📖 UNANG PAGBASA
1 Corinto 1, 17-25

Pagbasa mula sa unang sulat ni Apostol San Pablo sa mga taga-Corinto

Mga kapatid, sapagkat sinugo ako ni Kristo, hindi upang magbinyag kundi upang mangaral ng Mabuting Balita. Ipinangaral ko nga ito, ngunit hindi sa pamamagitan ng pananalitang batay sa karunungan ng sanlibutan upang sa gayo’y hindi mawalan ng kabuluhan ang kamatayan ni Kristo sa krus.

Sa mga napapahamak, ang aral tungkol sa pagkamatay ni Kristo sa krus ay kahangalan; ngunit sa atin na mga inililigtas, ito’y kapangyarihan ng Diyos. Sapagkat nasusulat, “Sisirain ko ang karunungan ng marurunong, at pawawalang-kabuluhan ang katalinuhan ng matatalino.” Ano ang kabuluhan ngayon ng marurunong, ng mga eskriba, ng mahuhusay na dibatista sa daigdig na ito? Ipinakilala ng Diyos na ang karunungan ng sanlibutang ito ay kamangmangan.

Sapagkat ayon sa karunungan ng Diyos, hindi niya itinulot na siya’y makilala ng tao sa pamamagitan ng karunungan ng sanlibutang ito. Sa halip, minarapat niyang ang mga nananalig sa kanya’y iligtas sa pamamagitan ng Mabuting Balita na aming ipinangangaral ngunit ipinalalagay naman ng sanlibutan na isang kahangalan. Ang mga Judio’y humihingi ng kababalaghan bilang katunayan. Karunungan naman ang hinahanap ng mga Griego. Ngunit ang ipinangangaral nami’y si Kristong ipinako sa krus – isang katitisuran sa mga Judio at kahangalan para sa mga Hentil. Subalit sa mga tinawag ng Diyos, maging Judio at Griego, si Kristo ang kapangyarihan at karunungan ng Diyos. Sapagkat ang inaakala nilang kahangalan ng Diyos ay karunungang higit kaysa lahat ng karunungan ng tao, at ang inaakala namang kahinaan ng Diyos ay lakas na higit sa lahat ng kalakasan ng tao.

Mateo 25, 1-13

Ang Mabuting Balita ng Panginoon ayon kay San Mateo

Noong panahong iyon, sinabi ni Hesus sa kanyang mga alagad ang talinghagang ito: “Dito maitutulad ang pagpasok sa kaharian ng Diyos: may sampung dalagang lumabas upang sumalubong sa lalaking ikakasal. Bawat isa’y may dalang ilawan. Ang lima sa kanila’y hangal at ang lima’y matalino. Ang mga hangal ay nagdala ng kanilang mga ilawan ngunit hindi nagbaon ng langis. Subalit ang matatalino’y nagdala ng langis bukod pa sa nasa kanilang ilawan. Nabalam ng dating ang lalaking ikakasal, kaya’t inantok silang lahat at nakatulog.

Ngunit nang hatinggabi na’y may sumigaw: ‘Narito na ang lalaking ikakasal! Salubungin ninyo!’ Agad nagbangon ang sampung dalaga at inayos ang kanilang ilawan. Sinabi ng mga hangal sa matatalino, ‘Bigyan naman ninyo kami ng kaunting langis. Aandap-andap na ang aming mga ilawan, e!’ ‘Baka hindi magkasiya ito sa ating lahat,’ tugon ng matatalino. ‘Mabuti pa’y pumunta muna kayo sa nagtitinda at bumili ng para sa inyo.’ Kaya’t lumakad ang limang hangal na dalaga. Samantalang bumibili sila, dumating ang lalaking ikakasal. Ang limang nakahanda ay kasama niyang pumasok sa kasalan, at ipininid ang pinto.

Pagkatapos, dumating naman ang limang hangal na dalaga. ‘Panginoon, papasukin po ninyo kami!’ sigaw nila. Ngunit tumugon siya, ‘Sinasabi ko sa inyo: hindi ko kayo nakikilala.’ Kaya magbantay kayo, sapagkat hindi ninyo alam ang araw ni ang oras.”

Isidore has become the patron of farmers and rural communities. In particular, he is the patron of Madrid, Spain, and of the United States National Rural Life Conference.

