The youth are the future, they can even be the solution to this pandemic crisis. Hunahunaa wala sa age group nila ang nagrabehan sa sakit, pero pwede sila ang mag dala. Busa ato sila protektahan ug igiyya ug sakto.

Reality on Our Healthcare System Today, 3 Processes you Must Know to be Admitted in the Hospital

Reality of Our Healthcare System Today, 3 Processes you Must Know to be Admitted in the Hospital

More and more people are becoming vigilant in their health. A simple headache or few hours of fever warrant them to sought consult to their doctors and others even wanted to be admitted to the hospital. This is because of health insurance such as Philhealth, HMO, and others. Traditional healing like "hilot" are a thing in the past. But a lot of changes happened when the COVID19 infected many of us. This disease does not choose their victim, and it doesn't even give you time and opportunity to say goodbye to your loved ones. Heck, you don't even have the time to reflect on yourself and accept your fate. There's no cure, no vaccine yet. People are afraid. Hospitals and clinics develop strict protocols.

Patients now tend to self medicate, trying to recall the medication they have received before. Problem is pharmacies won't give any drugs without prescription, especially antibiotics. A simple cough now becomes a Moderate Risk Pneumonia, which requires admission.

Here are some processes on some private hospitals before you are admitted. Other hospitals might have different protocols but the guidelines are somewhat the same:

1️⃣Patients will be screened at the triage area for Covid19 evaluation. If the patient is classified as Covid19 suspect, he/she will be immediately referred to a COVID19 Center. Usually patients presenting Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI) in areas were there is local transmission of Covid19 are considered suspect.

2️⃣ If the patient does not qualify as Covid19 suspect on the initial screening, the triage staff will be asking for an infectious disease clearance. If he/she does not have one, he/she will be placed in the holding area, the tent outside the hospital. Series of laboratory tests will be done to determine the likelihood of having the Covid19 disease.

3️⃣ A designated Infectious Disease Doctor will further evaluate and will provide clearance if the patient is not categorized as COVID19 suspect then the patient now can enter the Emergency Room. The ER staff will be asking for a Doctor's Order from his/her attending physician. If he/she does not have one, the resident physician will make an order after taking history and PE.

This process could take a lot longer, even for several hours before the patient is transferred to the ward/room.

A simple illness or a controllable disease becomes worst and uncontrolled that warrants admission. Most private hospitals are full, government hospitals are beyond capacity- all because of covid19 pandemic. There is fear on both the patients and health care provider. Strict protocols on medical check-ups were implemented. Pre-appointment requirements were asked from patients.

Doctors are finding innovations to reach out with their patients. They address their medical problem and at the same time keeping them safe at the comfort of their home. Telemedicine/ telehealth is now advocated. Patients can now reach their doctors online through the web or social media. Electronic prescriptions are now accepted by the pharmacies according to law. For doctors, physical examination is still irreplaceable but having an initial online consultation will limit the time of check up in the clinic which means lesser exposure time. Patient or doctor can book an appointment for physical examination thus, no more waiting time.

We must be proactive in this time of crisis. We must adapt to change. ,

Morning Sickness?

One of the most common complaints of pregnant women is the morning sickness. Well for sure it is the commonly used symptom of pregnancy in movies and teleseryes. But what causes vomiting among preggies?... It appears to be related to high or rapidly rising female hormone called chorionic gonadotropin and estrogens. When this became severe, it can produce weight loss, dehydration, starvation, acid-base and electrolyte imbalance.
If it became prolonged, frequent and severe it may lead to kidney failure due to dehydration, tear or rupture of esophagus, Vitamin B deficiency that leads to blindness, convulsions and coma or Vitamin K deficiency that leads to bleeding.
Sounds scary right?
Persistent vomiting usually warrants admission under the care of your OB GYN specialist to avoid this complication. Your first line of defense whenever you have this symptoms is the Vitamin B complex. For heartburn, raising the head of the bed and treatment with oral antacids as recommended by your OB usually relieves symptoms. It is better to consult your doctor for some anti-emetics or medication for your vomiting.

What's causing my back ache?

Most moms-to-be complains of back-ache. These are actually common among pregnant women. So why does it hurts now? As your uterus expands to 1000x its normal size and gain weight from your baby, it shifts your center of gravity. As your tummy grows forward, your pelvis tips backward- and you intend to overarch your lower back to balance, which puts stress on the spine. Another cause is the hormone relaxin. Its a pregnancy hormone that relaxes the joints in the pelvis and loosen up the spine to make room for the developing baby. So the back muscle are strain as they support your back. Here are some tips to reduce back aches

have a shoes with good arch support, heels or wedge with little elevation, avoid high heels;

Sleep on your left side with pillow between your legs and extra pillow to support your back;

Strengthen your lower body by doing squats. Have a trained instructor to guide you with your workout;

Exercise regularly. Prenatal yoga for 30 min 3x a week keeps your back strong. Walking and swimming are also good exercise;

Adjust your posture, stand up straight chest lifted and don't stoop and bend from your knees when picking something in the ground;

Apply abdominal binder for support in your midsection and back;

Have a prenatal massage by trained therapist

I'm pregnant, Is it ok to drink coffee?

Coffee gives you a kick to jump-start your day. But, can you still drink coffee during pregnancy? Well, there's a limit. Caffeine can cross through the placenta, and so your baby share some caffeine that you drink. This can influence cell development and decrease blood flow. In effect, this can cause miscarriage. Experts had set a limit of 12oz cup of coffee. This is roughly 200 mg of caffeine a day. That's approximately 1 tall cup of caffe americano from your favorite coffee shop.
1 cup of brewed coffee = 100 mg
1 cup of instant coffee = 75 mg
1 cup of decaf = 15 mg
1 cup of tea = 50 mg
1 can cola = 40 mg
1 can energy drink = 80 mg
1 bar chocolate = 50 mg.
Some doctors are conservative and advice expectant mothers to avoid coffee. Caffeine raises your heart rate because its a stimulant. It can also cause heartburn and aggravate more morning sickness since it stimulates acidity to your stomach. This symptoms will gets worse as your pregnancy progress. So cut back on caffeine or set a limit.

Does dysmenorrhea already interferes your daily activity?

Dysmenorrhea is a cyclic pelvic pain associated with menstruation. It is often called menstrual cramps. It is cause by strong consistent contraction of the uterus. As it contracts it press the nearby blood vessel and cuts of the oxygen supplies to the muscle tissues of the uterus. So, pain results when part of the uterus has poor oxygen supply. In most cases it responds to treatment with common pain relievers like Ibuprofen, rest, avoiding foods containing caffeine and salt, avoid smoking and alcohol. Massaging the lower back and abdomen also helps. If pain is not controlled by this methods, there might be another cause. Mittelschmerz or painful ovulation is another common cause. It is often confused with appendicitis. Another common cause is endometriosis. It is the implantation of tissue lining of the uterus outside the uterus. Oral contraceptives may be helpful in this case as warranted by your obstetrician. If dysmenorrhea already bothers you, ask for your doctors advice.
