In the last five years alone, she has published more than 20 scientific papers in ISI covered journals and other international publications.
For her significant contributions in the study of the red tide phenomenon in the country, Azanza was elected Academician in the Biological Sciences Division of the Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in July 2009. In 2013, the University of the Philippines Alumni Association bestowed on her the Lifetime Distinguished Achievements Award, and in 2015, she was conferred the Pantas Award as Outstanding Researcher/Scientist by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD)-DOST. Additionally, the symposium-workshop encouraged academic institutions to collaborate with FEP in establishing a Universities SDG Action Network (USAN) within each of the three regions. Through this collaborative network, SUCs and HEIs can align their core functions(including teaching, research and development, and extension work) with the SDGs, thereby enhancing their overall societal impact.

Future Earth Philippines Program (FEPP), a national structure in the form of Government-funded project, was officially launched on November 19, 2018 at an international symposium in Manila. The inaugural event was graced by high-profile dignitaries and scientists from the Philippines and abroad and attracted more than 200 representatives of the government, civil society, academe, and non-government organizations (NGOs).
Dr. Fortunato Dela Peรฑa, the Secretary of Science and Technology at the Philippinesโ Department of Science and Technology, encouraged the need for collaboration among relevant agencies, institutions and stakeholders to ensure that various perspectives are considered and subsequently warranting engagement and participation in his keynote message.
The Future Earth Philippines Program (FEPP) is a scientific endeavor aimed at strengthening the countryโs resilience and national sustainability through the creation of Philippine Knowledge-Action Programs for Sustainability (PKAPS). It also seeks to link the country with regional and global initiatives on sustainability.
The Program is led by Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz, National Scientist of the Philippines, and some 70 scientists in the country joined forces. This is an inclusive and transdisciplinary initiative that aims to improve the countryโs overall capability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The main strategy to achieve its goal is to establish different PKAPS focusing on relevant sustainability issues of the country in collaboration with relevant government agencies and other societal stakeholders including academe, civil society and industry.
Funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Philippines, the Program will provide a concrete framework for scientists across the country to improve the national resilience and sustainability.

The 71st Episode of FEP's SDG Action Hour features ๐๐ซ. ๐๐๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ, A Filipina professor in Germany awardee of the 2024 Planet Earth Awards of the Alliance of World Scientists (AWS). Her humble beginning can be traced back in the busy city of Pasig, Metro Manila where at a young age, she had developed an acute awareness of the value of environment. This ignited a passion in her to pursue a carrer relateed to environment protection. At first, she took biology in college then proceeded in taking a masteral degree in environemental science at the University of the Philippines while working for Greenpeace Southeast Asia.
While working at UP-Dilimanโs Marine Science Institute, Matias started to seriously consider a career in the academe, thanks to Dr. Arturo Lluisma, a principal investigator who introduced her to the rigors of research.
She earned an International Climate Protection Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, then a scholarship to finish her MSc in Environmental Sciences and Policy from the Central European University in Hungary. She was awarded a PhD in Agricultural Sciences from the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn in Germany in 2017.
It was a work borne of her engagement in fieldwork with various Philippine nongovernmental organizations, including the Non-Timber Forest Products Exchange Programme (NTFP-EP Asia). She found out from the indigenous Tagbanua community that they had a problem with honey gathering in Aborlan, Palawan.
She subsequently carried out a project with the community to help restore giant honey bee habitat by planting native species.
In 2018, she, with Loreta Alsa, a Tagbanua, went to Yale University to present the project and they were awarded first place by Yaleโs International Society of Tropical Forests for the Innovation Prize.
GIVING BACK
โI always look for a way to give back,โ she said. She recounted how she would actively raise funds after extreme emergency events in the Philippines by making handmade items, especially with recycled paper.
After Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) hit the Philippines in 2013, for example, she sold products at a Christmas market in Germany to raise funds for relief aid.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she solicited donations through her Instagram account () for NTFP-EP Philippines and sent handcrafted notepads to donors.
All these served as her way to contribute to her country even if she was physically away.
โI donโt want to build a career by using people, especially since I conduct research with indigenous communities,โ she said.
For her current research project on Palawan pangolins, she is helping several Filipinos by giving them access to information, training, and opportunities that are not, sadly, available to most Filipino scientists.
She said, โWe need to advance science because, at the moment, it exists in a silo. There is limited interaction with the social sciences and the humanities. In Germany, interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged and promoted, and they are supported with research grants.โ
Matias, a tenured Filipino professor in Germany, currently serves as a member of the Selection Committee of the International Climate Protection Fellowship, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation; lead author of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Thematic Assessment of the Interlinkages among Biodiversity, Water, Food and Health (Nexus Assessment); and senior fellow of the Manila Observatory.
Something that she heard Dr. Jurgenne Honculada-Primavera, a mangrove ecosystem scientist, say has been her north star: โWe need science-based development.โ
โHow can you do proper science if your needs are not met? Science is not a priority in the Philippines. But I hope it will be,โ she said.

Every year, the world celebrates April as Earth Month in commemoration of the importance of taking good care of our environment. We are reminded that the air we breath, the water we drink and the ground we walk on to are not just bare elements of nature but the bloodline of our existence.
This year the theme of Earth Month is Planet vs Plastic. Over the past decades consumerism, pinned by poor waste management, lead to the over use of plastics. There is now an estimated 30 Mt of plastic waste in seas and oceans, and a further 109 Mt has accumulated in rivers.
The grim reality is "plastic is forever". It doesn't biodegrade. It just shatter into small pieces and becomes a destructive part of the our ecosytem affecting wildlife and human alike.
As we celebrate Earth Month, lets take a look at our individual actions and reflect on how we contribute to this global threat. We don't have to wait every April of each year to celebrate Earth Month. Instead, lets do our part to make each day EARTH DAY.
