Action on Smoking & Health Philippines Inc., or ASH Philippines, is an NGO, advocating for the prevention of to***co and other lifestyle related diseases.
MYTH BUSTED! Dr. Maricar Limpin, Executive Director of Action on Smoking & Health Philippines, sheds light on the dangers of va**ng in her interview with UNTV News and Rescue.
According to Dr. Limpin, while some believe va**ng is a "lesser evil" compared to traditional ci******es, both are EQUALLY HARMFUL and can pose various diseases and illnesses if continued to be used. Va**ng, like smoking, can cause serious health issues, including an increased risk of lung disease and even potentially cause cancer. Furthermore, long-term use of e-ci******es, or va**ng products, can significantly impair the function of the body's blood vessels, increasing the risk for cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Limpin reiterates that the best alternative to smoking is to quit cold-turkey!
ASH Philippines, together with the Philippine College of Chest Physicians and Philippine Medical Association are actively campaigning to amend the v**e law to reduce va**ng rates and protect public health.

Action for Smoking and Health executive Director Dr. Maricar Limpin, urged the Philippine government to reassess its strategy for international conferences, emphasizing the need for future delegations to prioritize public health over commercial interests and align their actions with the commitments made under the WHO-FCTC.
Dr. Limpin also called out the Philippine delegations actions, pointing out that their proposals reflect the stance of countries influenced by the to***co industry.
Health advocates, together with Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Philippines Executive Director Dr. Maricar Limpin, echoed the proposal to let the Department of Health (DOH) lead the future COP during her privilege speech at the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee's investigation into the 'Dirty Ashtray' award.
Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday slammed the Philippine delegation to COP10's push for a 'balanced approach'. According to Cayetano, Filipino to***co farmers receive only a small portion compared to the substantial profits of the to***co industry.
Cayetano arrived at this calculation after he asked National To***co Administration (NTA) Chief Belinda Sanchez for data such as how much the farmers and the to***co industry are earning annually during the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee's probe on the 'Dirty Ashtray' award.
Sen. Pia Cayetano fumed over 5th Dirty Ashtray Award conferred to the Philippine delegation during the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the WHO FCTC.
In her opening remarks, Cayetano said the Dirty Ashtray Award was accorded to a countryโs delegation that blocks global to***co control efforts. This is after the Philippine delegation caused delays in discussions during the health convention.

Senator Pia Cayetano expressed obvious dismay and disappointment during the Senate Blue Ribbon public hearing yesterday, where she called out the controversial members of the Philippine delegation at the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on To***co Control (FCTC). This follows the Philippines receiving its 5th Dirty Ashtray award, which is typically given to a country's delegation that obstructs global to***co control efforts, when the Philippine delegation proposed a compromise option that muddled discussions and caused delays, leading to the deferral of important agenda items to COP11.
"Every delay is a win for the to***co companies. Every delay is on the hands of our government officials who allowed it, who held hands with these people and allowed it and are probably cheering na na-accomplish nila yan,โ said Senator Pia in her earlier privilege speech.
Senator Pia also called out the delegationโs blatant disregard for public health and asserted her commitment to hold those responsible accountable for receiving the notorious award. "Sa ika-limang pagkakataon, nagawaran ng Global Alliance for To***co Control ang Pilipinas ng Dirty Ashtray award. Bakit po ito nangyari at bakit hinayaan ng ating mga health officials na mangyari ito? We need to get to the bottom of this because we do not want to harm the country's reputation with regards to strengthening health regulations, including to***co control. We want to hear from the officials of the DOH and the other members of the PH delegation on what transpired and to make the responsible persons accountable for this incident," said Pia.
Meanwhile, Senator Alan Cayetano criticized the balanced approach of the delegation and its decision to pander to the to***co industryโs commercial interest. "We cannot present ourselves as anti-to***co kung pro-to***co tayo. So, which goes to my second point na walang such thing as balance,โ he stated.

Health advocates, together with Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Philippines Executive Director Dr. Maricar Limpin, echoed the sentiments to let the Department of Health (DOH) lead the future COP, emphasizing that "the COP10 is a health convention, so perhaps let the actual health experts lead and take the forefront to ensure that decisions are rooted in scientific expertise. The COP10 is not an avenue to negotiate health over the vested interests of the to***co industry; the delegationโs duty is supposed to safeguard public health with diligence and competence.โ
Dr. Limpin calls on the government to rectify the Dirty Ashtray award by proposing the adoption of transparent policies, including the disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest within the delegation. Dr. Limpin also insists on a paradigm shift towards a more inclusive decision-making process, which involves actively seeking public input by actively engaging experts and civil society for future COP events.
Despite once again receiving the notorious Dirty Ashtray award, health advocates vow to stand firm alongside Senators Pia and Alan Cayetano in defending public health against the vested interests of the to***co industry.
"As health advocates, we are resolute in our commitment to stand firm and unwavering against the influence of the to***co industry. The Dirty Ashtray award serves as a stark reminder that our fight for public health is far from over. We will continue to work hand in hand with Senators Pia and Alan Cayetano, leveraging our collective strength to ensure that the health and welfare of our citizens take precedence over any commercial interests,โ said Dr. Limpin.
โTogether, we will persist in striving for a future where the Philippines is not only free from the stain of the Dirty Ashtray award but also emerges as a beacon of exemplary to***co control and public health practices on the global stage," she added.
MANILA, Philippines โ The anti-smoking advocacy group Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Philippines asked the national government on Tuesday to prioritize the health of Filipinos over the trade of to***co products, including electronic alternatives.
According to the groupโs executive director Maricar Limpin, as a signatory of the Framework Convention on To***co Control (FCTC) of the World Health Organization (WHO), the country should fulfill its commitments to the treaty.
