Visual Communication Student is UE Artist of the Year!
A Visual Communication student of the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD) was awarded as the UE Artist of the Year for the recently concluded school year 2023-2024.
Angelo Miguel “Ulap” Chua, a fourth-year UE Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) major in Visual Communication student, earned the distinction last May 7 during the UE Caloocan Recognition Program for the year. Mr. Chua was one of 24 UE CFAD students recognized for their exceptional talent in local and international art competitions.
Ulap Chua is the current president of the UE CFAD’s Buklod Sining Organization, which was recently awarded Outstanding College Organization for Arts and Culture by the UNESCO Clubs of the Philippines. As a Malabon-based budding performance and image-maker, Mr. Chua’s practice of art, filmmaking, and photography has been immensely influenced by the performance medium due to his theater and performance art roots. He sees performance or social events as ephemeral in nature, like ghostly apparitions that are impermanent and expeditious. He aims to counter this ephemerality through his works, which strive to immortalize various narratives and cultures.
Mr. Chua had participated as the lone Filipino and Southeast Asian artist in the prestigious EDEN***** Studios in Berlin, Germany, from January 8 to 12, 2024, for the international workshop titled “Physicality in Acting” under the New International Performing Arts Institute (NIPAI). This marks the second international residency program for Mr. Chua, who is currently working on his capstone short film project, ‘Wala ng Bukas,’ as a writer and director.
Aside from this international accolade and recently acquired scholarship, Mr. Chua’s recent artistic endeavors include being selected as one of the 11 recipients of the New Face Photographer Award at the Ulsan International Environmental Photography Festival 2023 in South Korea, where he exhibited his striking series, ‘Ang Banyuhay ng Dalamhati.’ He also attended the two-week 27th BIFAN NAFF Fantastic Film School: Everything Everywhere All at Home Program in South Korea in 2023. Additionally, he was selected as one of the eight artists for the Tokyo Festival Farm-Asian Performing Arts Camp 2022 in Japan, where his project ‘ANIMOー応援ー’ was developed. The live performance-film hybrid recently premiered at the Film Development Council-Academedia screening.
Locally, he has made waves as the Editor and Director of Photography for the Cultural Center of the Philippines. This via Performatura’s Lam-Ang Indak at Hiraya ng Pagsinta and Super Kartero, a 2022 film-theater hybrid that premiered at the RYP PH Kolaboratoryo Festival. He also recently started a series of visual works titled ‘Visualized Biomechanics’ for the ‘Atip’ Balai Maria Exhibition in Intramuros. He has participated as a recognized performance artist at the annual International Solidarity in Performance Art Festival since 2019. His latest experimental film, ‘ROD,’ became one of six finalists in the experimental film category of the SinePiyu Film Festival, and it not only reached the finals but also won the Special Citation for the Experimental Film Award.
Mr. Chua is set to travel to Austria for an international art residency program this month, as he has been awarded a full scholarship for the NIPAI 2024 Laboratory and IUGTE Conference at Laubegg Castle, Austria, by ArtUniverse.org, an organization established to support creative people around the world who study and work in performing arts, theatre directing, and multi-disciplinary arts.
Congratulations, kudos and keep up the stellar work, Award-winning Warrior Artist!

*Policy on Re-implementation of Vehicle Sticker and New UE Parking Guidelines Issued*
In line with the limited parking space on the University’s campuses, members of the UE community—covering UE Manila and UE Caloocan, inclusive of the UE Manila Annex—are hereby advised of the following general policy and guidelines in regard to on-campus parking and related matters for school year 2024-2025.
Please note that these guidelines cover four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles alike.
1. Application Period:
Faculty members and employees of both the Manila and Caloocan Campuses may apply for their UE parking sticker starting this week. Applications will be ongoing until the stickers last but not later than July 31, 2024.*
UE Caloocan students may apply for a parking sticker starting on August 1, 2024—the first day of UE classes for school year 2024-2025—until the stickers last but not later than August 31, 2024.
The application form for the parking sticker is available at the Security Office—near the Gastambide gate in UE Manila and near the Samson Road gate in UE Caloocan.
* Faculty members and employees with more than one vehicle may be allowed to apply for a maximum of three parking stickers BUT ONLY ONE of their vehicles (be they four-wheeled or two-wheeled) will be allowed to park on campus at any given time.
2. Sticker Fee:
The parking sticker is to be applied for by qualified UE constituents intending to park their vehicle on campus on any school day. The one-time fee for this is P1,000.00 covering the entire school year 2024-2025.
