Starting from morse code that can be transmited to a kilometer away to a way of communication that can be used to gather information or just bring music to the people. Especially in journalism where it is an important part in reporting the everyday events in our community, city or even our country. Not only that but radio broadcasting is a part of the yearly press conferences. Ever since the early 1990s, people all around the world have been celebrating National Radio Day. National Radio Day offers communities and individuals worldwide a chance to recognize and honour the role that radio plays in the modern world. While some believe that radio has passed its prime, it still acts as a strong force, particularly in local communities.

Is it really 'MATATAG'?
By Kchylle Edhz Callo
The pilot launch of DepEdโs MATATAG Curriculum is one of the talks of the town this school year (2024-2025). As the Philippines ranked second to the lowest when it comes to creative thinking, math, and science, based on a released report of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), "the curriculum was created to improve the quality of basic education in the Philippines," according to vice president and former education secretary Sara Duterte. Furthermore, it is designed to ensure that Filipino students will get the basic but qualified education that they must have.
One of the curriculum's focuses is to raise students' reading proficiency, so DepEd added supplementary classes such as the National Math Program (NMP) and Catch Up Fridays to create Filipino learners who are proficient and critical problem solvers. This resulted in adding the NMP to the daily schedule of students while cutting the time per subject from 1 hour to 45 minutes.
Math teachers at Quirino High School understand the intention of adding NMP. However, the instruction could be challenging since there is one main math subject students take first. And the topics taught in NMP are not the same or related to the lessons discussed there.
The pilot launch of the MATATAG curriculum has caused difficulties for students and teachers to adjust from the original 1 hour per subject that we were used to. Although there is only at least a 15-minute difference from the original time duration per subject each week, limiting a class to 45 minutes a day shortens learning time realisticallyโteachers are consuming the time for building, hopping, catching their breaths, and setting up equipment.
Compared to the previous schedule, which is seen to be time-engaging for students, having more time to comprehend each lesson, and giving teachers an amount of time to discuss, the brand-new schedule is tiringโexhausting, to be exact, to students and teachers.
In comparison to the past schedule at QHS, students and teachers this school year need to stay at school to 2:30 pm on Mondays to Thursdays and 2:45 pm on Fridays, whereas last year, we only had to stay to 1:30 pm and have enough time to rest and finish our to-do list.
Personally, as a student, I cannot maximize the time given per subject, and to add to that, all subjects are needed to be taught in a day. On the other hand, my observation of my teachers is that they lack time to discuss, making it hard for them as they are accustomed to teaching in an hour.
In addition to the changes in time schedules, there are also adjustments regarding the subjects per day; the last curriculum had only six subjects, while Matatagโs Curriculum had approximately all of the subjects listed. DepEd Order No. 010, s. 2024 states in the Junior High School Curriculum that it has eight learning areas: Filipino, English, Mathematics, Science, Araling Panlipunan, Music & Arts, and Physical Education & Health (MAPEH), Values Education, and Technology & Livelihood Education (TLE).
The pilot launch of the Matatag curriculum should be implemented in small and limited schools in order to ensure quality and effectiveness. But instead, they imposed the curriculum at schools nationwide, making it a total shock to students.
Isn't the education sector prioritizing the quality of teaching-learning experiences? Why does it seem to be doing the opposite of its goal?

Caloy Yulo's double gold cemented in Philippine history
by John Rhenz Santiago
As the Philippine anthem echoed in the Bercy Arena in Paris on a Sunday night, Carlos (Caloy) Yulo couldn't help but be grateful for all the hardships that lead him to bagging the first ever double gold medals the Philippines has clinched in the 2024 Paris Olympics gymnastics.
Yuloโs double gold in gymnastics was a hard fought victory as all the matches was neck and neck
His first gold that he triumphed was after scoring a perfect 15.000 in floor exercise slightly edging out Israel's Artem Dolgopyat (14.966) and Great Britain's Jake Jarman (14.933) in the highest difficulty on August 4, 2024 in Bercy Arena, France.
A day after Yuloโs monumental victory, he soared his way into another gold medal after getting an average score of 15.116 right behind Armanias Artur Davtyan who bagged silver and Great Britain's Harry Hepworth who nabbed bronze.
This Victory was not only for Yuloโs country but also a form of redemption for him as he famously struggled in his debut in Tokyo 2020 Olympics where he failed to qualify for the finals of floor exercise and salvaged fourth place in vault.
But this only lit a fire inside Yuloโs heart as he returned three years later to dominate the Paris Olympics and emerge as the gold medalist for two games in the olympics.
All this effort exerted by Yulo resulted in him not only by rewriting Philippine sports history but also receiving incentives like a three million peso reward, fully furnished condominiums in Bonifacio Global City and Mckinley Hill totalling to 24 million and 32 million respectively.
This is the Philippinesโ second and third olympic gold medal after Hidilyn Diazโ weightlifting gold in the Tokyo games.
But the country's olympic journey does not end with Yuloโs reign as the Philippines still has other chances to clinch gold with boxers Nesthy Petacio, Aira Villegas and number two pole vaulter in the world EJ Obiena.

