Free Water for Tabak Troopers Marks Launch of Rehabilitated TABAK Water Refilling Station

CAMP SANG-AN, ZDS — The 1st Infantry Division led by Maj. Gen. Gabriel C. Viray III launches the newly rehabilitated TABAK Water Refilling Station at Camp Cesar L Sang-an, Upper Pulacan, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur on July 26.

The rehabilitation of this water refilling station reflects the division’s commitment to ensuring that all residents and personnel within the camp have access to clean and safe drinking water free of charge.

The command is fortunate to have a natural spring on its premises, discovered two years ago by former division commander Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio. This spring has been developed as a long-term solution to the camp's limited water supply and growing demand. The discovery led to the initiation of the "Tabak Spring Water" development project, which resulted in the establishment of the TABAK Water Refilling Station. Utilizing the spring proved to be the most cost-effective and sustainable solution for providing high-quality water.

Maj. Gen. Gabriel C. Viray III emphasized the importance of providing free, clean, and safe drinking water to all Tabak members, particularly in remote areas like Camp Cesar L. Sang-an. He expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the successful rehabilitation of the station and highlighted its significance in promoting sustainable development and community service.

“The decision to rehabilitate our water refilling station was driven not just by logistical needs but by a deep-seated commitment to the well-being of our soldiers,” Maj. Gen. Viray III stated. “This belief aligns with the core principles upheld by our Commanding General of the Philippine Army.”

He further added, “Our soldiers, whether engaged in training, operations, or administrative duties, deserve to have their basic needs reliably met. The Tabak Water Refilling Station symbolizes our organizational resilience and our dedication to excellence in every aspect of service.”

Three Last Armed Remnants of Communist Terrorist Cell Surrender to Army Troops in Zamboanga del Sur

CAMP SANG-AN, Zamboanga del Sur — On July 19, three final armed remnants of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) Regional Cell made a significant move towards peace and reconciliation by voluntarily surrendering their fi****ms to the Army’s 102nd Infantry (Igsoon) Brigade at Purok 2, Brgy Saad, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur.

The individuals, identified as , a former squad leader; /Joven, a former commanding officer; and /Jeepey, a former member of the defunct Guerilla Front BBC, took the courageous step toward a new life. They surrendered with two M16 rifles, one M1911 Cal. 45, three bandoliers, three magazines, sixty-one 5.56mm rounds, seven .45 caliber rounds, and one backpack.

Brig. Gen. Elmer B. Suderio, Commander of the 102nd (Igsoon) Brigade, remarked, “The decision of , /Joven, and /Jeepey to surrender with their fi****ms is commendable and marks a pivotal moment in the journey towards peace in the Zamboanga Peninsula. We will ensure their safety during the reintegration process and support their return to society.”

Maj. Gen. Gabriel C. Viray III, Commander of the 1st Infantry Division, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the former CTG members for their bravery in surrendering and choosing to continue their lives as normal citizens. “The value of these three individuals as surrenderers cannot be overstated. According to the doctrine of the CPP-NPA, recovery is always a goal after setbacks. However, with these surrenders, the chances of recovery in this region are significantly diminished. This surrender will lead to the eventual dismantling of the CTG Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC) and signify the total defeat of the Communist Terrorist Group in the Zamboanga Peninsula.”

The surrenderers were presented to Hon. Victor J. Yu, Governor of Zamboanga del Sur, and Maj. Gen. Gabriel C. Viray III, Commander of the 1st Infantry TABAK Division. Governor Yu, who also chairs the Provincial Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (PTF ELCAC), expressed his dedication and commitment to supporting the development of each surrenderee. He reinforced the spirit of collaboration and resilience among the people of Zamboanga del Sur and highlighted the province’s cooperation with the Philippine Army.

This event underscores the government’s commitment to fostering reconciliation and promoting peacebuilding. By enabling former rebels to reintegrate into society, it aims to boost community development and stability.

The surrenderers were also provided with the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial financial assistance package, further aiding their transition to peaceful and productive lives.

DECADES OLD RIDO FINALLY RESOLVED

Another momentous achievement in the pursuit of peace was achieved today (August 14, 2023) after an almost decades-old Rido in the 2nd District of Lanao del Sur was finally settled at the Lanao del Sur Capitol Complex through the intervention of the Provincial Local Government Unit under Hon Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr, the Provincial governor, and the Brigade Commander of the 103rd (Haribon) Brigade, BGen Yegor Rey P Barroquillo Jr.

The long-standing Rido between the Alawi-Potawan families of the Municipality of Madalum and the Polao-Ampuan families of the Municipality of Bacolod Kalawi slowly escalated through the years left unresolved by the Local Government Units (LGUs) due to the unwillingness and the strong blood relationships of involved parties. The conflict has since affected five (5) families and five (5) municipalities (Madalum, Bacolod Kalawi, Madamba, Ganassi and Pagayawan) as well as the economy and security environment of the involved and nearby LGUs.

It was through the continuing effort of the 103rd Infantry Brigade to resolve Rido settlements in the province that the peaceful resolution of this conflict was finally realized. With the perseverance of Col Billy O Dela Rosa, the Deputy Commander of the 103rd Inf Bde, who orchestrated and gained the support of the Mayors of the five municipalities to unify their efforts, the end-goal of softening their hearts, opening their minds and attain their willingness to forgive was achieved.

Governor Adiong expressed his gratitude for the untiring and selfless effort of the 103rd Infantry Brigade to pursue lasting peace in the province and encouraged the involved parties to be steadfast with their commitment to the settlement agreement. On his part, BGen Barroquillo Jr welcomed the peaceful resolution to the Rido conflict of the five municipalities and guaranteed to continue pursuing peaceful resolutions to clan feuds as these may benefit more than the families themselves but also the local government unit and the effort against insurgency and terrorism.
