Do Sierra Madre and Cordillera Mountain Ranges really reduce the impacts of the Tropical Storms or Typhoons coming to North Luzon?
Answer: Not Yes, and also Not No. IT DEPENDS ON WHAT HAZARD IS CONCERNED.

This is to address the circulating facebook posts indicating that the Sierra Madre is our “Natural Barrier” against tropical cyclones.

A study conducted by Gerry Bagtasa and Bernard Alan B. Racoma (2023) published on the Philippine Journal of Science, has the following findings and conclusions after conducting simulations on tropical cyclones, which I summarized for your easier reading and better understanding:
1. The intensity of the tropical cyclones are not significantly weakened during landfall and during the first 6 hours traversing the land.
2. Both Sierra Madre and Cordillera Mountain Ranges decrease the velocity of the tropical cyclones.
3. In terms of Wind, both mountain ranges can reduce wind field energy, with the Cordillera Mountain Range contributing greater to the weakening than the Sierra Madre Mountain Range.
4. In terms of Rain, the tropical cyclones induce more rainfall at the western slopes of the Sierra Madre, Cordillera, and in Metro Manila, while decreases in Cagayan Valley and the eastern slopes of the Cordillera.
5. The Cagayan Valley, despite having Sierra Madre being an effective barrier against Wind and Rainfall which reduces wind exposure and basin-wide rainfall, is still very vulnerable to extreme tropical cycle events.
6. A decrease in wind exposure may induce more rainfall in some areas, just as the case in Metro Manila.
7. Tropical cyclones damages are more water-related than wind-related, thus relying on the idea that Cordillera and Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges are natural barriers is flawed and not acceptable, and “may lead to complacency”.
8. It is recommended to shift the discussion in protecting the mountain ranges from anthropogenic (human) activities like irresponsible logging and mining as these are areas rich in biodiversity.
