Asiatic Palm Weevils (APW) are snout beetles that deposit eggs on coconut trunks or fronds. Its infestations are usually hardly noticed, mostly leading to the death of the palms.

The Visayas State University (VSU), through a DOST-PCAARRD-funded project under the Coconut Hybridization Program (CHP), is developing an early warning system and packaging an improved S&T-based Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy to sustainably control APWs affecting hybrid coconuts in Eastern Visayas.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒: Around 35 participants convened for the first-ever, "Strengthening DOST-PCAARRD's Internal Capacity in Policymaking: A Training Workshop on Policy Analysis and Advocacy (PAA Training)," held on August 9, 2024 (Introductory Training) and August 13–15, 2024 (Intensive Sessions) at E.O. Tan Hall, DOST-PCAARRD, Los Baños, Laguna. The training series aimed to enhance the role of DOST-PCAARRD's staff in policymaking by equipping them with the necessary skills in policy analysis and advocacy.

The PAA Training was honored to have distinguished speakers deliver their messages of support, including Undersecretary for Special Concerns Ted Gatchalian, DOST-PCAARRD Executive Director Reynaldo V. Ebora, Dr. Juanito T. Batalon, and Dr. Melvin B. Carlos. Resource persons for the training included esteemed officials from the Senate of the Philippines and the House of Representatives, DOST-Department Legislative Liaison Office (DLLO), and UP National College of Public Administration and Governance.

DOST-PCAARRD commissioned a project to examine policy and institutional constraints impacting R&D. Titled “Assessment of Policy Constraints to the Effective and Efficient Conduct of Public R&D in the Philippines,” the project was led by Prof. Nelson Jose Vincent B. Querijero from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).