Tatlong 'Ka': Chairman Perjes' Lesson for Orientation
By: John Rhenz T. Santiago
An orientation was held to discuss the rules and regulations of the school and their building to Grade 10 students at Quirino High School (QHS) dome on August 2, 2024.
Head teacher III and Grade 10 Level Chairman Lory Perjes took up front and center to announce the rules for Grade 10's building such as proper decorum, as well as rules for the students themselves like haircuts and accessories.
Not only that but Ma'am Perjes also gave advice on how students should act based on the Tatlong 'Ka' a self imposed rule dubbed by Ma'am Perjes herself to help students act accordingly throughout their journey in Grade 10.
These Tatlong 'Ka' are "kaalaman, kasanayan and karakter" or knowledge, skills and character in English.
Ma'am Perjes stated that the Tatlong 'Ka' will help guide the grade 10 students to be the best form of themselves as well as act accordingly throughout their final year as junior high schoolers.
โGoal namin last year ay mapa-angat kayo sa Grade 10. This year ang goal namin ay lahat kayo mag moving up.โ Ma'am Perjes strongly stated as a final word to the students before handing the orientation to the other teachers.
This also served as a way for the students to meet QHS' new principal, Ma'am Carolyn Simon who quickly connected with the students in her introduction.
They also introduced the school staff to the students at the orientation from head teachers, Grade 10 teachers, non-advisory teachers to utility workers, guards and other personnel.
ESP and guidance teacher Ma'am Edilyn Talisay also spoke about the different types of bullying, the punishments against them and what to do if you are the victim.
The Grade 10 student's orientation went on from 7:00-8:45.
A video of American therapist Sean Stephensons ted talk about his situation and why people shouldn't pity but love themselves instead, was also played at the orientation as a form of showing sympathy as well as motivation to the students who made it all that way to the final stretch of their of junior high school.

The day of Independence, marked on June 12, 1898, was a momentous occasion for Filipinos. It was a day of liberation from Spanish rule after almost 333 years of suffering. Remembering this day has been our tradition, a time to fully embrace the true spirit of our nation, once conquered by greed and pride. However, true independence is not simply achieved by raising a flag. The same year we declared independence, we faced challenges from American forces, underscoring the complexity of our journey towards freedom, independence, and unity.
For a country to be truly independent, it must be governed by its own citizens in both politics and the economy, free from foreign control. Independence also means having the courage to stand against foreign interference that harms our people. Today, independence should be seen as more than just freedom; it's the ability to stand without judgement or restrictions imposed by those driven by greed and power. We celebrate independence to acknowledge the potential for achieving greater things beyond mere free will.
Filipinos are renowned for our "bayanihan," our spirit of unity and cooperation. We come together to support each other's needs, regardless of our differences. We act independently to aid those who are still dependent, driven by a passion for unity that expects nothing in return. Independence is expressed through acts of nationalism and patriotism, not through selfish pursuits.
However, we seem to have forgotten the true essence of independence. We've become too fragile, too dependent, blinded by corrupt leaders who manipulate us with false promises and incomplete reforms. We trust blindly, unable to stand with strength or speak out with courage to reclaim our rightful independence.
With all this said, we must remember that independence is an achievement bestowed upon all citizens who are born to stand and speak for the good of the nation. It's a gift that empowers the strong to help the weak become independent as well. We are all endowed with independence so that none of us become strangers to our own kind, fostering the spirit of "bayanihan" for future generations.
This article is intentionally published after Independence Day to provoke the question, "What should we be tomorrow?" Should we merely celebrate independence or live it every day? If independence is truly about serving the common good, then these ideals will no longer be foreign to us.

