What makes you effective as a leader is not the title you hold. Rather it’s demonstrating an unrelenting focus on helping others succeed in their collective efforts.

Many people believe leadership is something that’s conferred along with a title or attained when you direct a team of people, but true leadership is never about authority or power, according to Lolly Daskal. It’s about helping others grow, and that’s something anyone can do.

If you desire to influence and have an impact on others, you have leadership qualities. And if you can inspire people to do something they thought they couldn’t do, demonstrate how the impossible is possible, believe in someone when they didn’t believe in themselves, you’re already a leader.

Let me share with you this powerful quote.

“If you want to achieve something different, you have to do something different.”

In other words, if you want to achieve what you’ve never achieved, you have to do what you’ve never done before.

That includes making sacrifices.

If your life is not what you want it to be right now, you have to be willing to do something different.

Getting out of your comfort zone.

And this is never going to be easy.

But when you believe in yourself, you start to think big.

When you increase the size of your dreams, you automatically increase what’s possible in your life.

If you believe you could become rich even if you grew up in poverty, then you will become rich.

Friend, learn the mindsets of successful people.

Hear me out.

Every meaningful thing is boring.

Like fruits and veggies.

But if you want to be healthy, you’ll eat more of them.

Soda drinks are fun and fast food is nice.

But if you love your health, you’ll run away from them. Right?

TV is fun.

But if you want to escape poverty, you’ll spend more time learning.

Let’s not make excuses.

Like what I said, sugar is fun.

Same with excuses. That’s why most people love making it.

But here’s the thing.

You can come up with hundreds of reasons why you are where you are.

And you can come up with a single reason why you need to be somewhere else.

The difference is in the way you use a powerful machine called the brain.

Your choice.

Smaller steps 🦶

'm a bit of a worrywart. Ok, a lot of one. I'm known to plan for the worst while hoping for the best. Anyone else?

It is wise to make a plan and prepare for many different types of scenarios in a job search.

However, it's not healthy to only be hyper-focused on worst-case scenarios. Thinking negatively can make you feel negative, and these emotions will start to bleed into your actions and communications.

People you speak to and engage with will start to sense your negative emotions.

I know it's not always easy, but try to flip the script.

Take action to protect your mental health when you feel overwhelmed, angry, frustrated, or burnt out by job search by trying these 6 things:

1. Thinking UP

Pay attention to your thoughts and self-talk. When you notice negative statements popping into your mind, replace them with something more positive. Reframe the situation, focusing on the wins a new opportunity brings.

2. Taking Care of Yourself

Resist the urge to spend all your free time seeking out your next opportunity and focus on your well-being. Carve out time for the things you enjoy.

3. Spending Time with Positive People

Choose your company wisely. Spend time with optimistic people who bring you up and help you stay motivated and inspired. Reach out to your network, set up coffee dates, seek out other job seekers, or consider hiring a mentor or coach.

4. Switching Things Up

Variety is the spice of life! Try something new in your job search, switch up your resume, try a new way of networking, attend a virtual conference, or volunteer to be an expert speaker.

5. Embracing Small Wins

Sometimes a goal of 'getting a job' is overwhelming. This large goal only gets achieved at the very end. Instead, break down activities into smaller, more achievable tasks. Celebrate the day's small wins like meeting targets, making a new connection, or penning a great outreach email.

6. Imaging the Best

Not always easy, but like the image below suggests....what if things turn out exactly as you want? Focus on your goal. Imagine it happening. Aim to stay positive.

You have the freedom to work elsewhere as long as there is an internet connection.

I've found that when it comes to resumes, most job seekers fall into one of 3-camps. I might ruffle a few feathers, but these are the pros and cons of each choice.

1.𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐈𝐘𝐞𝐫
- This is obviously the most budget-conscious option. This can be a great path if you know yourself well, are clear on your targets and you have the time to invest in writing a quality document.

If you choose to go down the DIY path, here are some tips to make your job easier:
- Consider buying a professionally designed template (price: $10-25). I did a poll and found that the average DIY spent over 5 hours on formatting their documents. This could save you time and ensure that you have an ATS-friendly doc
- Familiarize yourself with modern resume strategies. Make sure that you understand the importance of keywords. I've included a few videos in the comments that will help.
- Learn how to write result-rich resume statements. I've got a tool in the comments that can help.

2. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞-𝐟𝐨𝐫-𝐲𝐨𝐮 -𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞
This person is most likely going to be disappointed in the outcome. There are websites--owned by venture capital firms-- who have figured out a way to crank out resumes quickly and affordably.... but not well. Top Resume, one of the worst offenders. I can't tell you how many job seekers I've talked to over the years who have fallen victim to a $200 or $400 "executive resume" from resume mills.

If you choose to go down the "budget done-for-you-resume" path, consider 1) how much time they are telling you they will spend on your documents 2) Divide that time by the price paid and consider if that's a living wage for a professional. A well-written resume for a mid-career professional will take an experienced resume writer 8-12 hours to write. An executive resume can take anywhere between 12-20+ hours to research/write/format/edit/etc.

If you are budget conscious but want support, my advice is to take the DIY approach and then pay a professional resume writer to review your document and give you actionable feedback.

3. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞
This person realizes that "it's hard to read the label when you are inside the jar" and has the funds to outsource or understands the value of having a professional guide them through the process.

If you choose this path, my advice is to find a provider who takes the time to do an intake call and will really learn your story. It helps to talk out your experiences and have someone else help you unearth your results.

There are many wonderful resume writers-- before selecting a writer, check out their samples on their website. Make sure that you like their approach and style. There are different design philosophies-- you need to pick the writer who aligns with yours.

Our responsibility to the younger generations is to educate them. 👍

Never consider your life and experiences to be in vain. There will come a moment when your journey will serve as an inspiration for others.

Content is the oxygen that creates awareness around what you're doing.

It’s no secret that we are living in an era where everybody is a media company.

This is something I have said time and time again, and I will continue to push it because I truly believe that content is the best way to market a product today.

Provide value to consumers by creating helpful videos or new recipes or funny cartoons. Give them something they actually want because that content builds up the relationship that then allows you to ask for the sale.
