Introducing our freshest, coolest speakers: 🎥

Dr. Noel P. de Guzman is an associate professor and acting chair of the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Economics. He has a PhD from Fordham University and focuses mainly on economic theory. 📈

Atty. Jan Fredrick P. Cruz, JD, is a lawyer, educator, and policy analyst 🖊️. He is the head of the economics program at Enderun Colleges. Additionally, he teaches law, policy, and economics classes in the Ateneo School of Government, the Department of Economics, and the European Studies Program. Cruz concurrently serves as a policy consultant to the Office of the Executive Director of the Dangerous Drugs Board from February 2022 to the present. 🤓

AEA’s current President, Zylver Wayne L. Bautista, and Secretary-General, Ella Louise J. Damasco, will also hold an introduction talk about the organization during the event. ✨

This year, the Ateneo Economics Association (AEA) was granted the role of “Sending Organization” by the International Economics Olympiad (IEO) Executive Board, securing the privilege of sending the first team to represent the Philippines in the IEO 2024.

AEA met the standards of the IEO after organizing the Basic Economics Conference Series (BEConS) and Development Economics Conference of the Ateneo (DECA) last March and April 2024, respectively. The latter was established as the National Competition to certify the eligibility of contestants from the Philippine Team in 2024.

The Philippine Team was represented by DECA 2024 winners Reeja Subramanian, Rayjohn Raphael Oflaria, and Clark Kenji Mariano, from the German European School Manila and Claret School of Quezon City.

The IEO is an annual competition that seeks to foster creative problem-solving skills among high school students interested in Economics, Business, and Finance. This year’s contest was hosted in Hong Kong last July 23 to July 30, 2024, and consisted of an Economics and Financial Literacy Examination, as well as a Business Case Competition focused on the host country’s housing crisis.

The heat index 🌡️ has reached alarming levels ⚠️, causing disruptions in day-to-day lives, schools, and even economic events. Undoubtedly, global pollution and greenhouse gas emissions 💨 have contributed to the increasing temperature in the country 📈.

Interestingly, a specific theoretical curve studies the correlation of environmental degradation and restoration, and growth of economy.

For this month’s R&D publication, we investigated the Philippines within the context of the Environmental Kuznets Curve 📉 to analyze the economic and environmental situation of the country.
