“It was awesome to reunite with the incredible students from Te One School this weekend at my home in Lower Hutt! After our first meeting during my visit to Rēkohu | Wharekauri, Chatham Islands in August, it was fantastic to welcome them to “the mainland” while on their “Weka walk” (where they experience life on the mainland before starting boarding school).

“The students’ curiosity and energy never cease to inspire me, and I was thrilled to answer their questions about life as an Ambassador. The group loved the opportunity & left inspired by the Native American & Māori art collection noting the differences & similarity between the indigenous collections.

“It was wonderful to see Hamish Campbell and Carly Lawton again, continuing to lead these bright young minds.

“Our connection through culture, art, and conversation is a reminder of the deep ties between our communities. Kia kaha, Te One!” - U.S. Ambassador Udall 🇺🇸 🇳🇿

Yesterday, Ambassador Udall was welcomed to the Waiwhetū Marae to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the opening of Te Māori: Māori Art from New Zealand Collections at NYC's Metmuseum Arts. There, he heard iwi from across Aotearoa discuss the significance of the exhibit.

As The New York Times put it, Te Māori announced to the world “a race of master builders who gave to what we now call New Zealand a dignity that has certainly not been surpassed by anything the white man bought to the area'.

The celebration of Māori art, culture, history, and language did not stop in New York, but rather reverberated around the world to spring newfound enthusiasm for Māori arts back home in New Zealand.
