I had an amazing time reconnecting with colleagues and friends at Neuropuncture’s Neurodegenerative Disease workshop in Wellington this weekend. The sessions on Long Covid, Functional Neurological Disorders (FND), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and Parkinson's Disease (PD) were incredible insightful.
I’ve learned so much and can’t wait to start applying these evidence-based treatment protocols in my clinic.

What Is Bone Broth? A Nutritionist Explains Bone Broth Health Benefits 31/05/2022

Interesting read.

Professor Jerilynn Prior Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research (who helped me with both books) has studied the pill in teenagers and found it causes "significant and clinically important" bone loss.

That's a problem because our teen years are when we're supposed to build bone to reach "peak bone density" by around age 25. A healthy peak bone density or peak bone mass is important for reducing the future, long-term risk of osteoporosis.

In a recent letter to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Prof Prior and her colleagues reiterate this concern and provide a helpful literature review.

Read: "The pill suppresses adolescent bone growth, no matter the estrogen dose." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC8687508/

Seeing a lot of people with Migraine, that’s a very good advice.

Repeat after me- Migraine is NEVER your fault.
Migraine is a genetic neurological disease. It’s not a personality flaw. It’s not a punishment. It’s not your fault.

Triggers are not causes. The definition of a trigger is anything that, upon exposure to or withdrawal from that substance or condition, can contribute to instigating a migraine attack. But the cause of migraine is genetics.

Each person has a unique trigger profile, which frequently changes over time. We can so easily get caught up in “trigger tyranny'', where so much joy is taken from our lives by trying to avoid every single potential trigger. And then comes the guilt when we end up experiencing a migraine attack anyway. What did I do wrong? I shouldn’t have done this activity. I was just asking for a migraine attack by doing that. I don’t deserve happiness in life because I know I’ll be punished with a migraine attack.

Dr. Tine Poole of Norway puts it perfectly when she stated, “Migraine lives its own life. You can have some triggers and you can avoid the triggers, but sometimes you just get a [migraine attack] anyway. So don’t fall into the pitfall of blaming yourself for it. It’s not your fault. It’s a brain disorder.”

Identifying your triggers can be an empowering way to help manage your migraine. But when it starts to dominate your life, take a step back. Remind yourself that you are never to blame. You deserve to enjoy life, even when dealing with such debilitating chronic pain. What are your tips for working through the guilt of migraine?

With more and more people presenting with Anxiety in clinic good to see some evidence based research.

Evidence Based Summaries: Acupuncture as a Therapeutic Treatment for Anxiety
🔗 https://www.evidencebasedacupuncture.org/acupuncture-anxiety/

👉 it is exciting to know that studies show has an effect on both the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS).

✅ - has been shown to improve the body’s ability to cope with stress through improving Heart Rate Variability (HRV).

😡 When the body is under stress, an area of the brain called the hypothalamus releases neurochemicals, and research shows that acupuncture can calm this response 🎯

🥰 Acupuncture has also been shown to increase the release of endorphins, the body’s own ‘feel-good’ chemicals, which play an important role in the regulation of physical and emotional stress responses such as pain, heart rate, blood pressure, and digestive function.

🙌 All of these acupuncture mechanisms have a direct effect on reducing anxiety 👍

Please visit the website for the full evidence summary and feel free to share! Thank you for your support and donations - it helps us to continue producing educational materials for the community 👏👏👏

How have you been talking to yourself lately?

Self-talk is your internal dialogue or inner voice. It’s the running commentary in the background; the script that you use to frame your life. It can be both positive and negative, and you may naturally lean towards more of one or the other. Your self-talk can have a big influence on how you feel about yourself.

If you’re more on the pessimistic side, the good news is that you can learn to shift that inner dialogue to be more supportive and affirming. Emphasising positive self-talk can lead to greater wellbeing, helping you to cope better with challenges, reducing the effects of stress and anxiety. These tips might help:

🔎 Begin by recognising your negative thinking. Identify where you commonly fall into negative self-talk traps and anticipate and prepare for these with a more positive reframe.
👏 Give yourself positive affirmations that help you feel supported and empowered. Perhaps practise mantras in the mirror. Be your own cheerleader.
🥰 Surround yourself with positive people, remembering that you can absorb the outlook and emotions of the people around you.
🌟 Check in with yourself during the day. Would you speak the way that you are talking to yourself, to a friend or family member?

Self-talk is a habit made over a lifetime. And forming a new habit takes practise. But over time, your thoughts can shift, and positive self-talk can become your norm. 💖
