Sharing with you some snaps from the event and what we have accomplished during our on-site implementation of Project APUWA's advocacy earlier this morning at the Brgy. 75-A, Sama-Bajau Community, Matina Aplaya, Davao City.🥰

We are eternally grateful to the support we have received - most especially from DYESABEL Philippines and the Sama-Bajau community that has contributed to the overall success of our advocacy. We hope that you have learned a worthwhile lesson about the use of Facebook in doing business and ways to promote your products to reach a wider scope of potential customers.💙✨

Tomorrow is the big day! We will visit the Sama-Bajau community in Matina Aplaya with our partner organization, DYESABEL Philippines. We will discuss how to use Facebook in doing business and promote their products effectively on the said platform. Moreover, we will discuss the use of digital payment such as Gcash as a tool for payment mode of option for their business page creation.🥰

There will also be a workshop where they will design tote bags, which will then be sold on their page, applying what they have learned from the discussion. All earnings from this activity will directly go to the Sama-Bajau community as it will be used for their needs.🤩

We can’t wait to be there are put our efforts of this advocacy to reality with the main objective of helping the Sama-Bajaus to help them in their livelihood and give them those that they greatly need of health-related items.💙✨

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐏𝐔𝐖𝐀 aims to be transparent about our advocacy, especially on money matters gathered through the donation drive. Indeed, we are very grateful to the hearts of our donors and sponsors for sharing their blessings with our cause. Thus, we are more than ecstatic and happy to share with you all that so far, we have raised a total of P11,200!🤗👏💙

All this money gathered will be used to buy First Aid Kits, Medicines, and Blood Pressure Instrument for community use. This will allow the Sama-Bajaus to access such things conveniently, at any time of the day or night, as it is in the care of someone who can be easily reachable and a health worker.🤗💙

With the lack of access to proper necessities, such as clean water, access to healthier foods, a proper drainage system, and the vulnerability of the stockpile of water pollution, it is known that the Sama-Bajaus in the Matina Aplaya are greatly affected by health issues, namely, Allergies, Fever, Diarrhea, and Loose Bowel Movement (LBM).

To give you a glimpse of some of the health-related problems experienced in the Sama-Bajau community, below are helpful publications that can help you see a picture of what these are:🧐

Who are the Sama-Bajaus?

𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐚-𝐁𝐚𝐣𝐚𝐮 or 𝐁𝐚𝐣𝐚𝐮 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐭 are among the only few remaining true sea nomads. They are a Malay ethnic community inhabiting a large ocean area between Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia living almost exclusively at sea. In Davao City, they are situated in Brgy. 75-A, Bajau Community, Matina Aplaya, Davao City. In the last few decades many have been forced to settle permanently on land, but a dwindling number still call the ocean home, living on long boats known as "lepa-lepa."🌊

They are skilled free divers with nets hunting for fish and quest in searching for pearls. Usually, they live a seaborne lifestyle, and use small wooden sailing vessels. Today, their common livelihood is selling “ukay-ukay” clothes and shoes in different bustling streets here in the Philippines as they tend to travel far places just to sell their products. This includes places such as Gensan, Cagayan de Oro, Midsayap, and nearby places in South Central Mindanao.🤗

In continuing the mission and goals of our partner organization, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐏𝐔𝐖𝐀 is ready to set sail with a commitment to care for the Sama-Bajau community. Aligning the SDG Goal No. 3 ensures healthy lives and promotes well-being for all ages. We proudly advocate for a healthier community where education on health-related matters, proper health check-ups and monitoring are our utmost priority.

With commitment and passion for serving, we are ready to embark on this project with our partner organization DYESABEL (Developing the Youth with Environmentally Sustainable Advocacies Building and Empowering Lives) Inc. Introducing 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐏𝐔𝐖𝐀, an Ignatian Advocacy by 4th year Bachelor of Science in Marketing students of Ateneo de Davao University!✨️💙

The word 𝐀𝐏𝐔𝐖𝐀 is a Bajau term for health and wellness. The main focus of this project is the Indigenous People (IP), specifically the Sama-Bajaus community in Matina Aplaya, who are vulnerable to health-related problems due to the lack of access to basic necessities.

Our advocacy highlights the importance of caring for one’s health condition and creating a healthy community after acquiring knowledge on how to avoid health-related issues. To do this, a deeper dialogue with the Bajau community, hearing their concerns and sentiments regarding their health problems, is necessary to address the related matters effectively. Along with this are the check-ups to be conducted in the community to really know other problems that they may have been dealing with.
