HIYAS 2023 Poster Submission
Participant: Anonymous
Explanation: Although with a less serious feel, my poster tries to convey the unique intimacy and sweetness from receiving affection or verbal affirmation, specifically, in Tagalog.
HIYAS 2023 Poster Submission
Participant: Ten Escara (AB-IMC)
Explanation: Our mother tongue allows us to connect with others better–some may find it more convenient to talk to someone else in a language they both are used to. More often than not, this has brought people closer together because of language alone. (ex. Cebuano has a closer bond with each other through the language they share (Cebuano). This bond is illustrated with two atoms in the poster

HIYAS 2023 Poster Submission
Participant: Gionn Datu (46YP- MA IMC)
Explanation: For my poster, I took on a different approach where I reimagined the Filipino language as a human being. Given this, I wanted to give this "person" a bouquet of forget-me-nots which symbolizes love, respect, and remembrance. So, I wanted my poster to show my deep appreciation and fondness for the Filipino language. In fact, I would consider it a heartfelt tribute to the language that unites us as Filipinos as it plays a crucial part in how our identity is formed.
“Wika Natin ‘to" is a statement of pride and ownership that heavily signifies our collective responsibility as Filipinos to preserve and celebrate the language. The Filipino language is more than just a tool we use to communicate with one another; it is our heritage that connects us to our past (our history) and shapes our present--and also our future.
With my poster, I want to encourage my fellow Filipinos to embrace our language, use it with pride, and recognize its beauty and richness.
HIYAS 2023 Poster Submission:
Participant: Iris Abcede
Explanation: A message of love and pride for all languages and cultures could be written in several different languages, including Filipino, English, and other languages commonly spoken in the Philippines.
The poster could also emphasize the importance of respecting other cultures and languages, and the value of learning about them. A slogan such as "Let's celebrate diversity and embrace differences" could be included, along with images of people of different ethnicities and cultures coming together.
Overall, the poster would be a celebration of the beauty and importance of all languages and cultures, with a special emphasis on the Filipino language and culture. It would encourage people to learn about and appreciate other languages and cultures, and to promote respect and understanding among all people, regardless of where they come from.
“While a people preserves its language, it preserves the marks of its liberty.”
Our last post mentioned how love for our own language leads to progress. In this last part of this series, we want to end on a high note by showing how our own language can be used as a tool for one of the most potent forms of progress, social and political change.
In fact, it has been done many times in the past, from the Philippine Revolution to the People Power Revolution, many powerful ideas have been shared in the perpetual fight for freedom and democracy. As a people, we have used our language to express our deepest aspirations for a just and equitable society. Our own history is a testament to the power of language as a tool for resistance and change so when we use our mother tongue to communicate, we tap into a wellspring of cultural and historical knowledge that can inspire us to change Filipino society for the better.
In this regard, the Filipino language is immensely powerful as it is filled with the very words used to vanquish those who have oppressed us in the past. Our history is one filled with many sufferings, and through time, we have gotten better at verbalizing and characterizing this struggle through language. Indeed, our Filipino language is a symbol of our resilience as a people, and this should never be forgotten as the fight for a better Filipino society is never over.
Together, let us fully embrace the Filipino language with love and pride as we continue to nurture and develop it for the future generations, ensuring that it remains a source of inspiration, unity, and progress for our nation!
In our last post, we explored the importance of the Filipino language as a mode of communication. This time, we’ll take a closer look at how this was able to build the very nations we live in today by seeing how language reflects the nation's history and cultural diversity.
The words and expressions we use today are filled with rich stories derived from the experiences of our fellow countrymen. By speaking the Filipino language, we are essentially contributing to the wealth of culture and history that the Filipino language possesses. It showcases the century's worth of cumulative progress that every Filipino has and will ever contribute to our increasingly diverse culture. The Filipino language is alive, and so long as we continue to use it, it will continue to live and grow, consequently enriching our society.
Why is love for one’s own language so important in building nationalism you may ask? Well join us in the first part of this short 3-part series where we explore the power of embracing the Filipino language to its fullest potential!
The first and most obvious point is that our mother language serves as a vital medium for communication. It is how we connect with one another in the most meaningful way possible as it allows us to share ideas that truly speak to us. It is the foundation in which our society and each of its beautiful regions are built upon, and it is the only way where we could truly and fully express ourselves as citizens to our beloved country!
