WAYS TO PREVENT GLAUCOMA
If youβre at high risk, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam to catch glaucoma early and start treatment. Even if youβre not at high risk, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam by age 40. Prescription eye drops can stop glaucoma from progressing. Your ophthalmologist will recommend how often to return for follow-up exams. Maintain a healthy weight. Control your blood pressure. Be physically active. Avoid smoking. Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

FACTS ABOUT CATARACTS
A cataract is a condition in which the natural lens of your eyes becomes cloudy, causing your vision to be blurry or hazy. The most common cause is aging, which causes normal eye changes after age 40. Vision changes caused by cataracts include blurry vision, seeing double or a ghosted image, extra sensitivity to light, difficulty seeing well at night or needing more light when you read, and seeing bright colors as faded or yellow instead.
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information about cataracts.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye.
In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Symptoms develop when the condition gets worse. These include seeing more and more floaters (spots in your vision), having blurred vision, having vision that changes sometimes from blurry to clear, having poor night vision, having blank or dark areas in your field of vision, noticing colors appear faded or washed out, and losing vision.
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

βπ
WHAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT FOR CONJUNCTIVITIS?
Treatment depends on the type of sore eyes you have. There is no specific treatment for viral conjunctivitis, as your immune system will fight the virus on its own. You may place a cool, wet washcloth over your eyes to ease the discomfort. Your ophthalmologist may prescribe antibiotic eye drops for bacterial conjunctivitis. For allergic conjunctivitis, your ophthalmologist may recommend certain eye drops or ointment.
Talk to your eye doctor for more information.

VISION PROBLEMS WITH CATARACTS
Cataracts, a prevalent eye condition, arise when the natural lens of the eyes becomes clouded, leading to a range of vision problems. This cloudiness manifests as blurriness or haziness, akin to peering through a foggy or dusty car windshield. The gradual onset of cataracts can compromise one's ability to perceive details clearly, affecting daily activities such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces.
If you notice any changes in your vision or experience these symptoms, it is crucial to consult with your ophthalmologist promptly.

WHAT IS RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY?
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease in some premature babies born before 31 weeks. A full-term pregnancy is about 38 to 42 weeks. With ROP, abnormal blood vessels grow on the babyβs retina, which can cause serious eye and vision problems later. ROP may go away on its own as an infant grows. However, the growing infant should be seen by an ophthalmologist regularly. Sometimes, urgent treatment is needed to prevent blindness.
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on ROP.

Eye Care Tips for Gen-Z and Millennials
Most eye problems are preventable with simple healthy habits. So if you're in your 20s or 30s, now is exactly the time you should be taking steps to prevent future vision loss:
β
Know your family history. Diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration are hereditary (run in the family).
β
When outdoors always wear sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation, and wear them even on cloudy days. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can damage the cornea and the lens and eventually lead to cataracts and eye cancers.
β
If you smoke, quit. Smoking increases the risk for eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

EYE CARE TIPS FOR THE RAINY SEASON
The rainy season is here, and aside from floods, it also brings the risk of water-born infections that can affect your eyes. Here are some eye care tips for the rainy season:
β
Avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands; wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
β
Wear wraparound sunglasses or protective goggles when you step outside to protect your eyes from being splashed with rain water.
β
Rain increases moisture indoors and outdoors. So, make sure to store your contact lens, eye make-up and other eye products in a dry place.

GLAUCOMA AWARENESS FOR SIGHT SAVING MONTH!
Glaucoma is a disease that usually occurs when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. The extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve. There are two major types. Open-angle glaucoma, the most common, happens gradually. It is painless and causes no vision changes at first. As the disease progresses, blind spots develop in your peripheral vision. Angle-closure glaucoma is a true emergency requiring immediate medical attention to prevent blindness. Early symptoms include blurred vision, halos, mild headaches or eye pain.
