WHAT DOES VISION LOOK LIKE WITH DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?
Diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms in its early stages. Symptoms develop as it gets worse. A person with worsening diabetic retinopathy will see spots or dark strings (โfloatersโ), have blurred vision, have blank or dark areas in field of vision, see flashes of light, have poor night vision and poor color vision, with colors appearing faded or washed out.
If you have diabetes, consult an ophthalmologist.

WHAT HAPPENS IF CATARACTS ARE LEFT UNTREATED?
If left untreated, cataracts will continue to worsen over time resulting in continual reduction of vision and worsening quality of life. Many people with untreated cataracts become legally blind. If left untreated for long periods, cataracts can cause total blindness.
Ask an ophthalmologist for more information about cataracts.

WHEN TO HAVE CATARACTS REMOVED
Cataracts can be removed only with surgery. But you donโt have to remove a cataract if your cataract symptoms are not bothering you very much. Your ophthalmologist can prescribe a new pair of eyeglasses to help you see better.
However, when cataracts prevent you from doing things you want or need to do and interfere with your daily activities, you should consider cataract surgery. Ask an ophthalmologist for more information about cataract surgery.

WEAR SUNGLASSES
August is Sight Saving Month. Protect your vision from harmful ultraviolet rays by wearing sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV-A rays and UV-B rays. Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses delays cataract formation and prevents retinal damage.
Sunglasses also protect the delicate eyelid skin to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer around the eye, as well as cancerous and non-cancerous growths on the eye.

EAT RIGHT FOR EYE HEALTH
For optimal eye health, your daily diet should include citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables and cold-water fish (e.g. mackerel, herring, salmon, anchovies, canned light tuna and sardines). These foods are rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, which are good for eye health as well as general health.

WHAT CAUSES CATARACTS?
Aging is the most common cause of cataracts. People over age 60 usually start to develop some clouding of their lenses. Other reasons why a person develops cataracts include family history; having diabetes; suffering an eye injury, undergoing eye surgery, and receiving radiation treatments on the upper body; prolonged sun exposure without sunglasses; and corticosteroid use.
Talk to an ophthalmologist for more information about cataracts.

LUBRICATING EYE DROPS FOR EYE STRAIN
Lubricating eye drops or artificial tears add moisture to the eyes to relieve discomfort due to eye strain. You can buy lubricating eye drops without a prescription. There are many available brands, but no single brand works best for all types of dry eye. You may have to try a few different brands to find the one that works best for your eyes.
If your eye strain persists, consult an ophthalmologist.

WHAT IS ACCOMMODATIVE SPASM?
When you read, your eyes focus on the book or computer screen near your face. After you stop reading and look up, your eye should stop focusing. In an accommodative spasm, the eye does not stop focusing. As a result, the eyeโs vision stays focused on the close object, causing blurry vision at other distances.
Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information on accommodative spasm.

WHAT CAUSES HYPEROPIA?
Hyperopia or farsightedness occurs when the eyeball of a farsighted person is shorter than normal. This makes light rays focus beyond the retina instead of on it. As a result, a person with hyperopia sees distant objects somewhat clearly but near objects will appear fuzzier. Some of the people with farsighted vision experience headache and eye strain.
Consult your ophthalmologist if you experience symptoms and ask for more information on the causes of hyperopia.

WHAT IS HYPEROPIA?
Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, is an eye focusing disorder in which distant objects look somewhat clear, but close objects appear more blurred. With hyperopia, the eye does not bend or refract light properly to a single focus to see images clearly. But for the people with severe hyperopia, their vision can be fuzzy for objects at any distance.
Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information on hyperopia.
