth, Gisborne, Wellington, Palmerston North, and New Plymouth.
CMNZ is grateful for the support of the IHC Foundation in delivering ‘The Big I’ across the motu.
