GOOD FRIDAY
Today is the Lord's Passion. Let us remember his suffering and death. Let SILENCE cover us today as an act of reverence for the Son of God, who died for the salvation of this world. Let SILENCE speak with us, teach us, and convert us to being like Jesus, who is the true meaning of LOVE.
MAUNDY THURSDAY
Today, the church will commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus. Jesus knew that the hour had come. He was fully aware of what had to happen, yet during the Supper, he showed his great love and compassion to his people. He loved his own in the world, and he loved them to the end (John 13:1).
HAPPY FEAST DAY OF SAINT JOSEPH!!
Today, we want to pray to . O Blessed St. Joseph, protect all the workers, especially those in humanitarian aid, who often risk or sacrifice their lives to rescue others. VALENTINE'S DAY (ST VALENTINE)
O glorious advocate and protector, Saint Valentine, look with pity upon our wants, hear our requests, attend to our prayers, relieve by your intercession the miseries under which we labor, and obtain for us the Divine blessing, that we may be found worthy to join thee in praising the Almighty for all eternity; through the merits of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Pray, then, O holy Martyr, for the faithful, who are so persevering in celebrating thy memory. The day of Judgment will reveal to us all thy glorious merits. Oh! intercede for us, that we may then be made thy companions at the right hand of the Great Judge, and be united with thee eternally in heaven.
Let us pray
Grant, we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that we who solemnize the festival of blessed Valentine, Thy Martyr, may, by his intercession, be delivered from all the evils that threaten us. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
St. Valentine, martyr, and patron saint of lovers, pray for us!
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!"
Psalm 119:1
May we all have this kind of prayer,
"Instruct me, O LORD, in the way of your statutes,
that I may exactly observe them.
Give me discernment, that I may observe your law
and keep it with all my heart."
Reflecting the Presentation of Jesus
One of the verses I remember from childhood comes from Luke 2:52 which reads "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people". In this verse, we are reminded that Jesus Christ was both human and God. The context of this verse was that Jesus' earthly parents, Joseph and Mary, lost Jesus and found Him at the temple courts conversing with teachers and talking about His Father's house at the early age of twelve. Though puzzled about the experience, His mother treasured all these events in her heart.
A similar puzzling experience for Jesus' parents happened much earlier when He was presented in the temple. Fulfilling what was required by the Law of Moses that every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord, the baby Jesus was brought to the temple. Despite the obvious that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were ordinary* people, Simeon, a just and devout man prompted by the Spirit, recognized Jesus Christ and was able to utter words praising God. We remember these words today when we recite or sing Simeon's Canticle or Song of Simeon. Aside from those words and actions blessing them, Simeon warned Mary about Jesus' destiny. Another woman, Anna, described as an elderly widow serving God in the temple through fasting and prayer, recognized Jesus' and began praising God. She also knew that Jesus was special. The gospel ends with Jesus, Mary, and Joseph leaving the temple and it was described that the child (Jesus) grew to maturity, was filled with wisdom, and God's favor was with Him.
The gospel today invites us to reflect on the following:
1. Simeon had the privilege of seeing God in the flesh within His lifetime (before his death) because of His willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit. What is the Spirit of God prompting us to do today?
2. How can I tell the difference between being led by the Holy Spirit or just being led by my own wishes or desires?
3. What attributes and qualities do I want to emulate from Anna? What concrete actions will I do to demonstrate these traits today?
4. What tends to distract me or hinders me from recognizing God's work of redemption today? What do I ask the Holy Spirit to do with regard to this?
The characters in today's gospel were all faithful to God's commandments. Joseph and Mary were obedient to the law that is why they presented Jesus in the temple. Simeon and Anna were devout and their thoughts, words, and actions were prompted by the Holy Spirit. As Christians, we, too, have the privilege to experience God daily. Let us allow His Spirit to move us and lead us into actions that glorify and praise God.
Let John Wimber's Spirit Song be our blessing and prayer today:
Oh, let the Son of God enfold you with his Spirit and his love; Let him fill your heart and satisfy your soul
Oh, let him have the things that hold you, and his Spirit, like a dove, Will descend upon your life and make you whole
Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs
Oh, come and sing the song with gladness as your hearts are filled with joy
Lift your hands in sweet surrender to his name
Oh, give him all your tears and sadness, give him all your years of pain, And you'll enter into life in Jesus' name
Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs
Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs
Oh, let the Son of God enfold you with his Spirit and his love; Let him fill your heart and satisfy your soul
Oh, let him have the things that hold you, and his Spirit, like a dove, Will descend upon your life and make you whole
He'll descend upon your life and make you whole
I will continue, O my God, to do all my actions for the love of You.
*Offerings made in the temple were typically a lamb for richer people, and two turtledoves/pigeons for the poor.
