Lately I have been seeing more patients forgetting to wear masks inside a medical facility.

I get it. C0v1d numbers are down. Masks are inconvenient, hot, fogs glasses etc. And the government has mandated that these are optional.

HOWEVER, you go to a medical facility for a health issue and chances are that other people go also for health issues, not necessarily c0v1d related but may possibly be transmitted via the air.

Would you really want to get the microbes 🦠 from the other patients? Or you, as the patient, would you want to spread microbes by simply breathing?

I also realize that since mask wearing became mandatory during the lockdown, I actually get sick less, maybe because I am protected from the patients in the facility who may have respiratory related diseases.

Last I checked, it’s still mandatory in medical facilities here in the Philippines but even if it were not, it would still be prudent to wear them in hospitals and other medical facilities.

Myth or facts?

“Sleeping with wet hair will cause you to go blind”. - myth

“Washing the face while you’re tired will lead to eye problems.” - myth

“Children get errors of refraction because of standing too close to the TV” - myth

Are you surprised? More on this later!

Computer related eye issues are mainly because of dryness AND fatigue. Fatigue is mainly due to glare and the fact that computer/gadget distance is near, which is more work for the eye muscles.

Before you go out and buy anything, check your habits while using computer/gadgets.

1. BLINK! We get dry eyes when the blink rate decreases, which happens when we are occupied with our computer work.

2. 20-20-20 rule. There’s a reason for this. Look at far (20 feet away) for 20 secs after every 20 minutes of work. (I am actually stricter pa for patients i see sa clinic but ito ang basic). Tip: set a timer!

3. Make sure you have good ambiant light. Natural daylight is still best.

4. Decrease screen brightness to lessen work on the muscles of the eye, but increase contrast and increase font size. Use dark mode if available.

DO THESE BEFORE YOU SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY! 😆

If you have symptoms despite all these measures maybe you would want to check with an eye care professional like me.

We will give you personalized advice based on findings on YOU. I don’t give a 1-size-fits-all advice sa clinic. For example — to wear or not to wear your glasses at the computer? Depends pa din on your grade and if you are already at the age needing reading glasses. It varies from person to person. Even degree of dryness may be different due to pther factors. Also you’d want to check if you also have other undiscovered eye issues.

Oh, and don’t assume kids got their refraction because of gadgets. So far it has not been proven. But DO reduce screen time because these cause other developmental issues as well.

In general, we do advise against buying online eye meds and eye devices because we don’t know if they are right for you.

Because of the current surge with the all time high positivity rate, we are limiting our face to face clinic hours and seeing only urgent (but not emergency) patients on a “by appointment” basis. Emergencies will be diverted to the ER if absolutely needed.

This is to limit exposure for both doctors and patients.

Teleconsultation is still open and is recommended at this time. Kindly send a pm or use the booking link to set appointments.

Yesterday was 1 year to the day when ECQ was declared. And we “celebrated “ by getting vaccinated!

When it becomes available, have yourself protected as well. It’s an additional layer of protection in our battle against the dreaded virus.

But...still practice the usual safety protocols. Wear well fitting masks, wash hands, disinfect and observe physical distancing.
