Overcoming an early scare, Thomasian pole vaulter EJ Obiena is advancing to the final round of the men's pole vault event at the .

Ranked world No. 2, Obiena, who placed 11th in the Tokyo Olympics, aspires to become the first Filipino athlete in 88 years to win a medal in athletics.

This 19th century photograph of the UST Physics Lab from the Biblioteca Nacional de España is best seen with Rizal's description from Chapter 13 of El Filibusterismo:
"...a day of the year was set aside to visit the mysterious laboratory and to admire from outside the enigmatic apparatuses placed inside the cabinets; no one could complain; on that day could be seen such brass, much glass, many tubes, discs, wheels, bells, etc...The laboratory had been set up to be shown to the guests and the high officials who came from the Peninsula, so that upon seeing them they could shake their heads with satisfaction...and the guests...would later write in their travel memoirs that the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas de Manila...possessed a magnificent Physics laboratory for the teaching of the youth..."
Rizal's is one side of the story. For the contrary, I highly recommend Fr. Fidel Villaroel's "Rizal in UST" (1984, reprinted 2020). While Rizal's university grades are not impressive compared to his Ateneo high school grades, Fr. Villaroel shows that he still was at the top of his class, suggesting that he was not racially discriminated.

412 years ago, the University of Santo Tomas was established. With the original campus located in Intramuros, the Walled City of Manila, UST was first called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario, and later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas, in memory of the foremost Dominican Theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas.
