Sink your teeth into this thrilling competition between the Auckland and Otago medical schools… which school can rack up the most blood donations to NZ Blood between September 30th and October 18th?? The winner of this ghoulishly good blood drive showdown will take the prized NZMSA Vampire Cup to their home campus for the next year.
Whether it’s whole blood or plasma, we invite you, your whānau, and your friends to become real-life heroes by donating blood - each precious drop goes towards saving lives of our community members and patients. We know that not everyone may be eligible to donate - but you can still get out there and encourage those around you to donate for a good cause!
Make sure to log your contribution so that it counts towards your university's total.
How do you do this?
Just log-in or create an account on www.nzblood.co.nz and click ‘Join Team Red’. Enter either “Vampire Cup 2024: Auckland University” or “Vampire Cup 2024: Otago University”. Your donation should be added automatically (contact your local centre if you are having troubles!).
The winner will be revealed on the spookiest night of the year… Halloween! Who will emerge as the ultimate victor in this battle of medical prowess and compassion? It's time to show your fangs, embrace the spirit of giving, and make a difference that counts.
Let the blood flow and may the most benevolent vampires win!

Everyone can be a changemaker – and that includes us students. Learn more about IGNITING change from one of our keynotes, Dr Elizabeth Berryman. Originally trained as a nurse, she returned to university to pursue medicine and became the president of OUMSA and NZMSA. She led the incredible movement to increase the loan caps for medical students, opening the door to more post-graduate tauira. She continues to advocate for clinician well-being with an aim to eliminate bullying in the clinical field through the “Chnnl” app she founded.
It’s equally important that suitable communities are EMPOWERED to make changes: join our lighting talk speakers to discuss how we can do that in the context of climate change, the rainbow space and rural health!
