Just In: PCA Zamboanga del Norte, Federation of Coconut Farmers and Coconut Farmer Cooperatives meet at Wilmar Edible Oils Phils Inc.

On April 12, 2024, PCDM Bihildis Quezon arranged a forum with the largest coconut oil mill in the province and the coconut farmers organizations and cooperative to discuss the pressing issue on white copra. The farmer organizations present were Federation of Small Coconut Farmers in Katipunan, Zamboanga del Norte Federation of Small Coconut Farmers represented by Engr Gerardo Eroy the Federation President, Sibutad Zamboanga del Norte Federation of Small Coconut Farmers represented by Carmelita Tubil, Matam Small Coconut Farmers Agri Cooperative, Polanco Coconut Farmers Marketing Cooperative represented by Manager Rogelio Baje, Sta. Cruz La Libertad Small Coconut Farmers MPC represented by Manager Neri Arañas, Sindangan FACOMA, Salug Farmers MPC (formerly Salug Small Coconut Farmers MPC), Venus Small Coconut Farmers Multipurpose Association, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) students from JRMSU Tampilisan, Renier Montemayor and Michael Gorgolon of Sustainable Livelihood Project-DSWD, Roger Laquihon of DTI and Agriculturists of PCA Zamboanga del Norte.

Engr Arnold Salaveria, the Factory Manager of Wilmar Edible Oil Phils in Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte disclosed that they are now accommodating white to light brown copra directly from coconut farmers. These coconut farmers can skip the queuing period as long as their copra are white to light-brown at millgate price.

Wilmar Edible Oil Phils in Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte further disclosed that the urgent requirement from European consumers are coconut oils with accaptable levels of MOSH-MOAH. MOSH-MOAH is defined as Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons and Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

To produce white to light brown copra, Wilmar suggests to process the copra through sun-drying or indirect heat from dryers (landahan). The smoke that makes contact to copra during drying in landahan increases the exposure of copra to aromatic hydrocarbons and contributes the dark color to the copra.

Besides the fast accommodation of white to light brown copra suppliers, Wilmar provides drums and chimneys to cooperatives to modify the existing facilities (landahan) to attain the required copra quality.

The presence of DSWD-SLP and DTI fosters the acquisition of Kukum Hot Air Dryers to selected coconut farmer-cooperative proponents.

Initially, Salug Farmers MPC supplies white to brown copra to Wilmar at very good price.
