Mr. Marvin Piczon, Samar Provincial Tourism Officer, welcomes and acknowledges the guests, speakers, and participants.

The second day of the workshop delves into theoretical presentations and case studies on scenography, a crucial aspect of festival management, given by John Carlo Pagunaling, an Instructor of Theater Arts from University of the Philippines-Diliman. This is followed by a module on Music and Sound and its role in the festival, a topic of great relevance to our cultural celebrations and how it contributes to the atmosphere and overall experience of the attendees shared by Mr. Jethro Joaquin, a faculty member from Miriam College. Lastly, Mr. Ian Torqueza, the Theater Operations Supervisor from PETA PHINMA Theater, shared his technical expertise on lighting and its importance in creating an ambiance, setting the mood, and enhancing the overall experience of a festival.

Tandaya Festival is a provincial festival of Samar held every August; tandaya is an old name of Samar from the olden times.

Mr. Rhosam Prudenciado Jr., a multi-awarded and international dancer, facilitates the workshop on contemporary dance joined by Assoc. USTGS-CCCPET, Samar Province, culminates the Cultural Education Curriculum Project

The Samar Provincial Government, the longtime LGU partner of the University of Santo Tomas Graduate School Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics (USTGS-CCCPET), collaborates for a numerous project in the field of heritage research and education.

In 2021, the Samar Province Cultural Education Curriculum (SPCEC) project, a continuing utilization program of the cultural mapping of Samar Province, began despite the physical distance and barriers brought by the global pandemic. A composite team from the UST Institute of Religion and practitioners in the cultural education field headed by Prof. Joan Christi Bagaipo led the team with Assoc. Prof. Ma Sanita Quilatan, Assoc. Prof. Marites Redoña, Prof. Chito Sawit, Ms. Ricamela Palis, Ms. Cynthia Matas and Mr. Roland Peter Nicart. They worked together to develop the first contextualized cultural education curriculum framework in the country and province. The curriculum is based on the cultural mapping outputs in developing students' cultural competencies in Basic Education and Adult Education. It links the cultural competencies to the Essential Learning Competencies of the Department of Education that guide the development of culture-based learning modules.

In 2022, phase 2 of the project continued through the Culture-based Learning Module Writeshop guided by the SPCEC Framework for selected teachers from the Catbalogan Division, Calbayog Division, and Samar Division of Samar Province.

In 2023, the province-wide module writing competition was launched to widely tap the whole teacher population of the Samar Province as potential module writers. It used the SPCEC Framework as a basis for developing teaching-learning materials.

The curriculum developers team also served as members of the panel of judges for the module writing competition with 180 entries. Two other faculty members of the UST- Institute of Religion joined them in this project phase, namely, Asst. Prof. Claudita Yaranon and Asst. Prof. Ma. Cecilia Balajadia

During the culminating and awarding ceremony, Hon. Sharee Ann Tan, the Governor of Samar Province, known for her advocacy of cultural education, was in attendance. Dr Evelyn R. Fetalvero, the Regional Director VIII of the Department of Education, and Assoc Prof. Eric B. Zerrudo, PhD, the Project Director of SPCEC and USTGS-CCCPET Director, joined her. The event was held to recognize the hard work and dedication of a diverse group of teachers from the three divisions of Samar Province, who were presented with certificates, plaques of appreciation, and cash prizes.

Dr. Moises D. Labian, the Division Superintendent of the Division of Samar, affirmed the project's direction, outlining the integration of SPCEC modules into the K-12 curriculum and adult education modules starting the academic year 2024-2025.

UST, LGU Magalang partners for heritage-based redevelopment plans project

The University of Santo Tomas, led by the Graduate School Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics (USTGS-CCCPET), in collaboration with UST College of Architecture and UST Faculty of Arts and Letters, signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the drafting of the town plaza redevelopment plan and the conservation management plan of the Magalang Municipal Building.

Due to the rapid growth of Magalang town, the relics of heritage and history gradually erode and are almost on the verge of obsolescence and neglect. The site development plan of the core zone plaza and the municipal building's conservation management plan or CMP are crucial. The plan provides a road map on how to proceed, with systematic caution, when making decisions about intervention. The project is an off-shoot and utilization project after conducting the cultural mapping of Magalang facilitated by CCCPET and the Department of Education.

The MOA signing was joined by Mayor Ma. Lourdes Lacson, Councilor Norman Lacson and ENP Ryan Miranda from the Local Government of Magalang and UST Administrator, Prof. Michael Anthony Vasco, Ph.D.(Dean of the UST Graduate School), Ar. Rodolfo Ventura, MS Arch (Dean of the UST College of Architecture), Prof. Melanie Turingan, PhD, (Dean of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters), and Assoc. Prof. Eric B. Zerrudo, Ph.D., (Director of the UST Graduate School Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics (USTGS-CCCPET).

In response to this partnership with Magalang and to other heritage conservation and sustainable development projects, the USTGS-CCCPET also forged a research collaboration with the UST College of Architecture and the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters. The partnership is part of the Center's commitment to extend the multidisciplinary research opportunities in the University.

The signing was held last February 20, 2024, at the University of Santo Tomas Beato Angelico Building hosted by UST College of Architecture.