Time check! it's June and you know what that means right? It's Pride Month! which celebrates, acknowledges and supports the le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender and q***r, commonly known as the LGBTQ community during the month of June. But is that all the things we celebrate for the month of June? If we look past the internationally celebrated Pride Month, June is also home to another not so well known celebration named โMen's Mental Health Monthโ Is it important to recognize June? and does it deserve to be more relevant than Pride Month?
The importance of acknowledging mens mental health the dangers it possess, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) on its su***de report during 2023 there is 700,000 su***de every year and even more su***de attempts with nearly 70 percent of it being male. In a survey done by Priory.com, they found out that 40% of men have never spoken to anyone about their mental health despite three quarters of men suffering from depression, anxiety or stress. In another survey they did about why men don't speak up their reasons were:
* "i've learnt to deal with it" (40%)
* "I don't wish to be a burden to anyone" (36%)
* "i'm too embarrassed" (29%)
* "theres alot of negative stigma around this type of thing (20%)
Men's Mental Health Month or Men's Mental Health Awareness Month in other countries, provides awareness to the societal stigma and struggles that men face. This comes in the form of shedding light, educating people on the mental stability that men are facing as well as aiding men that are experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and su***de. In other words, Men's Mental Health Month opens a door of opportunities for men to seek help and ultimately improve the quality of life for men and for their community.
Paddy Pimblett, a professional mixed martial artist states why it is important to recognize Men's Mental Health Month. โThere's a stigma in this world that men can't talk. If you're a man, and you've got weight on your shoulders, and you think the only way you can solve it is by killing yourself, please speak to someone. Speak to anyone. . . Let's get rid of this stigma and men start talking.โ Pimblett shouts in the stadium after achieving victory in the UFC london on July 23, 2022 but also to one of his male friends who committed su***de due to mental health issues.
It was in June of 1994 where Men's Mental Health Month was recognized nationally by Kansas, USA Senator Bob Dole passed a bill to the congress to bring awareness to the mental being of men. But it's worth noting that other countries acknowledge Menโs Health Month in a different way. An example of this is โMovemberโ which was founded in November 2003 by Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, two friends from australia who brought back the fashion of mustaches to serve as a movement for raising awareness for men's mental health and prostate cancer, a disease suffered by males.
The symbol that represents the awareness itself is embodied by a green ribbon. Though as mentioned before, in Movember, the icon changes from a green ribbon to a mustache.
While Men's Mental Health Month is mainly acknowledged in June, we should consider men's mental health all year round. June is home to both Men's Mental Health Month and Pride Month so we ought to recognize both of them for the wellbeing of our communities. With that said, Happy Pride Month and Men's Mental Health Month!

As the quote suggests, these students have worked hard not only in the aspect of journalism but also managed to juggle it along with their academics allowing them to graduate and being a part of the honors. Junior high school is only a start for them to encounter more opportunities and to strive harder in their academics, yet they did so with flying colors.
From holding auditions for the creation of The Leadon's 2023-2024 staff members until participating in The Leadon's Newspaper Entry for RSPC 2024, these students stuck with each other despite the challenges that came with it. They held their truth as journalists and never let these difficulties get in the way. In between these challenges, it formed stronger relationships and bonds with one another.
Let us wave goodbye to them as they embark on a new chapter of their lives. Wish them luck for their future endeavors and success!

๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ก ๐๐ก๐ก๐ข๐ฉ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ก, ๐ช๐๐๐ก?
Last place since 2018 and barely moved to the top countries that passed the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). That is the Philippines, ranked fifth(77th) to the last out of 81 countries that participated in the PISA 2022. This proves that not only are we failing to address education but also falling behind in this generation's standards in education.
PISA mainly concentrates on performance in reading, mathematics, and science in which we fall significantly short of the global average. According to OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), The Philippines have scored an average of 365 points in mathematics, 347 points in reading, and 373 points in science with a total average of 353 points. On the other hand, we can notice a large gap from Singapore's(Top 1) results averaging from 575 points in mathematics, 513 points in reading, and 561 points in science with a total of 560 in total average. Out of 81 countries, we are truly far from being close to Singapore.
Our PISA results mainly reflect the education poverty in which the Philippines have been facing for the last couple of years. Until now, a concrete solution to this issue can't still be addressed by the government and still acts as a future major issue for the next couple of years. According to the World Bank in 2022, 9 in 10 Filipinos in late primary age cannot read well and what more if it were at the secondary levelโ15-year-olds who cannot read well?
Currently, the Department of Education did somehow address this issue among students whose reading comprehension does not level their age. This includes implementing a National Reading Program (NRP) like " Drop Everything And Read '' in which every school should participate in. However, is this enough to at least spark interest among Filipino students to read? Moreover, are all teachers fully ready and equipped to facilitate reading activities effectively?
Addressing this education madness is a must. We are clearly falling behind those countries who have proven that have excelled through the following years of their education. Take Singapore as an example as one of the top countries for their education systems. According to Brookings, Singapore has evolved from a focus of fulfilling economic needs and supporting student's academic development to an increasing focus on holistic student development, including character formation, societal participation, and self-actualization.
What we need is bold leadership and concrete solutions from the government that promotes specific policy changes such as increased funding, curriculum reform, teacher training, and etc. In addition, it is also a must to emphasize transparency, accountability, and a long-term vision for the future of our education system. Every student has the right for accessibility and fulfilment for education.
Our PISA results speak for itself. We are but one nation that struggles to provide high-quality, creative means of staying up to date with education. However, countries with superior educational capacities have not yet fully overtaken us. It is time to take this as a signalโto begin the next phase of our educational journey for every student and for their future.