When he was barely old enough to wield a hoe, Isidore entered the service of John de Vergas, a wealthy landowner from Madrid, and worked faithfully on his estate outside the city for the rest of his life. He married a young woman as simple and upright as himself who also became a saint—Maria de la Cabeza. They had one son, who died as a child.

Isidore had deep religious instincts. He rose early in the morning to go to church and spent many a holiday devoutly visiting the churches of Madrid and surrounding areas. All day long, as he walked behind the plow, he communed with God. His devotion, one might say, became a problem, for his fellow workers sometimes complained that he often showed up late because of lingering in church too long.

He was known for his love of the poor, and there are accounts of Isidore’s supplying them miraculously with food. He had a great concern for the proper treatment of animals.

He died May 15, 1130, and was declared a saint in 1622, with Saints Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila, and Philip Neri. Together, the group is known in Spain as “the five saints.”

Dear brethren in Christ, HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! The entire world today celebrates Valentine’s day as a tribute to human love.
Nevertheless, Valentine is the name of a Roman saint martyr included in the old Roman liturgical calendar (but is still celebrated in some localities although the 1st Sunday of Lent precedes over it this year) and is considered as the Patron of Love, Young People and Happy Marriages.

Let us ask God through the intercession of St. Valentine so that YOUNG PEOPLE, ENGAGED AND MARRIED COUPLES, MAY TRULY HAVE A CLEAN, HOLY AND HAPPY LOVE WHICH IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE LOVE OF GOD!

Saint Valentine (Latin: Valentinius), officially Saint Valentine of Rome, is a widely recognized third-century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 and associated since the High Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love.

All that is reliably known of the saint commemorated on July 23 is his name and that he was martyred and buried at a cemetery on the Via Flaminia close to the Milvian bridge to the north of Rome on that day. It is uncertain whether St. Valentine is to be identified as one saint or the conflation of two saints of the same name. Several different martyrologies have been added to later hagiographies that are unreliable.

Because so little is known of him, in 1969 the Catholic Church removed his name from the General Roman Calendar, leaving his liturgical celebration to local calendars. The Catholic Church continues to recognize him as a saint, listing him as such in the February 14 entry in the Roman Martyrology, and authorizing liturgical veneration of him on February 14 in any place where that day is not devoted to some other obligatory celebration in accordance with the rule that on such a day the Mass may be that of any saint listed in the Martyrology for that day. Use of the pre-1970 liturgical calendar is also authorized under the conditions indicated in the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum of 2007. Saint Valentine's Church in Rome, built in 1960 for the needs of the Olympic Village, continues as a modern, well-visited parish church.
The legends attributed to the mysterious saint are as inconsistent as the actual identification of the man.

One common story about St. Valentine is that in one point of his life, as the former Bishop of Terni, Narnia and Amelia, he was on house arrest with Judge Asterius. While discussing religion and faith with the Judge, Valentine pledged the validity of Jesus. The judge immediately put Valentine and his faith to the test.
St. Valentine was presented with the judge's blind daughter and told to restore her sight. If he succeeded, the judge vowed to do anything for Valentine. Placing his hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored the child's vision.

Judge Asterius was humbled and obeyed Valentine's requests. Asterius broke all the idols around his house, fasted for three days and became baptized, along with his family and entire 44 member household. The now faithful judge then freed all of his Christian inmates.

St. Valentine was later arrested again for continuing to try to convert people to Christianity. He was sent to Rome under the emperor Claudius Gothicus (Claudius II). According to the popular hagiographical identity, and what is believed to be the first representation of St. Valentine, the Nuremberg Chronicle, St. Valentine was a Roman priest martyred during Claudius' reign. The story tells that St. Valentine was imprisoned for marrying Christian couples and aiding Christians being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Both acts were considered serious crimes. A relationship between the saint and emperor began to grow, until Valentine attempted to convince Claudius of Christianity. Claudius became raged and sentenced Valentine to death, commanding him to renounce his faith or be beaten with clubs and beheaded.

St. Valentine refused to renounce his faith and Christianity and was executed outside the Flaminian Gate on February 14, 269. However, other tales of St. Valentine's life claim he was executed either in the year 269, 270, 273 or 280. Other depictions of St. Valentine's arrests tell that he secretly married couples so husbands wouldn't have to go to war. Another variation of the legend of St. Valentine says he refused to sacrifice to pagan gods, was imprisoned and while imprisoned he healed the jailer's blind daughter. On the day of his ex*****on, he left the girl a note signed, "Your Valentine."

