It's time to "unschool" ourselves on the traditional perspective of early childhood learning. Let's start with two contrived scenarios to paint a picture...

- Scenario 1: Child reviewing a letter or number chart.
- Scenario 2: Child splashing around in a water table.

Most would quickly and confidently say that Scenario 1 is the more meaningful experience with regards to learning. However, it's actually Scenario 2 that offers exceptional learning benefits. But how? Through Scenario 2:

Multiple senses are activated, including touch, sight, hearing, and sometimes even smell. This multi-sensory experience stimulates various regions of the brain, enhancing learning and memory formation. This integration of sensory-motor-cognitive processes contributes to a deeper understanding of concepts.

Active engagement in hands-on activities requires cognitive engagement, including problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making. When children splash water, they are naturally observing, predicting, experimenting, and adjusting their actions, which stimulates cognitive development and higher-order thinking skills.

Hands-on activities often evoke emotions, which can enhance learning and memory consolidation. The enjoyment, excitement, and curiosity experienced while splashing water create positive emotional associations, making the learning experience more memorable and facilitating long-term retention.

We need to focus on the building blocks of brain development and the corresponding experiences that fuels learning how to learn. And passive, sedentary memorization drills just isn't it. Don't worry - colors, shapes, letters, and numbers are everywhere! The real-world exposure allows for quicker and more meaningful comprehension of symbols, as they are connected to relevant experiences and practical applications.

Sooner does not suggest better, and memorization of these symbols are not the epitome of early learning experiences.
