Nutritional and internal tune

Disrupted sleep, migraines, stomach problems, period problems, energy problems, skin problems, chronic disease, immoveable weight. What is your inflammation problem?

I started my journey with inflammation at 14. After my father dying my whole life turned around. In three days I lived in a new city, I lost the family my father had formed with my step mother including a toddler of a half-brother. Somewhat alienated from my fathers extended family due to disagreements at the funeral. All I had was my mother and her new partner, my dog and a new school, a new city and grief. I was never a popular child and now I was in quite a problematic headspace. I was very alone. My skin for the first time broke out in rashes, my scalp taking on a dermatitis that looked like severe cradle cap and would pus and bleed. Leaving my blazer riddled with terrible dandruff. I threw myself into school and joined everything. Wind band, choir, guitar, clarinet, netball, football, board of trustees rep, even as a strictly non-religious person liturgy committee. I was a great student and by 17 stressing over being the best I started to show signs of Interstitial cystitis. I tried Antibiotics not really understanding the potential longevity of the situation. The problem came back worse within a week. I managed the next three years with sugary cranberry juice and loads of water. I left a law and commerce degree two years in emotionally unable to cope, a symptom I would later discover that was connected to the cystitis.

11th September 2011 was a tragically memorable day for all of us. For me it was a game changer and would ultimately bring me to where I am now. On this day in London I met my first Yoga teacher and Guru. He was also a Naturopath, Osteopath and Acupuncturist. A series of professions I have aligned myself with since. By this time I had also damaged myself more with a series of party drugs and poor eating, plus the cystitis visited every week or every other week. On September 11th My spine was fixed, acupuncture for balance was performed, I had my first colonic, I was initiated into Kriya yoga, I sat with a Pinot Rinpoche and the 12th incarnation of the Gyalwang Drukpa and I properly experienced cold and hot thermogenesis for the first time under the guidance of a master. That at the time was a long hot sauna and long icey plunge. That was my first week in my new life. The combination of these things plus some tips on diet dispelled any symptoms of cystitis for about three months. Then through my own unconscious undoing they came back. This is when the journey became my own. Under advisement I started drinking green juices of broccoli, spinach, parsley and celery with a little lemon if I needed. It was foul but it worked within two days I was up and fabulous again. From this point a I became a sponge absorbing whatever I could about cutting edge nutrition, ayurveda, body work techniques, acupuncture, meditation. Though you can’t really mentally learn meditation. You must practice and fail many times. I developed my intuition, I developed a practice.

Do I still have my Achilles heel? I would be lying if I said no. But it has never been so good or so well managed and I can tell you it gets better and better.

I have helped many clients with their journey; reversed diabetes, seen the remission of crohn’s disease, colitis, psoriatic arthritis, endometriosis, high blood pressure, chronic pain, chronic fatigue and more. I would like to stress that the other person makes or breaks this process. I am only a guide, a catalyst. And there have been people who have only learnt good ways to manage their system. And still I consider this a valuable lesson Trauma is huge factor in all chronic health issues and it takes a lot of courage and dedication to continually challenge the hold our past and our ancestors have on us. It requires a combination of movement, failing at meditation and dedication to a diet that for an extreme health condition will at first require extreme measures.

All DIS-EASE in the body has a strong connection to the stomach, our emotional centre. As we dive into the murky waters of self-discovery we must also start by working stomach health and then branch out into other organs.

To this day I continue to study and learn honing my skills and developing my method. I make no promises beyond this: We can always do better and better than yesterday is always worth it. Because we are worth it. I invite you on the journey.

People who live unconsciously are predictable.

So how do we break old habits? How do we change the life we live? How do we become more conscious. The following article gives my three top tips as a coach to help you change unconscious habits.

As a Holistic Health Coach my clients come to me hoping I can help them implement change. The key understanding here being “help”. With my clients I am a catalyst, a support network and part of the team.

So you want to change? Where do we start. Well we must understand first where you are at. A client of mine never cooked for themselves. Ease of access to eating out and take out and a busy social life meant they could avoid cooking. It also meant they never really learnt how to cook. When you eat foods that are cooked in a restaurant or from a takeout venue the food is laden with table salt and multitubes of poor quality oil and in some cases god knows what else. Least we forget that when a menu of fried delight is presented to us we also have a tendency to pick indulgent foods when we are eating out.

Some of you reading this are probably wondering – what’s the problem? It sounds like a delightful way to live. Well the problem for her was weight, she wanted to lose some. And I saw the longer term problem of inflammation. Inflammation causes chronic disease, lowers your energy, inhibits recovery and lowers your immune system in general. Last time I checked we were in the middle of a pandemic. Perhaps less inflammation and a strong immune system should be a base requirement. This might be worth considering the next time you reach for alcohol during this lockdown.

So the answer to our question: Where is this person at? Is where we begin. They can’t cook; the eat out all the time; and possibly there is a psychological reason they are not driven to eat healthy food. Could be food addiction, could be emotional blocks. At first glance that part remains a question. Now we should remember her focus was to lose weight. But that’s the ultimate goal, first we need a mini goal. She needs to be healthy and she needs to cook. So the first mini goals were set and she started to do the work. There were multiple mini goals along the way and we have reformatted them as we started to uncover the psychological triggers that would derail her progress.

Now you should understand that I believe in living and I love to eat out. I even enjoy my favourite takeaway now and again. But we are looking at undoing bad habits. You don’t give a drug addict a little taste of their chosen hit every week as a “treat” and certainly initially we had to be extreme to retrain the tastebuds and habits. Every now and again I start retraining one of my own bad habits and again I too have to become a little T-total in the practice.

This person has lost over 25kg’s and has changed many things in her life. Is energetic, courageous and forever choosing to question and venture into the great unknown. She is truly one of my inspirations changing her life through conscious decision and a willingness to realise that maybe she doesn’t always see her truth. She makes better choices even when she dines out and is continuing to do the work.

So how could you do this for yourself?

1.SET AN INTENTION
a. Write it down
b. Create reminders of your intention – A wrist band you wear every day. A piece of jewellery to mark your new venture, A reminder on your phones home screen.
c. SET YOURSELF UP TO WIN!!! Set mini goals along the way to the big goal. This is the genius of Elon Musk, the Tessler on the way to Mars.

2. USE DISRUPTERS – Your brain is stupid and it loves a rut. If you want to break it out of the rut you have to shake everything to your core.
a. Catharsis – Sprinting is a great basic catharsis, as are any of the Pranayama or whim hof techniques. One of my favourites is ecstatic dance. Or another favourite jumping in cold water. You can of course be more creative and pick a different thing every week. The idea being that whatever you choose it has to shake you to the point of your brain not being able to think beyond the quake.
b. Meditation – the word mindfulness has been splashed around and perverted in western context. But there is a reason for this. Meditation is the medicine to an unconscious mind. As long as we have habits we have an unawareness as soon as each movement is consciously chosen we have moved life into meditation.
c. A coach or a buddy - Sometimes you need help from someone you respect and trust. Someone who is willing to call you out and who you are willing to listen too. Sometimes this is a good friend – but not often. This is where using a coach, a professional who is familiar with the tricks of the fearful mind becomes helpful.
So get a coach and get challenged

3. CELEBRATE THE WIN - but don’t reward it. The win is the reward.

People who live consciously are spontaneous, each movement in the moment. Creating an ability to alchemise their life into something truly unique.
