Filipino parents often expect their adult children to care for them in their old age, a belief strongly tied to the concept of filial piety. This sense of duty, rooted in the cultural value of "utang na loob," reflects deep commitments to family, loyalty, and reciprocal care. Parents invest in their children's upbringing and education, and in return, it is expected that the children will take care of them when they age and retire. This reciprocal relationship is seen as a moral and social obligation, where caring for aging parents is not just a duty but also a way to honor them.

The Article 195 of the Family Code explicitly lists the order of persons who are obliged to support each other, which includes parents and their children. As per this code, children are bound to provide support to their parents when they are in need. The criteria for support should be in keeping with the financial capacity of the giver and the needs of the recipient. It's not about providing luxury but addressing basic needs.

On the other hand, the F.I.R.E (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement represents a newer philosophy that emphasizes individual financial independence. It advocates for aggressive saving and investing during the early stages of one’s career with the goal of retiring early. This movement prioritizes self-reliance, autonomy, and the pursuit of personal goals, often with the aim of enjoying a more flexible and leisure-focused lifestyle in later years.

For those following the FIRE philosophy, the idea is to minimize reliance on others, including one’s children, in old age. This movement is particularly popular among younger generations who value freedom, personal choice, and the ability to dictate their own paths in life.

Younger Filipinos who are influenced by the FIRE movement may prioritize their financial independence and personal goals over the traditional expectation to care for their parents. This can lead to misunderstandings or even conflict within families, as the older generation may perceive this shift as a rejection of cultural values or as a sign of selfishness.

Navigating this cultural and generational divide often requires open communication and mutual understanding within families. Some families may find ways to integrate the values of both traditions, such as planning for their parents’ financial security while also working towards personal financial independence.

Having children doesn’t automatically make them your retirement plan, and being a child doesn’t mean you’re free from the responsibility of helping your parents. The key is finding the right balance, which can be achieved with the help of a trusted and skilled financial advisor.
