Public Health Advisory: MPOX (Formerly Monkeypox)

MPOX, previously known as Monkeypox, is a viral infection that has been causing concern globally. The disease is caused by the MPOX virus, a member of the Orthopoxviral family. While usually less severe than smallpox, MPOX can still present significant health risks and challenges.

Current Situation:

Recent reports indicate a rise in MPOX cases in various regions. Public health authorities are actively monitoring the situation and working to prevent further spread. The following advisory provides essential information to help manage and mitigate the risk associated with MPOX.

Symptoms:

Individuals infected with MPOX may experience the following symptoms:

Fever
Chills
Headache
Muscle aches
Fatigue
Swollen lymph nodes
A rash typically develops, starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body. The rash progresses through several stages, including macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, and scabs.

Transmission:

MPOX spreads through:

Direct contact with infectious sores or scabs.
Respiratory droplets from prolonged face-to-face contact.
Contaminated materials such as bedding or clothing.
Prevention Measures:

Avoid close contact with individuals who have symptoms of MPOX.
Practice frequent handwashing with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for individuals with MPOX.
Clean and disinfect surfaces and materials that may have been contaminated.
Management and Treatment:

There is no specific antiviral treatment for MPOX. Supportive care is recommended to manage symptoms.
In severe cases, antiviral medications like tecovirimat (TPOXX) may be considered.
Vaccination against smallpox may offer some protection against MPOX.
If You Suspect Exposure:

Monitor for symptoms and consult a healthcare provider if they develop.
Inform healthcare providers about any recent exposure to suspected or confirmed cases of MPOX.
