Mangrove forests are coastal forests and critical habitats that act as nurseries and protect coasts from erosion.
They are mainly found on coastlines in tropical and subtropical areas and are unfortunately heavily threatened ecosystems.

: Mangroves are like nature's kidneys! These ecosystems trap and filter harmful chemicals from the air and soil, before these reach beaches, rivers, and bays!

Happy International Day of Forests!🌿
Today, we celebrate the enchanting beauty of our forests, the defenders of the Earth’s biodiversity. Forests embody resilience and serve as an emblem of promise for a sustainable future. A plethora of life flourishes beneath their lush canopies, providing an amazing haven for wildlife.
Let us also not forget to acknowledge our mangrove forests, the guardians of our coastlines. Their intricate roots and canopies confirm nature's adaptability and strength. Mangrove forests function as a buffer against the adverse effects of climate change, offer habitat for innumerable species, and sequester carbon dioxide, reducing greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
As we ponder the splendor of our mangrove forests, let us stay cognizant of our duty as stewards of the environment. Join us and let's be unified in our mission of conserving and protecting our mangrove forests. 🌱💚💛

This Saturday, March 23, 2024, Mangrove Matters PH will be hosting USAPANG BAKAWAN: An Educational Discussion on Mangrove Conservation in Brgy. Tibsoc, mainly for the youth of San Enrique, Negros Occidental.
The event aims to foster an interactive learning experience for the youth, focusing on the importance of mangrove forests, the threats they face, and how we can work together to protect these vital ecosystems. The youth will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the proper mangrove planting protocol and mangrove nursery management, gaining hands-on experience and practical knowledge.
San Enrique is located within the Negros Occidental Coastal Wetland Conservation Area (NOCWCA), recognized as a wetland of international importance, making this event even more significant in raising awareness and promoting conservation efforts.
The event is made possible by the generous support of UNICEF Philippines through the Positive Youth Development Network and its Kabataang Resilient Program.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting initiative, as we work together to ensure a sustainable future for our mangrove forests and the communities that depend on them. 🌱

FUN FACT: Mangroves survive only in warm climates. Currently, it covers about 57,000 square miles of the earth's surface---about the size of Greece! 😲
The Philippines is one of these lucky places where they thrive. Sadly, projects like reclamation continue to threaten these mangrove forests. BUT we can do something about it! Sign-up and write to our government leaders to sign the bill and pass the National Coastal Greenbelt/Integrated Coastal Management Act and protect our mangrove forests! https://tinyurl.com/RestoreMangrovesFB