Pope Julius I is said to have built a church near Ponte Mole in his memory, which for a long time gave name to the gate now called Porta del Popolo, formerly, Porta Valetini.

The romantic nature of Valentine's Day may have derived during the Middle Ages, when it was believed that birds paired couples in mid-February. According to English 18th-century antiquarians Alban Butler and Francis Douce, Valentine's Day was most likely created to overpower the pagan holiday, Lupercalia.

Although the exact origin of the holiday is not widely agreed upon, it is widely recognized as a day for love, devotion and romance.

Whoever he was, Valentine did really exist, because archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to St. Valentine. In 496 AD Pope Gelasius marked February 14th as a celebration in honor of his martyrdom.

Relics of St. Valentine can be found all over the world. A flower-crowned skull of St. Valentine can be found in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome. In 1836, other relics were exhumed from the catacombs of Saint Hippolytus on the Via Tiburtina and were identified as Valentine's. These were transported for a special Mass dedicated to those young and in love.

Fr. John Spratt received a gift from Pope Gregory XVI in 1836 contianing a "small vessel tinged" with St. Valentine's blood. This gift now stands placed in Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin, Ireland.

Other alleged relics were found in Prague in the Church of St Peter and Paul at Vysehrad; in the parish church of St. Mary's Assumption in Chelmno Poland; at the reliquary of Roquemaure in France; in the Stephansdom in Vienna; in Balzan in Malta and also in Blessed John Duns Scotus' church in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, Scotland.

St. Valentine is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travellers, and young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses and his feast day is celebrated on February 14.

Ang mga walang salapi ay kumuha rito at bumili ng pagkain. Halikayo at bumili ng alak at gatas, bumili kayo, ngunit walang bayad. Bakit ginugugol ang salapi sa mga bagay na hindi nakabubusog? Bakit inuubos ang pera
sa mga bagay na walang halaga? Makinig kayo sa akin at sundin ang utos ko at matitikman ninyo ang pinakamasarap na pagkain. Minamahal kong mga kapatid:
Inaaring mga anak ng Diyos ang sumasampalatayang si Hesus ang Mesiyas; at sinumang umiibig sa Ama ay umiibig din sa mga anak. Ito ang palatandaang iniibig natin ang mga anak ng Diyos: kapag iniibig natin ang Diyos at tinutupad ang kanyang mga utos, sapagkat ang tunay na umiibig sa Diyos ay yaong tumutupad ng kanyang mga utos. At hindi naman mahirap sundin ang kanyang mga utos, sapagkat napagtatagumpayan ng bawat anak ng Diyos ang sanlibutan; at nagtatagumpay tayo sa pamamagitan ng pananampalataya. Sino ang makapagtatagumpay laban sa sanlibutan? Ang sumasampalatayang si Hesus ang Anak ng Diyos.

Si Hesukristo ang naparito sa sanlibutan, bininyagan sa tubig, at nagbubo ng kanyang dugo sa kanyang kamatayan – hindi lamang bininyagan sa tubig kundi nagbubo pa ng kanyang dugo. Ang Espiritu ang nagpapatotoo tungkol dito, sapagkat ang Espiritu ay katotohanan. Tatlo ang nagpapatotoo: ang Espiritu, ang tubig, at ang dugo; at nagkakaisa ang tatlong ito. Tinatanggap natin ang patotoo ng tao, ngunit lalong matibay ang patotoo ng Diyos, at iyon ang patotoo ng Diyos tungkol sa kanyang Anak.

Ang Mabuting Balita ng Panginoon ayon kay San Marcos

Noong panahong iyon, sinasabi ni Juan Bautista sa kanyang pangangaral: “Darating na kasunod ko ang isang makapangyarihan kaysa sa akin: ni hindi ako karapat-dapat magkalag ng tali ng kanyang mga panyapak. Binibinyagan ko kayo sa tubig, ngunit bibinyagan niya kayo sa Espiritu Santo.”