Kindly be advised that the planned drop-off/pick-up sticker, meanwhile, is suspended pending further review of the traffic flow on and around the campuses within school year 2024-2025.
Vehicles entering UE Caloocan with no parking stickers shall only be allowed at the designated drop-off/pick-up point at the Caloocan Campus. Vehicles without UE parking stickers will not be allowed to enter the Manila Campus or the Annex Building.
Related requirements and other payment details may be read in the application form and must be strictly observed by all vehicle sticker applicants.
3. First Come, First Served Parking and Inclusive Hours:
Due to the limited parking slots on campus, vehicles with an official UE parking sticker for SY 2024-2025 are not necessarily assured of a parking slot on a given day as parking is on a first come, first served basis.
Parking on campus is from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. only. Overnight parking is not allowed except in extremely meritorious cases and subject to internal approval.
4. Security Concerns:
UE vehicle stickers are to be affixed only by authorized UE Security Office personnel and not by the vehicle owners or their relatives or proxies.
All vehicles coming into the campuses may be subject to inspection by the University’s security personnel prior to entry and to check for such instances as any door that might be left ajar or head or tail lights that might be left on.
The University shall not be liable for any loss or damage to any vehicle on campus arising from incidents outside of the aforesaid guidelines.
5. Important Reminders:
Possession of a parking sticker is a privilege conferred by the University upon the holder. This privilege may be subject to cancellation at any time if the holder violates any of the traffic and other rules and regulations issued in connection with its use.
The UE vehicle sticker is non-transferable and valid for school year 2024-2025 only.

Fresh UE SHS Cal. Grad is 2024 National Discipline Awardee!
Miss Dorothy Faye D. Dela Cruz of UE Senior High School-Caloocan has been recognized as one of the recipients of the Alfonso Yuchengco (AY) Foundation, Inc. National Discipline Award for 2024!
Miss Dela Cruz, who received the award in early June 2024, was a Humanities and Social Sciences Strand student of the UE Basic Education Department-Caloocan who was among those who were part of the recent UE SHS Caloocan commencement rites of school year 2023-2024 held last Thursday afternoon, June 20, 2024, at the PICC Plenary Hall.
Established in 1990, the AY National Discipline Award is an annual recognition given to graduating high school students who exemplify the virtues of discipline, integrity, courage, and self-sacrifice in the school setting and in the community.
Miss Dela Cruz was the Class President of her Grade 12 section, HUMSS 12-1, and an active member of UE SHS Caloocan’s Student Discipline Monitors (SDM). She is reputed to have consistently shown dedication to serving her fellow students and teachers during her academic years at the University of the East-Caloocan.
UE BED Caloocan has been a witness to Ms. Dela Cruz’s zeal in and commitment to her academic pursuits as she participated in an array of competitions and events on- and off-campus. She guided her group as lead researcher in their oral presentation at UE Caloocan’s 5th Punlasik Research Conference, sharing and discussing the effects of artificial intelligence on the integrity of SHS students. Last April 20, she joined the National Business Law Conference (NBLC) Case Competition at the Ateneo de Manila University, where her UE group was declared Champion. In another event this past May, she bagged 2nd Place in the Husay ng Soksay Photography competition hosted by the Sociology Society of the UP Los Baños.
Miss Dela Cruz’s UE SHS adviser, Mr. Roger Christopher R. Reyes, says that, “Dorothy is motivated and passionate about what she does. She substantially articulates her thoughts in class discussions and willingly extends help to classmates in need. As her teacher in three subjects, I have seen many instances of her coaching classmates, especially in research class, and sharing her notes when exams were drawing near. She has been compliant, responsible, and a role model to her classmates, always abiding by school rules and regulations. Colleagues share the same feedback about her—a testament to her character and good upbringing.”
The AY Foundation National Discipline Award aims to pursue former Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco’s mission to instill discipline and good virtues among the nation’s youth. It fosters and encourages dedication to uplift the community and the country. Awardees are given a medal and cash prize.
Before Miss Dela Cruz, UE BED Caloocan had produced five earlier recipients of the same award: Aaron T. Eser in 2019, Jeric R. Cruz in 2020, Rogene Graciella R. Sadian in 2021, Antonia Q. Buyser in 2022, and Anton Luis A. Cruz in 2023.
Congratulations, Humanista and Warrior SHS Graduate!
