THE GIANT OTTER
THE GIANT OTTER
Giant Otters of the weasel family, differ from other otters for living in family groups. It is thought that the Amazonian Black Caiman, is responsible for the otter’s rare social structure. The Black Caiman can grow to 6 meters, and a lonely Giant Otter would quickly become its prey, but as a family, they can defeat even the biggest big Black Caiman.
The intriguing lifestyle of sloths: it spends almost no energy on body movements, and so can live of a food source that wouldn’t give enough nourishment to a more active creature. It eats leaves, which are so hard to digest, that they stay in their stomach for a month or even more. Long enough for the leaves to ferment, producing alcohol. Is that what this grin is all about?

'Record number of fires' in Brazilian rainforest
Do NOT think this fire affects the Amazon alone; the consequences of this forest destruction will land on yóur doorstep too. Wherever you are on our Earth, NOW is the time to take action, let your voice be heard!!
bbc.com Fires in the Amazon have risen 84% amid growing deforestation, Brazil's space research agency says.
The King Vulture is bigger than the other neotropical vultures. Strangely enough, for a scavenger, it has no sense of smell and depends on the smaller vultures to locate its food. Once the smaller vultures concentrate at the carrion, it spots them from high in the sky.
Macaws, like the blue-and-yellow of this picture, mate for life and the female usually lays 3 eggs at a time. However, only one chick survives: it seems the parents are only interested in feeding the most dominant of the three, ignoring the hungry screams of their two other chicks.
ABOUT MANU NATIONAL PARK
The Amazon extends an enormous 7 million square kilometers over 9 South American countries. Its biodiversity seems to have no end; till this day nobody has been able to determine its total plant and insect species. And even among birds and mammals new species are still being discovered every year.
pantiacolla.com MANU IS THE ONE RAINFOREST YOU SHOULDN’T MISS
The emperor tamarin is one of Manu's smallest monkeys, and its females have an exciting life style: they live with 2 or 3 males, who all court her and all help to carry her twins once they are born after 5 months of pregnancy. Who says men always have to be jealous?
Pantiacolla
The owners of Pantiacolla have based their Manu tour operations on their love for nature and their intention to add to the protection of the Amazon. They have now begun a new blog on Pantiacolla’s website, KEEPERS OF THE AMAZON, https://pantiacolla.com/blog/, to share their experiences with you about both these aspects.
Its first essay, https://pantiacolla.com/the-amarakaeri-fall-from-eden/, is about their involvement in a lawsuit launched by the indigenous people of the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve, neighboring Manu National Park, against a USA-based oil company.
