𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞: China (People’s Republic of China) has been sighted to have repeated aggressions towards the Philippine forces posted on the West Philippine Sea (WPS). In a more recent event at the Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal), 8 mariners were injured and one lost a finger in one of the said aggressions the Chinese forces did towards the Philippine servicemen. Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) commander Alonso Torres Jr. reported having CCG personnel illegally boarding Philippine rubber boats conducting a routine resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded vessel situated at the shoal as an outpost to maintain Philippine claim over the reef. The continued aggression in the area has led to a problem in Philippine operations in the area.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jiang was dismissive of the AFP’s report by stating it was not humanitarian in nature, and it was the Filipinos being aggressive to the Chinese.

However, multiple reports from the AFP and the Philippine Coast Guards (PCG) presented the opposite. In January of this year, Chinese vessels were known to be harassing Filipino fishermen who were fishing by disallowing them to fish in the waters. Another AFP report via PCG spokesperson, Jay Tarriola shows the Chinese Coast Guards (CCG) being belligerent towards the Filipino mariners. There were also AFP reports backed with evidence of the Chinese smuggling weapons to the Chinese vessels. In the previous month, it has been sighted they stole airdropped supplies meant for the Philippine forces.

Furthermore, the aggressions in the West Philippine Sea have been met with commentary and criticisms from politicians, other public servants, and the general public. Sen. Risa Hontiveros stated that China has violated not just human rights, but as well as international law. Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano implored diplomatic solutions for the conflict resolution. The United States of America (US) has pledged support for the Philippines and is pushing for the enactment of the Mutual Defense Treaty of 1951 to back the Philippine forces in the continuation of such aggression.

With such events happening in the WPS, the Philippine forces remain resilient in guarding the area as it has always been part of Philippine sovereignty as its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which was reinstated in the ruling of the Philippine-China Arbitration Case last 2016.

The Josenian Junior Diplomats, along with the rest of the world and the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), commemorate 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐠𝐞𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 last June 20.

The JJD prays for the safety of the 120 million people from around the world who sought refuge away from the nightmares of their own countries.

May they be provided with the support, privileges, and their rights upheld abroad. May they be able to return to a peaceful homeland.

Today marks the 126th year of Philippine independence through the bravery of our heroes. We commemorate their efforts and courage for standing up against the atrocities of the colonizers. May this independence remind us to stand up for our country and the truth.

Let us maintain our independence through diplomacy, upholding the rights and welfare of our countrymen, and defending our national territory.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓’𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃

𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞: Diplomats walked out at the 112th International Labour Convention at the United Nations Geneva. The video surfaced on June 6, 2024 via X (formerly Twitter) that shows multiple delegates walking out amidst the conference. The walk-out was done in protest of what is currently happening in Palestine first in Gaza, and much more recently, Rafah.

The video is also posted in other video sharing websites such as TikTok and YouTube, where one zoomed version of the walk out showed the names of countries of the delegates who voluntarily walked out.
