SAN EZEQUIEL MORENO, MISIONERO

Ezequiel was born in Alfaro, Spain, on 9 April 1848. He joined the Recollect Congregation of the Order in Monteagudo (Navarra) in 1864, and professed vows on 22 September 1865. He was sent to the Philippines in 1870 where was ordained in 1871 and where he labored for 15 years. He then returned to Spain to serve as prior in Monteagudo for three years, after which he gave all of his energy to various forms of ministry in Colombia, South America, until shortly before his death.

During his time in the Philippines, he was assigned to Mindoro, Palawan, Las Piñas, Santo Tomas (Batangas), Santa Cruz (Manila), and the Recoleto Hacienda in Imus and Bacoor where the faithful in this town bore witness to his holiness and dedication to pastoral mission that protests were made by people not to let him leave when he was about to be transferred.

He is hailed, along with San Peregrino, to be patron of people with cancer.

San Ezequiel Moreno, ruega por nosotros!

We greet our brother Augustinian Recollects at the Province of St. Ezekiel Moreno a blessed solemnity of their titular and patron!

SANTA CLARA DE LA CRUZ DE MONTEFALCO

Today, the Augustinian family celebrates the feast of Santa Clara de la Cruz de Montefalco. She was born in Montefalco, Perusa, Italy in the year 1268. At six years old, she entered the hermitage just outside the walls of her hometown where here sister, Juana, lived with great austerity with some religious sisters. In the year 1290, the hermitage was converted into an Augustinian convent and made her profession there taking the name of Clare of the Cross. After the death of her sister, Juana, she was elected as abess of the convent until her death.

Throughout her life, Clare devoted herself in reflecting the mysteries of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. In her last days, she always mentioned that she keeps the cross of Christ embedded on her heart. Upon her death, her heart was exhumed and was found that a crucifix, the symbols and marks of the passion of our Lord, were present.

Santa Clara de la Cruz de Montefalco, ruega por nosotros!

Featured in this post is the venerated image of Santa Clara de Montefalco in her parish in Pasay. The church was administered by the Augustinian Fathers of our province when it was established as a parish in 1864 with Fray Simon Barroso as the first parish priest. It was later ceded to the administration of the Archdiocese of Manila in the early part of the 20th century.

The Augustinians and the community hailed her as the patroness of the church of Pineda. Santa Clara de Montefalco is also the patroness of the city of Pasay.

| SAN ROQUE DE MAMBOG OF MALOLOS, BULACAN

The image of San Roque de Mambog is one of the oldest images of San Roque in the Philippines whose origins trace back to 1599 when Fray Roque de Barrionuevo placed the image in the Barrio of Mambog. The entry reads as:

"The patronage of the Concepción de Nuestra Señora. It has three parishes which are: Matingbo, under the titular head of La Cruz because of a miraculous cross it has in the town; Paombong, under Santiago Apóstol; and Mambog, under San Roque, whose image is located in this town that is one of the most devout and miraculous among these islands, as experienced by its residents and those throughout the region in their time of need. It is a tradition held by the elders that Fr. Roque de Barrionuevo placed it in the church of Mambog in 1599, when he was prior of the convent of Malolos, and it is worthy of pride that the image, being so old and having been exposed so long to inclement weather, the sun and rain, is still beautiful and its colors so alive that it seems not too long ago that it was repaired and restored, despite its never having been touched by human hands for any restoration work whatsoever."

The entry of Fray Gaspar de San Agustin described the colorful devotion of the people to San Roque and speaks of its miraculous intercession to them which has lasted to this day, 425 years since its enthronement in their humble barrio.

SAN ROQUE DE MONTPELLIER

The church celebrates today Saint Roch or more famously known as San Roque. Not much of his life was known as there are uncertainties on the account of his life. Nevertheless, this did not deter the devotion of the people to the saintly healer.

Roch was born of a noble family who distributed his worldy possessions among the poor upon the death of his parents. In entering the Third Order of Franciscans, Roch travelled to Italy to which its towns was stricken with plague. He then placed the sign of the cross and his hands among the sticken and were miraculously healed. When he began to fell ill, he retreated to the forest and lived in a thatched hut, he was then sustained by a dog who brought him bread everyday to which its owner upon knowing this incident decided to place Roch under his care until he was healed.

Arrested on the false accusation as a spy, he then died after 5 years of imprisonment. According to the Golden Legend, An angel brought down a tablet with letters of gold that inscribed: "Whoever would invoke Roch should be preserved from pestilence and contagious disease"

San Roque, ruega por nosotros!

SOLEMNIDAD DE LA ASUNCION DE LA VIRGEN

The church celebrates today with great solemnity the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary to heaven. Our dearest mother, after her earthly life, was assumed into heaven to be in the company of her Son. Our Lady, preserved from the stain of sin from the moment of her conception was also preserved from the corruption brought about by death. With great joy, the church celebrates this memory in the dogmatic proclamation by Pope Pius XII.

Virgen de la Asuncion, ruega por nosotros!

Featured is the venerated image of the Assumption of Our Lady from the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of the Assumption in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Santa Maria was founded by the Spanish Augustinian friars as a visita of Narvacan before 1710. Construction of the present church was started in 1765. It was declared an independent parish in 1769 under the advocation of the Our Lady of the Assumption. In 1810, the bell tower was built during the renovation of the church and furnished with a bell the following year. In 1822, the church and convent became a mission centre of the Augustinians to places such as Pidigan and La Paz in the province of Abra.

SANTO DOMINGO, LUZ DE LA SANTA IGLESIA

The church celebrates today Saint Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Order of Preachers. Born in Caleruega, Spain, Dominic lived a life dedicated to contemplation, charity, and preaching the gospel of salvation. While studying in university in Palencia, a famine struck. He sold all of his possessions to feed the hungry and the poor. He was also known to have fought against the Albigensian heresy that was prevalent at that time.

In establishing the Order of Preachers, Pope Innocent III was astonished in the petition to create a religious order dedicated to preaching. He then asked him to consult his friars to choose an exisiting rule. After the council, they presented to the Pope that they would follow the rule of Saint Augustine.

We greet our Dominican brethren in the Dominican Province of the Philippines a blessed feast of Saint Dominic.

Santo Domingo de Guzman, pray for us!

THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

Today, the church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In the Mountain of Tabor, our Lord transfigured in the presence of His apostles, Saints Peter, James, and John. Appearing also was Saints Elijah and Moses, a nod to the fulfillment of the Old Testament's prophecies and of the Mosaic law. It is interpreted that this moment in Jesus's life, the revelation of His eternal glory, was a foretaste of His resurrection.
