Unboxed Theatre

A Wellington based feminist collective dedicated to promoting equality for all genders, sexes and sexualities.

25/04/2015

Would you like to attend a Well-Being Through Creativity workshop and help two of your fellow Unboxeders prepare for their jaunt to the Nelson festival? Julia Campbell and Kaly Newman will be facilitating a creative-expressive therapy workshop on Sunday May 3rd.

The workshop will touch upon self-awareness, self-esteem, and body confidence. It will be a relaxed and informal session, and would be a great chance for the community of Unboxed to meet up, have fun exploring, and break some bread together.

When: 1-4pm, Sunday 3rd May
Where: 128 Abel Smith Street.

We'd love you to come! If you intend to, please contact Julia or Kaly or comment below!

Mis{s}Conception - the Bats Edition 07/09/2014
Mis{s}conception Wellington Fringe Festival 2014 03/08/2014

In February 2014 The Clitlective presented Rosaleen Moxey and Ania Upstill's play "Mis{s}conception" for Wellington's Fringe Festival.

The play is a new work about the challenges of infertility in modern times. Based on a true story, the play follows Chloe, a successful twenty-something whose life has gone perfectly to plan until she tries to get pregnant. Offering a humorous but empathetic insight into pregnancy in modern times, Mis{s}Conception follows the story of one woman's attempts to get pregnant, trying anything that might help – including even ph***ic fertility statues.

This project explored the problem of infertility in modern times, an increasingly pertinent issue for women as many choose to have children later and often face difficulties as a result. The topic of infertility was particularly relevant for co-writer and performer Ania Upstill, herself the product of In Vitro Fertilisation in its early days in the late 1980s. Says Upstill, “My mother had a very successful career and was ahead of her time in many ways, including the choice to have children in her late 30's. Only in recent years have I realised how much work my parents had to go through to have my sister and I, and that those difficulties are increasingly becoming the norm. Infertility can be a highly fraught, leaving women feeling vulnerable and incapable even though they are successful in other areas of their life. I hope that this play helps facilitate discussions about infertility and lessen the shame associated with it.”

Mis{s}Conception offered a sympathetic look at infertility and conception through Chloe's experiences. Will she or won't she? Or will she just go crazy trying?

Performances were held at 128 Abel Smith St for koha entry. Despite the heat, we packed out!

The Clitlective defines "feminism" as the means to achieve equality of all genders, and the right of everyone to express their gender as they see fit.

This video does not purpose the degradation of other women's va**na - it is a satirical project aiming to highlight the absurdity of "my p***s is bigger than your p***s" type references in popular culture. In doing so, it hopes to encourage gender pride, regardless of your biological "bits"!

Although this video project focuses on the va**na, we do not exclude self-identified women of any capacity, or any other gender, from sharing in our empowerment.

"Innocence is not doing. Not running off to New York. Not drinking whiskey till 4 AM. Not fu***ng that boy or girl because they make your heart scream electric, then waking up unpunished the next day. Not hacking a system rigged against you. Innocence is a relic of a time when women had the same legal status as children. Innocence is beneficial to your owner. It benefits you not at all."
- Molly Crabapple, 'On Turning 30'

I 'enjoy' the refreshingly (from Stuff!) snarky pro-feminist tone of this article about a hypocritical 'domestic goddess' mogul.

“Yes, my consuming desire is to mingle with road crews, sailors and soldiers, barroom regulars—to be a part of a scene, anonymous, listening, recording—all this is spoiled by the fact that I am a girl, a female always supposedly in danger of assault and battery... Bit of a long article, but some fascinating stuff here about the problems inherent in individualist-focused 'Lean In' feminism, as well as an interesting look at the 'mill girl' strikes at the centre of the early 20th century women's labour movement.