Hindi nagluwat, dumating si Hesus mula sa Nazaret, Galilea, at siya’y bininyagan ni Juan sa Ilog-Jordan. Pagkaahung-pagkaahon ni Hesus sa tubig ay nakita niyang nabuksan ang kalangitan, at bumababa sa kanya ang Espiritu na gaya ng isang kalapati. At isang tinig ang nagmula sa langit: “Ikaw ang minamahal kong Anak, lubos kitang kinalulugdan.”

Ang Bayan ng Diyos nawa’y maging malinis sa Binyag upang magtamasa ng kalayaan at dignidad bilang mga anak ng Diyos. Manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang kalayaan at karangalan ng bawat mamamayan nawa’y pangalagaan at igalang ng bansa sa pamamagitan ng pagpapatupad ng mga programang mag-aangat sa kalidad ng buhay. Manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Ang mga pamilya at mga pamayanan nawa’y tunay na maranasan ang kanilang pagiging iisa sa pamamagitan ng kanilang buhay at pagpapahayag ng pananampalataya. Manalangin tayo sa Panginoon.

Diyos na aming Ama, ginawa kaming mga tagapagmana ng iyong Kaharian sa pamamagitan ni Jesus na iyong Anak. Loobin mo na sa pananalangin namin para sa isa’t isa ay manahin namin ang Kahariang iyon kung saan ikaw ay nabubuhay at naghahari magpasawalang hanggan. Amen.

Feast of THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

Today is the feast day of the Holy Family, but also every family's feast day, since the Holy Family is the patron and model of all Christian families. Today should be a huge family feast, since it is devoted entirely to the Holy Family as a model for the Christian family life. As Rev. Fr. Edward Sutfin states:

"The children must learn to see in their father the foster-father St. Joseph, and the Blessed Mother as the perfect model for their own mother. The lesson to be learned is both practical and theoretical, in that the children must learn how to obey and to love their parents in thought, word and action, just as Christ was obedient to Mary and Joseph. Helping mother in the kitchen and in the house work, and helping father in his odd jobs about the home thus take on a new significance by being performed in a Christ-like spirit."

WHEN WILL THE WORLD END?

Last Thursday, the people of Tacloban and nearby towns thought it was the end of the world. Several months ago when the 7.2 earthquakes hit Bohol, the ground was shaking and the mountains were grumbling, they thought it was the end of the world.

When will the world end? The answer is: after you have taken your last breath --- it is your end of the world. Whether the sun is shining or if it is raining, the moment you take your last breath, it will be your end. Some people will be going without you knowing just as some people are being born without your knowledge so when you will go it will not be announced.

But for some, even though they are still breathing, walking and eating the world has already ended. When they fail their exams, when someone turns down their marriage proposal, when they are not accepted for work, when they lose hope, it is the end of the world for them. Kaya ang mga iba, tumatalon sa building, nagpapasagasa, sinasalubong a LRT.

There is a big difference between the end of the world and the end of life. The moment you die, it is the end of the world but it does not mean it is the end of life. In death, life doesn’t end; it simply changes from mortal to immortal.

When is the end of the world? After the judgment when you will be thrown to the place called Hades or the place called hell where it will be end of life for you. For those who will be welcomed by God to His eternal kingdom, life continues. The world will end but it doesn’t mean your life will end with it.

Always ask yourself where you want to spend eternity. The fundamental question is not when or how the world will end but it was the question asked by the rich young man, “Good teacher what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Hindi sapat na ginagawa natin ang tama. If you are donating things that you do not need, it is a decent way of throwing them away.

Pag-uwi mo, may kakainin kang mainit. Sa kanila, hanggang ngayon, hindi pa alam kung may kakainin sila. Sabi nga ng iba, “Mabuti sana namatay na lang ako.” Yan ang sinasabing losing hope. They are alive but they have already lost hope.

Lord, don’t make us too rich that we might forget you; but please don’t make us too poor that we might curse you. There is no one poorer than those who have lost their loved ones.

Let us not only provide for their material needs. Let us pray as a church that they will hold on to the faithfulness of God.

instead of DRESSING UP AS GHOULS, ZOMBIES, OR MONSTERS...

IS IT NOT BETTER TO KNOW THEM AND LET OTHERS KNOW MORE ABOUT THEM OR REMEMBER THE CITIZENS OF HEAVEN - THE SAINTS instead of those in HELL?
