Melodies and Memories for our BulsuJUANS Freshies

Last Wednesday, August 28, 2024, the most anticipated event prepared for the newest addition to the BulSU community was held at the university's activity center. With the theme โ€œBulSU-Ikot: Unang Arangkada sa Panibagong Simula,โ€ the welcoming event for freshmen students was made possible with the collaboration of the four colleges, namely College of Education (COED), College of Engineering (COE), College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE), and College of Business Education and Accountancy (CBEA).

The gates were opened at exactly 1:00 pm. Hosted by Adrian Abajar and Ara Merlen Mendoza, a few of the students were interviewed while settling down. The event started with an invocation, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the hymn of the university. The opening remarks were given by the Dean of Student Affairs and Services, Associate Professor Joseph Roy F. Celestino.

Filled with excitement and enthusiasm, an inspirational message from the governor of CCJE was also heard by the first year students. Mr. Lord Peterson Vistan highlighted the theme by explaining the geographical location of the buildings of the colleges involved, which is said to be circular. Vistan also added, โ€œAng BulSU-Ikot ay pag-ikot ng mga prinsipyo bilang mga iskolar ng bayan at magpatuloy sa laban para sa pagkakaroon ng malayang espasyo sa ating pamantasan.โ€

The concert was also an avenue for BulSUans to showcase their talents as bands and dance troupes were invited to perform on stage and promote their groups. The MMS band, Lex Live Band, IEDENTITY, and CBEA Magnateโ€™s band strummed their guitars and raised their mics to serenade the young audiences. Showing grooves and sharp movements, the Lex Iconics, COED SMMES, B'ZUP, and Elite Magnates, entertained the crowd with their upbeat and fancy dances. Every group was given a certificate of appreciation and participation and a photo opportunity with the respective governors of their colleges.

During the event, a representative from the office of the governor visited and relayed the message of the Hon. Daniel R. Fernando. Showing his support to the local student councils of the colleges, he generously sent twenty-five thousand pesos. Raffles are also facilitated by Ms. Raellie Joyce Nicolas, Ms. Roshan Reyes, and Ms. Sunshine Banting during breaks wherein names of freshmen students were drawn. The winners are asked to communicate with their class mayors to claim their prizes.

The most-awaited guest stars, The Juans, closed the event by performing some of their iconic tracks. โ€œGupit,โ€ their song collaboration with Alamat, was also witnessed by the BulSUans. The group made the audience jump with their songs and connect with their relatable remarks. Despite a couple of power interruptions during the event, it was considered successful as it plastered smiles on the faces of the first-year students providing them a breather from the academic workloads.

Rising Voices: BulSUโ€™s First Day Fight Sets the Tone for 2024-2025

August 12, 2024 - Bulacan State University (BulSU) launched the Academic Year 2024-2025 with the LAGABLABAN: First Day Fight 2024 event. The day began with the Snake Rally at 1:00 PM on the university grounds, followed by a series of activities at the front of SG Office at 2:00 PM onwards. Various sectors within the university, including BulsU One, BulSU Bahaghari, and Student Publications and Socio-cultural organizations, delivered solidarity messages. They outlined their goals for the new academic year and aimed to present and raise these concerns to the university administration.

Senator Elijah Canlas, chairperson of the BulSU Students' Rights and Welfare Committee, delivered a passionate address urging students to persist in their activism. โ€ His remarks underscored that the fight for student rights requires ongoing effort and commitment.

Governor Alvin formally opened the event and engaged with panelists to discuss key issues facing the university. Socio-Cultural President Mark Hilario, highlighted the challenges faced by cultural performers at BulSU, who spend countless hours rehearsing and representing the university at events. Despite their dedication, they often struggle to gain support from professors and face funding issues. Hilario called for increased scholarship support, noting that the current โ‚ฑ5,000 per semester is insufficient to cover their needs.

Chairperson Sabrina addressed challenges faced by organizations at BulSU, including a shortage of classrooms and organizational spaces exacerbated by excessive heat. The current headquarters for organizations on the 5th floor of the E-library is inadequate for the needs of BulSU's 92 organizations. She also pointed out issues such as a lack of advisor supportโ€”some organizations struggle with advisor turnoverโ€”slow budget allocation, and financial support from the administration. These issues have hindered organizations, particularly those competing outside the university. Even those with their own Income Generating Projects (IGP) or funds struggle to meet their needs, sometimes covering expenses out of pocket, which are not always reimbursed. Sabrina stressed the importance of raising awareness among students, especially freshmen, about the various organizations at BulSU. The Office of Student Organizations and Activities (OSOA) aims to educate students on these groups, which are crucial for developing essential skills.

Representative Sheila from the sector of the Student Publications voices out the current issues and concerns of all Student Publications in internal and external campuses. She first pointed out the lack of budget and financial assistance in the said sector. โ€œMay dumadating na pondo pero ang nangyayari kasi ay nagkakaroon ng delays dahil sa mabagal na processingโ€. She also highlighted the other publications who do not have their own office.

The President of BulSU Bahaghari, representing the LGBTQIA+ sector, raised concerns about an incoming student at the College of Education (COED) reconsidering their decision to enroll at BulSU due to reported restrictions on wearing gender-affirmative clothing. The Bahaghari representative called for equal treatment across all colleges and advocated for the implementation of Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) guidelines. They also urged the institutionalization of BulSU Pride to ensure that the LGBTQIA+ community feels welcomed and celebrated throughout the university, not just within their organization.

The First Day Fight 2024 highlighted critical issues affecting students, organizations, and the LGBTQIA+ community. As the academic year begins, BulSUโ€™s student leaders remain committed to addressing these challenges and continuing their advocacy for the rights and welfare of the student body. The university administration must address these concerns and work collaboratively with students and organizations throughout the year to foster an inclusive and supportive environment.