To be called a โstudent leaderโ is extravagant, but these two words come with heavy responsibilities. Being a student leader requires being a role model among fellow students, good leadership skills, and accountability. A leaderโs qualities are exhibited and reflected in the way they act. One must first experience being a classroom officer to determine if you have what it takes to lead the whole school and scrutinize it in your own classroom. Putting the welfare of your fellow students first before anything else.
The sweet satisfaction of being a student council leader does not stop with acquiring the title. It comes with sleepless nights juggling to maintain the image of an academic achiever, providing a vision and trust among your peers, co-leaders, students, and teachers. A collaborative effort among fellow leaders to enhance and create the school premises orderly, and amplify the voices of Quirinians.
Last year I witnessed the campaign, the voting, and the winning of candidates. Fast forward to the middle of the school year, I passed by the SSLG room with less than half of the officers preparing for the valentineโs day event. It turns out that only the same officers work on all the events, programs, and projects while the others sit pretty with their title of โSSLG officerโ.
Think about it. If we students vote for a โstudent leaderโ incapable of fulfilling their duties, disappearing like a bubble once the campaign ends. Who would suffer? The other SSLG leaders will bear the burden throughout the year. What would be the future if we vote for leaders who will vanish after attaining the likes, fame, and title of being a โstudent leaderโ when they donโt have the commitment to serve and put the other students welfare before their own?
Students should reflect on what it means to be called a โstudent leaderโ. Chasing fame through power is a cancer; a cancer eating away at our school's peace and order. Jose Rizal once said that the youth are the hope of our future, not arrogant, deceitful, greedy, impulsive scum of the earth with nothing but just their narrow-minded, malicious interests in mind. Next time any of us cast our votes, cast our ballots, think first, if the name you vote for is the name of someone who could be a hope for the future, or a reckless fool.

QHS CHANGES DRESS CODE AMIDST SOARING HEAT
By: Ethan Hipe
In response to the high temperatures detected by the Quezon City Government (QCG), Quirino High School (QHS) had announced a temporary revision of it's
dress code to ensure the safety and comfortness of it's students, teachers, and other staff last Thursday.
"Teachers can wear polo or T-shirts that they are comfortable and cool with. However, prohibited attires mentioned in the Revised Dress Code Prescribed for All Government Officials and Employees in the Workplace must be observed at all times," a statement from the official QHS Supreme Secondary
Learner Government (SSLG) FB account's recent post.
Furthermore, keeping in mind the fact that the school is an institution for learning, students will be allowed to wear attire that can keep them cool,
such as school uniform, plain t-shirt, polo shirt, or the Pranz Pumaren shirt are allowed.
"We are also reminding students to please be mindful of what you are going to wear when going to school. This should reflect respect for the school for
it is an institution of learning," as stated in SSLG's FB post.
QCG detects the high levels of temperature by using the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office's (QCDRRMO) IRISE-UP system, which has
detected up to 40 degrees and above on the heat index, which has caused QCG to advise residents to take extreme care to avoid various health complications
caused by the heat.
"Ang Heat Index ay temperaturang nararamdaman ng ating katawan. kailangan ng EXTREME CAUTION o ibayong pag-iingat dahil ito ay maaaring
magdulot ng heat cramps, heat exhaustion, at heat stroke," stated QCG on their official FB account.
The QCG would use the IRISE-UP to decide whether schools around QC would resume classes as normal, or convert into synchronous/asynchronous
classes when the temperature hits 40 degrees or higher, which would then be announced on their FB account at around 5:20 P.M
"Kapag ang heat index ay umabot ng 40ยฐC, otomatikong ipapatupad ang alternative delivery modes of learning (synchronous / asynchronous) sa mga
pampublikong paaralan," announced QCG on a recent post.
To avoid heat exhaustion and various other health complications related to the hot weather felt recently, remember to always drink plenty of water,
wear clothing that is comfortable for you and bring umbrellas when going outside, and seek immediate medical attention once symptoms appear or are felt.
